I'm hoping some of you folks on the forum have some thoughts on this.  Not exactly GSP related but still puzzling to me.

My frriend just got a food allergy report back on her yellow lab (2 years old) and he seems to have tons of food allergies that the vet thinks may be contributing to ear problems.  Basically he is allergic to just about every meat I can think of (except  bison/buffalo) and is also allergic to just about all grains that would probably appear in most store brand foods (including soybeans, corn, oats, barley, rice and wheat). Milk is also very high on the list.

The vet gave her no guidance on what to feed him other than, "just look around to see what you can find" and our internet research is turning up nothing.

I'm really hoping you guys can point me in some direction.  I have a copy of the allergy report if you have questions or need more specifics.

Oh, that stinks! Poor dog!

Are there any other vets in the area who might have more experience with food allergies? From the lack of guidance your friend received I would assume that her vet isn't familiar with it. I know that if my vet didn't know the answer to how to make my dog healthier that he would ask someone else, but I have a fantastic vet, I wouldn't expect all vets to be like that.

Other than that, I am afraid I can't think of anything to help the poor pup.

Thanks for your thoughts. Yeah, she may need to find a vet that can help.  I suspected that this vet didn't really know what direction to go, either. Seemed like a tall order when I saw what all was on the allergy report.

Ironically, this vet is a second opinion. Her regular vet was satisfied to think that it was just a chronic ear infection that wouldn't go away or respond to treatment. Poor doggie's been having ear problems for more than a year now.

Anyone else on the forum have any thougts???

Check out this website -

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/

It lists a ton of dog foods and all their ingredients. Should be able to find something there.

I would have the dog retested. Food allergies are extremely rare in dogs and more often than not are misdiagnosed.

If indeed the dog is this screwed up then in all likelihood there are going to be a host of other chronic health issues to contend with down the road.

If both hold true than this dog's quality of life is going to be zero so before getting too far down that road a lot of things need to be considered. CR

There's a reason I like dogs better'n people... .

I see a lot of people ranting off on perfectly good dog food as if it's the bag's fault that their dog reacts adversely to it. Note I'm not talking about dirt cheap garbage that would rhyme with Falfo or anything like that... I'm talking GOOD food.

IMO breeders need to get the finger pointed at them for allergies to at least some degree. There are all kinds of dogs that can eat all kinds of stuff with impunity (see my artichoke thread for some head-scratchers), and from a survival-of-the-species thing this shouldn't be ignored as a significant asset.

Just a quick question? I can understand milk or grain allergies but I've never heard much about meat allergies. I would think that would be an enzyme problem. I wonder if they could make thier own food using something like spelt which according to my nutrition nutty friend is better than other grains.

I've often wondered if these allergies aren't to the meat per se but to the hormones, antibiotics, and other drugs that may 'ride along'. The only way to know would be to try organic of course.

I have a friend that assumed she was allergic to milk notice she had ZERO problems with organic. I suggested being a little careful with antibiotics in the future since that could have been what she was reacting to (hard to say for sure of course).

I had a cocker spaniel that had problems with beef.  I don't know if it was an allergy, but it would go right through her.  I had to feed her chicken.  I have a friend who had a dobe and was having problems with different meats (I think beef and chicken), and the vet told him to feed his dobe venison or lamb.  Not sure those are allergies or maybe some other kind of sensitivity.  I have also heard that lamb is easier for dogs to digest.

Mushers usually avoid beef because it's hard to digest. Fish and poultry is the 'gold standard' although lamb and beaver certainly get used, especially when it's cold.
