Ok, this may be showing my complete lack of prefessional knowledge, but I'm OK with that.
After reading some of the recent posts on foods, etc, I wonder about Osiris's eating habits.
When we got him from the rescue, we continued the regimen they had been doing.
He gets 3 cups of kibble (Purina One) in the evening and thats it.
Sometimes he eats it all and sometimes he just spreads it out all over the carpet and eats it as the evening goes on.
We also usually mix something into it, whether it's an egg, canned dog food, or cottage cheese.
I just wonder if we are feeding him enough. And I wonder if he doesn't like his food because like I said, sometimes he just doesn't eat very much of it and with the way he runs around all day, I feel like he should be hungry.
He gets very little people food - just a bit here and there but we do not feed him scraps from the table.
Is he picky? Is he getting enough? How can you tell if a dog is really hungry?? |

He's probably getting enough. Is he skinny? You should see a waist from the top and be able to see a couple ribs through his coat. If he's not too skinny, he's eating enough. If he's breathing, he thinks he's hungry. I wouldn't tolerate the behavior. It's OK if you plan to be a single dog household forever, maybe. Dumping food on the carpet is no good, IMO. I'd knock off the dab of "special" food. Constant food changes makes dogs picky, and you are likely triggering that. I would also pick up his dish if he doesn't finish in 15 minutes or knocks it over. Let him go to bed hungry a few nights and don't feed him until his regular time. He'll come around quick. |

Spot was a very spoiled 'only dog'. All the same stuff you described. We got him small and sickly and we just got in the habit of feeding him extremely well. We were thrilled when he would eat.
Then came Lola and competition for food. Overnight, all that changed and dog food is eaten within seconds of being put down. No more Mr Picky here. I get out the food dishes and they go in their crates and wait. They do still get that little dab of something good too. |

| I am once again grateful that I have never had a greedy gobbler dog! It is so nice to be able to leave the kibble out for them to snack on when they are hungry, supplemented by yummies in their bowl for breakfast & dinner. |

Was this dog a stray prior to adoption? I see rescue dogs do this alot, where they play with their food, grab a mouthful, then take it somewhere safe to eat...dropping some on the way. I do the feed at certain time, and they have 1/2 hour to eat, or I pick up all the bowls. Snooze they loose. Some people do like to "free feed", but I have some greedy ones, who would eat everyone's food if I left it lay out for awhile. So they get din-din when I say, not when they say. He will eat when hungry enough! |

I agree, Lisa. Free feeding to me is akin to standing in front of the fridge holding the door open for hours, or nibbling.any old time you want. You don't let your kids do that, why should your dog be able to. Many, if not most GSPs are ready to eat 247365, and being able to eat any old time...well, I could never keep mine in enough kibble for that one.
Goodies, treats, etc...a couple of the Wellness biscuits (about 1 x 1) for being good, listening, getting toenails trimmed quietly...no particular reason other than I'm glad you are my dog(s) and you are here . Those can come at any time, but are more likely to appear after regular mealtimes. (at my house, that's 2X day). Supplements, canned, veggies...do not go under the category of treats and may be given at any time.
Give us an idea of your dog's height at the withers and his weight, overall condition-skin, coat, etc.) ...

We don't know alot about his pre-rescue life. What we do know is that he was found as a stray with another non-GSP, and seemed to be about 6-7 months old and very thin.
Now, he is 53lbs, 2 1/2 years old, lean-looking but looks healthy, skin and coat are great!
After everyone's advice, I think I will make a few changes. I feel better knowing that 3 cups is ok. I will try the time limit thing and pick up the bowl after 15 minutes. We'll see how that goes. Thanks |

One thing we did with Wachter was to lock him in a room or his cage when we fed him. We gave him 20 minutes to eat then the food went away. It worked for him, but not for my shih-tzu she grabs mouthfulls of food and takes them to under the formal dining room table where she eats the food. I guess eating in the kitchen isn't good enough for her. Carrie |
