we don't feed the birds in the summer anymore because of West Nile, which the horses could get. I have been planting Butterfly & hummingbird gardens this year though.

I don't feed the birds because of the bear. :D

She has been seen lumbering up my driveway several times every year, so I am very careful about what I leave outside.

ECKS, That would be scary!. We had a bear last year just a mile away, could be one in the woods but never seen it. Neighbors saw a moose come out of our woods.

I'm not too scared, it's never come close to me, but I am cautious. My mom doesn't like to even look at pictures of bears, so she won't go outside in the dark when she visits. :P I haven't seen a moose in my neighborhood, but there are reports of them nearby all the time. I would love to see one... from a distance... when I wasn't driving in my car as it crossed the road.

Then there are the coyotes who howl in the valley below my house & drive my dogs crazy. And the the wild turkeys... although I haven't seen them as much in the yard since Daniel nearly caught one. If he hadn't given one excited bark as he charged towards them he might have gotten more than a tailfeather. Of course, what he got would have been a butt-kicking, turkeys are big and mean!

We also have a breeding pair of some type of raptor. They are never quite close enough for me to see which kind, and I'm not very good at identifying birds anyway, but I love to watch them circle above my house. I also startled a very large barn owl in a tree a year ago... although I might have been more startled than he was!

Yesterday we were coming home from the lake about 7:30 PM and a lovely young doe crossed in front of the car as I was going up the driveway. Daniel went WILD, barking & screeching & howling, but Layla was very quiet & intense. Interested but not sure what to think. Of course, Daniel still has a nasty scar from that deer attack several years ago, so deer are the enemy as far as he is concerned. :)

No its not summer yet, you'll need to wait a couple more weeks for the summer solstice & the beginning of the season. Mankind has recognized & celebrated the longest day of the year for thousands of years. Its not related to yesterday's temp, its about the sun's apparent height. Its forecast to be 94 today here, but I know its still spring.

This kind of post is precisely why I've started trying to ignore anything posted by see'n'spots.  It's 83 today with 72% humidity, and if that doesn't qualify as a summer day in Chicago I don't know what does.  Why do you have to nitpick everything?  Of course, everyone knows the official start of summer is June 20th.  Duh.  I'm so fed up with reading your condescending,  contrary and just plain at times stupid remarks that I may have to stop visiting this site.  I don't post very often, but I do enjoy looking at the pics.  And I've learned at lot more about GSP's than I would ever have through books.  But too often when I read one of your posts I end up with a sour taste in my mouth and in a bad mood.  Just lighten up a bit, will ya?

see'n'spots - I'll beat you to the punch and amend my post. No, summer solstice is not always June 20th. Sometimes it's the 21st. I couldn't find a reference to it ever being on the 19th.

Some forums have an "ignore user" option that I think might have become necessary here. I would certainly employ it in one case if it was available and I have always considered that a last resort option.

But, when a perfectly lovely & light-hearted thread about the frickin' weather turns into a snotty, rude & condescending diatribe from one particular member about how it isn't LEGALLY summer yet, I think the time has come.

No. There's no reason to "lighten up" SUMMER has been defined for a very long time & has nothing to do w/today's temp or humidity. Contrary to your claim "everyone knows the official start of summer is June 20th" that does not seem to be the case. That's why I wrote the less precise "you'll need to wait a couple more weeks". The calendar on my desk says "June 20th" however the calendar in the hall says the 21st.

evanston wrote: "I've started trying to ignore anything posted by see'n'spots. It's 83 today with 72% humidity, and if that doesn't qualify as a summer day in Chicago I don't know what does. Unfortunately "your posts" never distinguished themselves to me. Now you've exploded on my radar w/"condescending, contrary, stupid, sour taste & bad mood" Off Topic bashing. Based upon your mean spirited personal attack its all the same to me if you decide you "may have to stop visiting this site". You've contributed nothing I'm aware of that's of any value to me & seem to lack any sense of humor. Suggest you just refrain from reading my posts. Nobody's twisting your arm.

Actually the Summer Solstice isn't even a day, although we recognize the day it happens. Summer begins at the moment the sun reaches its highest point above the equator. I've experienced "83 with 72% humidity" in January-doesn't make it a "summer day".

And again, we were talking about the FRICKIN' WEATHER!

Lighten the heck up see'n'spots, we've all had more than enough of your bad attitude.

I feel sorry for the people in your life if you are even half as rude to them as you are to the people on this forum... if you haven't driven them all away already, that is.

unowhoandwhy, Yes, it was "a perfectly lovely & light-hearted thread" until the Off Topic personal attacks, like yours, began again. You're misinformed if you think "how it isn't LEGALLY summer" could explain this away. Whatever any jurisdiction declares "LEGALLY" can be entirely arbitrary. The Summer Solstice is not up to any authority to "LEGALLY" choose, its a part of nature people can only sit back & observe.

Of course I understand the common use as Tucker described "It feels almost like summer". To bad you have such a difficult time understanding what I consider "perfectly lovely & light hearted" & are so quick to jump on the humorless "snotty, rude & condescending diatribe" soapbox again & again. I can't help it if my career is in natural science.

The fact is that its not ASTRONOMICALLY summer yet.

We don't need an "ignore user" option since participation is 100% voluntary & you have the choice. However a 'Stop Off Topic Bashing & Piling On' option might be useful. You are "perfectly" welcome to "ignore" all my posts, especially not replying to any of them. The chip on your shoulder blinds you to my contributions here. Your inflammatory replies are no way to "ignore user" they're percieved as 'silence user' & seem antiAmerican to me.

Please go back & reread my disclaimer: "Now before anybody goes off on another round of condemning me, imagining some "condescending" & "hypercritical" sinister purpose, consider just for a second that I'm only mentioning this & not attempting to label anyone a "bad" person."

LMAO, since I was anticipating the 'piling on' would be related to Tucker mowing down the Dandelions & never imagined the hypersensitive would choke on the Summer Solstice.

Your repeated Off Topic diatribes condemning my style are boring, tiresome & guilty of precisely what you accuse me of.

2)However a 'Stop Off Topic Bashing & Piling On' option might be useful. You are "perfectly" welcome to "ignore" all my posts, especially not replying to any of them.

3)The chip on your shoulder blinds you to my contributions here.

1) There were no lasting problems till you started posting here. We all mostly got along quite well & there was very little of any kind of bashing. With very few exceptions, what little did happen was quickly resolved.

2) You really ought to take your own advice, as it is your posts that are so offensive. The rest of us tried to ignore your diatribes in the hopes that you would learn to respect the rest of us and not turn every single thread into a harangue about how we are all abysmally ignorant and only you, the all mighty see'n'spots, knows anything about anything. When that didn't work some of us started to object. To which you replied with ever-increasing levels of rudeness and self-delusion.

3) What contributions?! The angry diatribes? The insistence that you know best about everything? The unforgivably rude behavior that has already chased away several long-time and valued members of this forum? That sort of contribution can be done without, thank you.

If you can't see how offensive the majority of the people here find you, then why don't you take your toys and go play in the crotchety old man sandbox with the rest of the rude jerks in the world. If, however, you can learn the way to make this place better by your coming, not by your leaving, then please do stay and contribute somethign meaningful & polite, or at least tought-provoking.

I am 100% with everyone, LIGHTEN-UP Life is to short to go around making people mad all the time because they aren't using the " totally correct whatever " Do you know that you could be gone in the next minute, hour, day etc.. Do you want to go out of this world knowing that your last thoughts were pissing off a lot of people? I have used this forum as a way to keep my sanity from living so isolated I consider a lot of them friends & e-mail privately. I have also invited anyone on here to come stay in our guest cabin & go hunting, fishing or just relax. What I am trying to say is 90% of the posters on here just want friendly chit-chat about there dogs & to get help [ not criticism ] for problems with their dogs. I will not post about this again.

Wow!  So how about them Reds??? Or Cubs... or whatever part of the US you are in!!

We have had some whoppers of storms in the last week. The last two days, we had some of the most impressive thunderstorm cells move through the Ohio valley that we have seen in a long time. Lots of funnel clouds sightings and a few tornados on the ground! And lots and lots of rain! We have had lots of flooding, here, too.

And of course, we just got Osiris groomed and bathed and all he wants to do is go out and get MUDDY!

Luckily, Osiris doesn't do too bad with storms anymore. He used to be very scared of them.

One day, we were sitting on the couch and it was bright and sunny out. He was fast asleep and he suddenly bolted awake, jumped off the couch, and ran into the bedroom with his tail glued to his butt. I couldn't figure out what the problem was. About 10 minutes later, a huge thunderstorm rolled up and it was a crash banger!! I think he heard it or felt it that far away! Amazing!

Today, it is 95 and sunny with a heat advisory, and it's going to be that way into the weekend!! It sure does feel like summer here!

unowhoanywhy, Since you seem to thrive on this sort banter: Go back & check yourself. Everything was just fine on this thread until you piled on evanston's Off Topic bashing. So much for your "ignore user" ruse. Your relentless hypocritical OT onslaught clearly shows me exactly how members get "chased away". You're like the Muppet geezer demanding "Get him off!"

I'd suggest that you try discussing the "FRICKIN WEATHER" here, instead of going full bore OT, conspicuously trying to drive people away. OK, we all get it, you think my On Topic style is "rude, condescending", blah, blah, blah. For the record, I have nothing good to say about your On Topic style, but will refrain from characterizing it here out of respect for decorum. I try to deal only w/content & much prefer it. Your vicious OT attacks appear to be w/o end. You remind me of maladjusted dogs who can't start a fight on their own, but jump into a fight w/o reason. Thanks again for hinting I should be "leaving".

If you've missed my On Topic contributions, perhaps its you that should be "leaving"? On this thread I contributed that its not actually summer yet & how Spring's Dandelions may be linked to Honey bee & flower survival. In sharp contrast you derailed into your fear of bears & rabid offensive OT attacks. I never even replied to your post, but you went ballistic anyway, attacking even my private life! Its boring defending myself against your pathetic OT attacks. The last thing I'd ever normally do is suggest anyone should be "leaving". They should however keep On Topic & refrain from your sort of personal baiting. The only "lasting problems" I've encountered here is the huge chip on your shoulder & a pack mentality that tolerates piling on OT bashing.

Congrats on completely derailing this thread & exercising your need to lash out. I thoroughly regret having to defend myself again. Others must decide for themselves if they should "stop visiting this site" consider "leaving" or "ignore users". I'll never condemn anyone's style of On Topic prose. However be forewarned, I will feel free to challenge or amend facts as I see fit. Of course anyone is free to debate facts anytime. I'd never delude myself as being critic for "the majority" or discriminate against a "crotchety old man" or even the "rude jerks" of the world. IMO its just not "meaningful, polite or thought-provoking".

As Jack Webb used to say "Only the facts mam." On Topics that interest me, I want to know what anybody w/insight has got to say, regardless of their writing style & bedside manner.

I challenge anyone to show me where these statements of fact were "so offensive" in any way shape or form:
"No its not summer yet, you'll need to wait a couple more weeks for the summer solstice & the beginning of the season. Mankind has recognized & celebrated the longest day of the year for thousands of years. Its not related to yesterday's temp, its about the sun's apparent height. Its forecast to be 94 today here, but I know its still spring."

Now contrast my mild original comments with unowhoanwhy's extremely offensive & wholly OT littany of piled on "unforgivably rude behavior". The GSP Forum is a soapbox for everyone. Even those w/"bad attitude". What binds us should be our experience w/GSPs. If you're gonna be a heckler discover, rent, borrow, buy, or steal a sense of humor. I'm like the Muppet geezer calling for "More!" On Topic contributions.
