You are fine, exept you might want to put them on a leash and break it. There's nothing wrong with a ritual per se. I mean, you probably poop at a certain time of the day, with a newspaper, perhaps.
The problem I have had was with my brother's dog. She only pooped off a retaining wall into a lake. Uncle Todd is an awesome dog-sitter, so she came to stay with me.
Since I didn't have a lake to poop into, she wouldn't poop until she really had to, then only between the couch and fireplace. So if you go hunting and stay in a motel, and there isn't any tall grass around, you might run into some difficulty with the evening's last potty.
As for what makes them want to do it... I think it's usually developed in the yard. Some "special" place. Maybe they get some privacy, maybe they do it to mark territory, maybe they don't like poop and think that'll get rid of it. I've seen a lot of males back into bushes to eliminate. |

You've got the unnatural rigors of potty training superimposed upon the instinct to scent mark. Many abberations result. Auzzie was a great 1 for searching for the right spot, like backing into briars, poison ivy, thorns, etc, didn't matter, so long as it was aimed off the ground & out of the way. Chip combined the GSP circling trait & went round & round, reversed himself & went round & round the other direction, before finally selecting just the right spot to leave a monument, always off the beaten path. Kal doesn't even break his stride, stops, squats & lets loose right in the middle of the road. Auzzie & Chip were also very reluctant to dump where they were tied, waiting patiently for the next walk & often dumping only near the furthest point. It was like they were planting a flag of conquest. Both were intact. Kal's neutered & has taken a dump on the deck, on the pad at the 1st outside step & on the ground just a yard from my car's door! IMO as long as they don't decide its cool to "poop" in your shoes you don't need to worry "Is something wrong?". |

| My husband use to raise Labs & he lived on a lake. One of his labs would poop in the lake! We took our horses in the lake once & they pooped in there too!. The cool water must feel good, LOL |

It doesn't matter how long I wait for Daniel to do his business in the yard, the minute we are out of the yard & walking somewhere we need poop bags, he will go then. I swear he does it on purpose, just to laugh at my attempts to juggle two crazy GSPs and a nasty poo bag. |

I totally understand! Duke is trained to go when he goes out on the leash. My other two don't do their business anywhere but my yard which is ok with me. The first time I took Duke out, he was still in crazy puppy... I'm in a new environment mode plus the other two didn't know about him yet so it was a chore to pick up the poop. I'm sure if someone had a camera they could have made some money with that video!

I bet we could all make money from our crazy GSP videos... if only we carried the cameras with us at all times to catch those "Only another GSP owner would believe this one!" moments. |

that is the truth! Unfortunately, we also need someone else to film us in the crazy gsp videos as we don't have a 3rd arm for the camera! If we did have a 3rd arm, not only would we look strange, but it would probably have another leash in it anyway.

Ace If you are lying there contemplating where dogs poop you have had way tooooo much recovery time. Seriously how are you doing after your accident? How is the truck coming along. |

The truck is done. They put about $7,500. into it. I get it back by tuesday. They forgot to fix the topper door so it doesn't latch. That is something for sure to be fixed. I am calling them in the morning. Not so good for me. I have physical therapy 3 x a week. Lots of stretching and heat and electricity. They are thinking I have something pinching the nerves that go from my neck into my fingers. I have to take so many pain pills that half the time I don't remember who I am! LMAO! Seriously I hope this "it'll get worse before it gets better" thing is true. As far as the dogs poop; yeah I do have lots and lots of time right now. I just wondered because the two males constantly have to find a branch or something to go on. As long as it isn't on me I guess I won't complain. Thanks for asking. Hope Molly is doing well also & you too! |

I always laugh at the sign in the forest that says, when your dog goes in the wood he doesn't just go in the woods. I have the worst time believing that dogs pooping in the woods is going to severely hurt my drinking water supply. As if there aren't other animals pooping in the woods? Second, if you want to talk about poop... Lacey ate an entire loaf of high fiber, whole grains, oat flax seed, all that super healthy stuff bread. We've been outside all through the night and morning, and its not easy to pick up. MAkes me giggle seeing her poop little flax seeds. |

I hope Lacey thinks real hard before she snatches your bread again. That doesn't sound like a very good night for the pooper or the scooper! Ace--I'm so sorry to hear you're having such a hard time--that sounds absolutely terrible. My husband had a herniated disk years ago, and man--those pinched nerves are no day at the picnic. After trying PT and a chiropractor, he finally had surgery and the difference was night and day. Hopefully they can figure out the problem soon and fix it--pronto! Take care! |

I never thought that was the logic behind cleaning up after our dogs. Mydogiscrazy wrote: "I have the worst time believing that dogs pooping in the woods is going to severely hurt my drinking water supply. As if there aren't other animals pooping in the woods?' IMO the idea is to keep "poop" off woodland trails & park lawns enjoyed by others & the "poop" odor out of our noses. If every deer in the woods dumped exclusively on the trails & their "poop" was as stinky & gooey as dog "poop" perhaps the picture would become clearer? |

no the picture on the sign is clear enough. it is of a park ranger and a dog and the dog is literally pooping on top of a lake. |

Mydogiscrazy - I often wonder about that too. We have infinitely more deer poop in the woods and on the trails than dog poop. Of course my girls try to help clean up by eating the deer droppings.
With regard to the seeds, we put corn out for the squirrels, doves and jays. The squirrels keep the girls entertained. Anyway Belle, and especially Halo, love to chow down on the corn, whole. I keep telling them they are bird dogs, not birds. It doesn't seem to help, and their poop is always full of corn.
That reminds me of a funny relationship with my parent's vizsla and their pet cockatiel. The bird would sit on it's food dish and throw food pellets at the dog, who would suck them out of the carpet. i think it started because the bird would use the cage bars to hold the pellet to break it apart. The dog would go eat pieces that fell out of the cage, and then somehow it shifted into the bird feeding the dog. Didnt seem to make much difference to the dog's poop though. That dog did poo out a 20-year old gingerbread house at one point. Now that was interesting poop.

I'd guess woodland trails specifically next to "a lake" are considered particulary vulnerable b/c of the short path for dog "poop" to directly enter "a lake". There'd be an expectation of higher traffic around "a lake" as well. Mydogiscrazy wrote: "no the picture on the sign is clear enough. it is of a park ranger and a dog and the dog is literally pooping on top of a lake" Forgive me for presuming your post was about dogs' "poop" in the woods more generally. Most of the woods I've walked my dogs in are not next to "a lake". A sign w/"picture" of a dog "literally pooping on top of a lake" wouldn't always make much sense around here. There are other issues regarding disease & safe guarding wildlife. Many a "drinking water supply" these days is far from pristine & most are regulated by unique 'authorities'. Deep well water is one thing, purifiying surface reservoir or river water another. Having never seen the sign you "always laugh at" I'd be curious where its posted, as a clue to why its there. Is your specific sign at "a lake"? At most access points to Paynes Prarie Preserve dogs are not even allowed in & people are restricted to trails. For some public land the trade off for letting dogs in becomes owners being required to clean up after them. Back in CT I joined a group that fought for hiking access to totally restricted & fenced watershed property around "a lake" that served as a "drinking water supply". The term 'muiltiuse' is still pretty new & often comes w/strings like this attached. |

Here in Barnard along the French Broad River we have an organization called PANDA. I've not met any of the memebers, yet. I did see their sign at the county park across the river from me. I occasionally go walking over there, normally without any dog(s).
PANDA = People Against Needless Defication AllOverThePlace
I'm not sure if they are just a local organization or regional, statewide, national or international.
They put up signs for the river rafters and/or fisherman who gotta go and don't want to use the facilities and then go into the brush to deficate.
Hopefully you are LYAO. I did the first time I saw the sign. |
