Hello everyone. Just thought i would introduce myself; been reading threads for a bit now thought i should dive in.
I pick up my 7 week old GSP this Friday. He will be joining a one year old Brittany in my home. We hunt and do hunting tests with NAVHDA and AKC. Plan to do the same with the GSP. His name is Kilian.
His pedigree is: Kilian der Vogelfanger Just click the link above.
Do any of you recognize any of the dogs? Any comments on the pedigree. Many show dogs i see in the immediate pedigree; more field champions in the next generations back. I was told many of the champion show dogs also were good hunters. I suppose i will find out soon enough. I will post up some pictures this weekend also. |

Hi and welcome. Cute face. Aside from the show CH I do not recognize any names. I do not see an indication that any of the dogs have been tested in a hunting venue. How did you decide on this litter to be your next huntig buddy? 2 young dogs, wow, are you the energetic one. Not me. I must be getting old. Francine |

You've got one show dog in the grandparents portion of the pedigree, not exactly "many immediate." If memory serves Serakraut used to run field trials. But the earliest field trial dog that could appear would be a great-great-great grandparent. But none of the names seem to indicate that either by being famous field trial kennels, or spin-off names of famous dogs. Anyway, from the pedigree, there's nothing to indicate you have a bad dog, there's just also nothing to indicate you've stacked the odds in your favor. You are on track with NAVHDA, and you will know very soon if you got all the tools in the tool box. Have fun and let us know how you make out. |

Thanks guys (and gals). Well i decided on him for a number of reasons. Ill try to explain as honest as i can. First being price.....yes i hate to admitt it but i can not afford a $1000 puppy, nore do i feel i need one. Second being location. I was searching the country (usa) and my state (Michigan) and through a few months of searching low and behold i found a breeder about 40 miles from me who also has pups that fit my criteria; price, color, temperment, ability, etc. So i checked the litter and the Sire, Dam out and was very impressed. The breeder owns the Dam and i have heard nothing but good about the Eulenhof line. The breeder also works for a bird farm and raises a medium sized bird farm himself. He allowed me to spend as much time with the Dam as i wanted and let me watch her hunt birds on the property. I was impressed. The breeder seems very honest and very sincere about his efforts to produce good dogs and improve his litters. He explained several attributes of the Sire and why he picked to have that dog stud......love of water, good nose and mild temperment. So in a nutshell that is why i decided to give this litter a try. I made it out and checked out the litter first and got pick.
So yes he will be tested in NAVHDA mostly. My Brittany just scored a 108 Prize 1 on his NA test last Sat at 12 months. He is almost ready for the UPT too. Prob a good month and he will be ready for that, though the test isn't until Aug. So more practice and reinforce work all summer while i enjoy the puppy GSP. No fur for the Britt but the GSP will be trained to track down deer.
I "hope" he becomes a great hunter and maybe he can add some credentials back to his bloodline. Being im the only person formally testing the dogs of the last litter and possibly this litter the breeder has offered me birds for training.
Now i know this post is long. But how far back do you guys look into a pedigree to even feel that the given dog has any meaning to the puppy? 2? 3 generations? My Brittany has a stacked pedigree with a couple hall of fame dogs and FC's and etc almost start to finish. But as others have said Kilian has no FC unless i go back prob 4 or 5 generations.
I will post more pictures on Friday.
Thanks
Bob |

Bob, I'm a bit more picky than you but here is how and why I pick a certain litter. I look for the first 3 generations to be hunted the way I hunt. Then I check to see that the first 2 generations have been tested and how the scores read. The more dogs tested in a pedigree the better, for me. I also want to see conformation wins throughout the pedigree on the majority of the dogs. I then check to see if there is line breeding, I will not buy a dog that has no line breeding. The only way to keep desired traits is to breed upon them. The reason I want to see tested dogs is because this will give me an idea of the mental stability of a puppy and what traits are likely to be passed on.If the parents were able to handle the pressures of training and testing most likely the puppy will also. Knowing how to read test scores tells me what areas the parents, grandparents are strong in and weak in, thus giving me a good heads up as to what I will get. Loving water is not the same as loving a search for game in water. Breeding nose is not an easy thing and is not a given. Breeding mental stability and the ability to switch gears is not easy and is not a given. The average foot hunter that only hunts upland may not care about this but to he versatile hunter/tester these traits are a very important. A dog that needs to be calmed down before a track may not have what it takes to do a track. A dog that needs to see the retrieve before it is dragged may not have what it takes. A dog that needs a gun shot before a water search may not have what it takes. These are just my opinion and what I look for. Like stated in another post, there is nothing indicating you made a poor choice just nothing indicating you made the correct choice. (Like that makes sense.) Francine |

pixie- i do agree with you 100%. A problem i ran into with searching for such a dog was I could not afford one. Or at least "I" could not find a breeder with those criteria selling for any less than $750. I am by no means a professional hunter or dog tester. First and foremost he will be a pet 365 days a year. He will be tested to see how he does and then never tested or competition, only hunting a good 15-20 days a year......that too was a large part of my decision. But i do agree completely with you! From what i can tell i think he is gonna work out. His nose works from what i can tell; without that he wouldn't be much for hunting right out of the box. I will keep you all updated with more pictures and things. Thanks Bob |

The only person who needs to be satisfied is you. And it sounds like you are. Post pictures when you get them. And don't forget pictures of the Britt. Francine |

I will for sure keep you all posted. I take my camera with me all the time.....who knows when the next $1000 American Funny Video might just happen, ahaha. I have a lot of Ruger the Brittany also.
Well im down to one day and counting.......like Christmas for me as a kid now.
Being about 7 weeks old do you all think i should wait before taking him out and about in public to stores and things to socialize him. I take Ruger all over with me. |

I'd be dancing with excitement about now if I were you... and if I wanted another puppy, which I definitely don't! lol...I freely admit that as far as I am concerned the best kids and puppies are those that belong to someone else! As for socializing, I would say as long as he is fully vaccinated (are they at 7 weeks? I can't remember, but that is pretty young) and you don't overstimulate him with too much all at once, that he will benefit from all the new & exciting things you can show him. |
