Three years ago we hosted an exchange student from India for a year.  Our second week that he was with us we got Summer as a 9 week old GSP pup.  Our 17 year-old exchange student had never had a pet, and didn't even know how to pick up the pup that would become the love of his life.

He lived with us for a year and practically raised Summer, took her to the park, took her swimming, did her training classes totally fell in love with the dog.  His mom started telling him that he could forget about getting a dog when he got back to India because she could tell how much he enjoyed having a pet.

When his departure was approaching, all he was concerned about was would Summer remember him.  We even had to take Summer with us to the airport when he left.  Now, two years later, he is coming to visit for two weeks and again has started asking will Summer remember him and I certainly hope so or this kid may be a little hurt....

So, any input on this?  Do you think she will?

That's a good question & I don't know the answer, but I hope she does! Or, at the least, that she likes everybody & so when she acts excited about seeing a person it can look like she is excited about seeing your exchange student again...

Good luck!

I'd be VERY surprised if she doesn't remember him. He raised her and was there during her puppy year. They don't forget.

Do you have anything of his that might have some scent on it, or can you get it...a t-shirt, etc. It is amazing, but that memory will come flooding back like you wouldn't believe. My heart dog, who had lived with his new owners for 4 years and had only seen me sparingly in that time, came back here to finish up his Dual Championship. I drove down to the airport...of course, far more excited than I should have been...Hero came out of cargo, and out of his crate, shook, looked around and then went...."ooooohhhhhhh, MOM!!!!!" and jumped up on me. I swear if it had been a little kid he would have been jumping up and down. It was so cool.
Thanks for that memory trip.

I bet your visit will be great fun, and all too short!

I wouldn't worry too much.

We had a shih-tzu when we had a foreign exchange student from Mexico, when I was a junior in High School (I graduated in the late 80's). She left after Peppi's first year and did not return until after my mom died in 99. Peppi greeted her as if she had never left to include trying to climb into bed with her that night. Shih-tzus are not nearly as smart as GSP's are, but I would still have your friend approach cautiously, there will more than likely be a mixture of reactions from very happy to see him again, to somewhat upset this family member left the pack for so long.
