I have family up in Cedar Rapids, I can't get ahold of them so I hope they are ok. The pictures on TV are alarming, but I have learned not to completely trust the media. I had to laugh at "only 3 acres". While I have 1 1/2 acres I have a friend who has a little bitty yard and complains of the lack of space. I have to admit I like mine .. not too big, not too small.

I also laughed at 3 acres... we have a half acre in Tampa and that is considered a huge yard here... My husband would kill for 3  acres!!!  Jackson probably would too!

We are thinking of downsizing when Ron retires in Nov. 40 acres is nice for the privacy & the dogs but it is a lot to take care of. We would like to travel some, but it is really hard to give up all are privacy here. Our house is in the middle of the 40 & we have 40-80 acres on all sides . we would like to live right on the lake or river, we are about 15 miles away now.

We have less than a quarter acre but since we are at the end of a cul de sac most of it is in the back yard. If we didn't have a dog we would be looking for a patio home. Since our neighbors are close it is really great that they are nice.

Noahs Ark

The Lord spoke to Noah and said, "In six months I am going to make it rain until the whole world is covered with water and all the evil things are destroyed. But, I want to save a few good people and two of every living thing on the planet. I am ordering you to build an ark." And, in a flash of lightning, he delivered the specifications for the ark.

"OK," Noah said, trembling with fear and fumbling with the blueprints, "I'm your man."

Six months passed, the sky began to cloud up, and the rain began to fall in torrents. The Lord looked down and saw Noah sitting in his yard, weeping, and there was no ark.

"Noah!" shouted the Lord, "Where is My ark?" A lightning bolt crashed into the ground right beside Noah.

"Lord, please forgive me!" begged Noah. "I did my best, but there were some big problems. First, I had to get a building permit for the ark's construction, but Your plans did not meet their code. So, I had to hire an engineer to redo the plans, only to get into a long argument with him about whether to include a sprinkler system. My neighbors objected, claiming that I was violating zoning ordinances by building the ark in my front yard, so I had to get a variance from the city planning board. Then, I had a big problem getting enough wood for the ark, because there was a ban on cutting trees to save the spotted owl. I tried to convince the environmentalists and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that I needed the wood to save the owls, but they wouldn't let me catch them, so no owls. Next, I started gathering up the animals but got sued by an animal rights group that objected to me taking along only two of each kind. Just when the suit got dismissed, the EPA notified me that I couldn't complete the ark without filling out an environmental impact statement on Your proposed flood. They didn't take kindly to the idea that they had no jurisdiction over the Supreme Being. Then, the Corps of Engineers wanted a map of the proposed flood plan. I sent them a globe! Right now, I'm still trying to resolve a complaint with the Equal Opportunities Commission over how many minorities I'm supposed to hire. The IRS has seized all my assets claiming that I am trying to leave the country, and I just got a notice from the state that I owe some kind of use tax. Really, I don't think I can finish the ark in less than five years."

With that, the sky cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow arched across the sky. Noah looked up and smiled. "You mean you are not going to destroy the world?" he asked hopefully.

"No," said the Lord. "The government already has."

My prayers to all that you don't get washed away. It looks like down from us is just wasted. They show all the people but nothing about their animals. Can you even imagine all the dogs and others that probably died in these floods. And they say California is in a drought! Go figure. They need to build a huge pipeline and send it over that way.
Hogan - are you in the flood there? God I hope not!?

Hogan & Marie, we had some of your thunderstorms roll through Chicago this morning at 3:00AM. Lots of thunder and lightning and buckets of rain. The flooding in Wisconsin and Iowa has been all over the news here. I worked for a company based in Cedar Rapids a number of years ago, and even spent 9 months there for an intense 80-hour-a-week project. I couldn't recognize anything from the news footage, though. Hope you all make it through ok - I think the forecast for the coming week is rain-free after Sunday, at least here in Chicago.

Hogan, great looking spread!! I grew up on a couple of acres in rural Ohio, and I know it's a lot to take care of. Of course we planted almost half of it as a vegetable garden!! Loved to eat the fresh veggies, but hated the planting, weeding, picking, shelling, husking, etc. that came first.

Life is not complete without a dog!

Ace

They do have a big pipeline that takes the water to California (Nevada & Arizona) at least from Colorado---it's called the Colorado River. When my son lived in Las Vegas I kept telling him I wanted to go to Lake Mead to visit our water.

Hope your MRI comes out with good news. Healing takes time AND PATIENCE.

FWIW, AKC Disaster Team has been called in to Cedar Rapids and has responded in kind. The KC folks there say they are amazed at the rapid response, and positive results. Volunteers are badly needed to care for the animals. If anyone is available to do this, check on the AKC Website, or I will post a contact point once I get back to my home computer...

Just thought that I would update on what is going on in Wisconsin.
Interstate 90 and 94 have been closed down due to the flooding and the fear that the bridges are going to go. Including the bridge over the Wisconsin river.
The section of interstate that is closed is a section about 75 miles.
All of the traffic from these closures is bringing traffic to a stand still.
My work brought me to the Mauston, Wi. area this morning. Mauston is a town of about 5000 people, and it took me an hour and a half to get through this small town.

Ace. We are not really experiencing the flooding here anymore. We live in an area that they call coulee country, which is almost mountanous.

We don't have flooding here, just flash floods

We did loose a lot of roadways, bridges and hillsides due to the flash floods. Also a lot of mud, rocks, and trees washed across the roads.

There were also a number of vehicles lost when they went down stream.

This should keep Rangers hubby busy for a while

Glad to hear you are safe!
Tucker - is your lake flooded? The rivers and streams here are really full.

There was something that crossed my mind today about these floods. Is it my imagination or are we seeing a stark difference between the Midwest flooding and New Orleans.
Where are the people on the roof tops screaming for the government to help them out.
You don't hear "wheres FEMA" When is the government going to build us a new home?
You don't hear "This is George Bush's fault"

You also do not see looting, or rapes, cops being shot at, and you don't see gang bangers trying to shoot down national guard helicopters.

Looks like a lot of people in the Midwest just pitching in to help save their neighbors home or community.
These people are admirable!!!!!

Hogan,

I was in the great flood of the Red River of the North in 1997.  You are right we helped each other & no  one asked why isn't someone helping us, we were just VERY thankful for our neighbors. The helped us & we helped them evacuate livestock. My husbands whole office came & sandbagged our home, [ didn't help though,  we lost it ] someone volunteered to take our horses, kids , while we sandbagged. Anyone we wasn't flooding sent out offers to let strangers stay at their homes. Our pasture fencing was destroyed & a friend 80 miles away kept our horses for 5 months.!! I think that mid-west people are just a lot more caring.  I was out of town this weekend & Ron got called out on a smuggling case. The dogs were in the house from 10 am until 11 pm. He just called the neighbor & no problem,  they came over 3 times & let them out.

I am the County Coordinator for the Natural Disaster Response Team for the Minnesota Horse Council. It is to get food, evacuation, etc. for horses in case of a disaster. I wonder if there is any thing like that for dogs, besides the Humane society??
