Some could be inclined to interpet "always laugh at" & "worst time believing" as meaning you condone winking at the sign.

Mydogiscrazy wrote: "always laugh at the sign in the forest that says, when your dog goes in the wood he doesn't just go in the woods. I have the worst time believing that dogs pooping in the woods is going to severely hurt my drinking water supply"

Do you in fact clean up any "poop" your GSPs deposit there?

I posted about aggressive dogs in Dog Parks & bad owner behavior. However the routine Pet Peeve has to be the general 'slacker' attitude about the dog "poop"! The Cty provides a "poop" bag dispenser, shovels & trash barrels, although they've failed to keep disposal bags stocked consistantly. That is no excuse for the large number of Land Mines left behind to caulk the sole of your shoe! Enough owners turn their backs on their dogs dumping loads of "poop" its a serious problem. I don't know why, but I have the impression the bigger the dog the more likely the owner will ignore their dog's 'monuments'! I've worked "poop" into Kal's training & keep him on a 50' & ask him to dump, until he dumps. That way I see it & have only 50' to go to pick it up. His reward is to be set free to run & now he practically dumps on command.

IMO once an owner gets accustomed to cleaning up after their dog, the easier it is to take the dog more places. Just Kal once took a dump at a fleamarket, but a vendor right in front of me gave me a bag & in seconds all was forgiven. Now he knows he'll get a chance before & after out in the far reaches of the parking lot. I usually carry a bag in my pocket & vehicle, even though I live rurally.

Interesting to find this topic at the top of the forum... I decided to leave my 10 week old Sofie in the crate today, until lunch (trying to get her housebroken). Turns out someone must have given her one too many wheat crackers last night... Poop all over the pad in the crate, stink all over the house...

Yep, I learned a lesson today. Certainly will not be the last.

So, I didn't want to leave everyone with the impression that I don't clean up after the my dogs, I do.  I found a neat hand scooper at PetSmart that looks like an oversized pincer.  You put a bag over it and can grab the poop in it and then pull the  bag down and tie it off.  You never get your hand or the scooper dirty.  Works great and I keep it in the GSPmobile (my Sienna) that way I always have it.

Here's a link as my description doesn't do the scooper justice: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753795

Way to run with that one, Spots. Your post is hypercritical and condescending. Again.
The sign is no where near a lake. The dog is comically pooping on top of the lake. And I am not a bad dog owner I just don't pick up my dog's poop when it is far back in the woods. Does that answer your question? Or should I put everything in quotes so you know what I'm referring to also?

Way to run with that one, crazy. Your post seems hypersensitive and suffering guilt. Again.

If you earnestly wanted to answer my Q, you'd have posted where the sign you "always laugh at" is posted so readers could assess for themselves how it might relate to anyone's "drinking water supply". For me its common courtesy, even if just asked to pick up your dog's "poop". You know that going in. If you can't bring yourself to comply, stay out. Its that simple. IMO if you disrespect the sign you besmirch every visiting dog owners' reputation.

If I enter public land that allows dogs w/Kal & the rules say pick up the "poop" I consider it a priviledge & pick up my dog's "poop". All of his "poop". Not just any "poop" that isn't dumped "far back in the woods". I do not trouble myself w/the reasoning, signage, or fact deer "poop" in the woods. I understand that dog "poop" is intrinsically offensvie. Dogs are excluded from enough places already. IMO responsible dog owners should try not to antagonize other users.

Apparently I hit close to home & your "laugh at" did often enough translate into "I just don't pick up my dog's poop" by your own yardstick!

Please tell us which lakeless property the 'comical' sign is on, also how many yards in "far back". Otherwise I'm begining to think its not your dog that's crazy. If a visitor stepped in dog "poop" & saw only both of us leave that property w/our GSPs, I'd have a 100% clear conscience. Knowing what we now know you could fully deserve to be criticized & condescended. What you should do is put everything defined as your dog's "poop" in a bag & dispose of properly when on public property that welcomes dogs, provided you clean up after them & not whine about "quotes".

I hunt on public lands in the woods for grouse and so on. I do not pick up their crap in the woods while hunting or hiking. If I was at the beach or in a park (none here) I would clean up after them. It is very disappointing to me here is that almost every part of lake MI and lake Huron near me is all no dogs allowed. Not even in the sand dunes. My dogs LOVE the water and it just really upsets me that they can't share our fun in the water. The one lake I could let them in is full of snakes and leaches so I will NOT take them there. I have to travel quite a ways to get near the water they can play in. The "Funny" part is; the signs don't get put up until tourist season. Usually June they put up the no dogs allowed. I don't know why they can't just put up the containers and say clean up after your dog? I am in the hick country here not sure where you 2 are from. I see both sides of the story. Too bad our dogs don't have to clean up ours! LMAO!
Well, that's my 2 cents.

Ace1cappuccino, I've only supported the importance of cleaning up after my dog on those public properties where it is required & where its obviously offensive. On "public lands" where its not required I use common sense & let nature prevail in out of the way places. Readers should come to understand that dog "poop" left behind is a major reason why dogs are prohibited from so many areas. Mostly I walk Kal on private land where he's free to dump.

I was extremely disappointed when I discovered the big Rail to Trails project here decided to prohibit dogs. Even more so when I also found out horses were OK! I also have to travel to access safe waters to let Kal swim. The local pay Dog Park has swimming ponds that are grotesquely treated w/chemicals. Fortunately the closest beach & backwater park remains open to leashed dogs. Owners ignoring leash requirements may ruin it for all & there have been dogs swept away by currents. I'd hate to find out accumulating dog "poop" & trash left by anglers causes further restrictions on this area, as I've seen in so many others. Right now some of my favorite signs are still in place 'Closes at sunset, except for fishermen' there are no signs about dog "poop". However I consider this a common courtesy, even if dog owners who walk in from next door don't. IMO these public lands are sacred & nothing prevents users from doing more than required to keep them nice. As a routine I pick up a bag littering the landscape, fill it w/others' trash & dispose of it. I often fish on Ft. Matanzas NM where the Spanish slaughtered hundreds of French Huguenots who refused to convert to Catholicism. IMO there's no room for dog "poop" on such hallowed ground despite a lack of signs requiring cleaning up.

Yes, I know what you mean. I believe that is why they closed all the beaches along the great lakes due to people not cleaning up after there dogs there. It sucks because the good people pay for the crimes of the bad.

Ace, it certainly is a common enough theme. My nearest beach still allows dogs, but they recently began enforcing county leash laws that most had "always laughed at". They also added cleaning up dog "poop" which to me always seemed to be a No Brainer at the beach. Because so many have the "worst time believing" dog "poop" on the beach could possibly be offensive & rationalized that the tide will wash it away, compliance is poor. I suspect its only a matter of time before dogs are deemed unwelcome at this beach as a result.

That's what happened here. I always bring my scooper when we go. It just bums me out cause we like to take the whole family to the beach for fun. Of course not all 5 gsps though. It would look like a stampeed through the water. They should put up signs like that and a place to put the bags in, rather than closing it to the dogs. Just a big bummer!
