or as close to it as possible...

I just completely cleaned my car out from front to back and you would have thought I could have made another GSP by the time I was done.  The material that my seats are, kaiser's hair basically sticks to it and it's A LOT of work to get it all off.  (and i can't even say that it's all off, my arm is KILLING me...LOL).

Soooo....i'm wondering what you all do to keep your seats protected from there tini tiny hairs.  I've tried towels and sheets and within minutes kaiser has pawed and kicked them into a ball.  Is there something out there that will actually stay on the seat and back of the seat to protect our cars...and our arm muscles?

I feel your pain!! I have a Celica with dark seats and it's a constant battle with the dog hair.

We got seat covers for the front and back seats. The back seat one just stays on and I occasionally remove it to wash it.

The front seat one is just elastic around the edges and I take it off when he is not in the car. It is waterproof and does a great job of keeping the seat clean. Very easy to get off and on.

I keep a microfiber coth in the car and wipe down the dash, etc every few days.

It's just the price you pay to have them in the car!

This is what I have for the front seat:

and this for the back seat:

They used to make pickup trucks and even cars with vinal seats. These were handy if you were at the lake swimming all day and had wet shorts on when you drove home. That way you didn't get your butt wet all week while the car seat dried out.  They also used to make pickup trucks with 8 foot beds. Now to get a pickup with an 8 foot bed and vinal seats, you have to build it yourself. I doubt you can even special order them anymore. Now pickup=suv=luxury vehicle. I"m being a bit sarcastic here in case you can't tell.

I use those Indian/Mexican/falsa blankets that they sell at truck stops for about $7 or $8 to put over the non-vinal back seat of my auto. The dogs ride back there. I use 2 of them. Some hair gets thru but not a lot.  The seat covers would be the ticket, especially if waterproof too. Actually, I use those blankets with an old shower curtain underneath to cover the furniture in the house too.

Just a little "bit sarcastic"! My '98 "pickup" represents the 50th year of Ford F-Series pickups, while it doesn't have vinyl seats, the '98 literature from Ford offers vinyl seats, as does the '08 brochure. I'm may be wrong, but am pretty sure Ford has offered vinyl seats for 60 consecutive years, along w/vinyl floor mats. I'm being a bit sarcastic here in case you can't tell.

The leather seats in my SAAB Turbos held up to dogs riding surprisingly well & of course didn't 'Velcro' dog hair like so many cloth seats. After swimming I've never been a fan of driving home with "wet butt" & change. Even shore fishing in wet shorts & driving from spot to spot, its no big deal to wait until you drip dry fairly well, then sit on towels, newspapers, cardboard. Some seat bottoms seem to be designed to tuck a towel in behind a plastic cover, so as to cover the upholstery. I can tuck from 3 sides on both my vehicles & the towel stays in place quite well, even w/Kal jumping from front to rear. The rear has a heavy cloth drape big enough to tuck covering seat back & bottom.

I use a T-shirt stretched over the seat back on bucket seats. Easy on/off, easy wash/replace. I also cut out carefully fitted plywood platforms, that cover the seat bottom & reach across knee space, right up under the dash. Wrap it in complimentary color carpet & either hang it from hooks under dash, or make an upright to support it from the foot well, so it goes in/out in seconds faster than child seat.

I have leather, so its easy to wipe off hair, muddy paws, and over exertion vomit (yep). But the leather has gone from shiny gray to a dull, scratched, torn dingy brownish leather. I basically gave up. The car is all but two years old, and I have already decided to give it to the dogs. One day I'll get a BMW and the dogs won't be let anywhere near it (yah right, that will last the same way that the dog barrier worked).
And the paint? Scratched all along the windows and side view mirrors, probably the top right outside the sunroof, whereever that girl can put her feet so that the maximum amount of body is out of the car she will, and my paint takes a licking.

Just keep cleaning as you go, otherwise that hair builds up. If you have fold down seats, check inbetween those too.

Our Ford has leather seats, during our vacation, we folded up the rear seat and put a dog blanket down, as well as a cushioned dog bed. We didn't seem to have dog hair "flying" about  as we drove....which I always had with my Labs.  Since Bean was new to the swimming thing, our biggest obstacle in the truck, was SAND...after she went swimming she liked to lay in the sand...then since she dries quickly, it all falls off in the truck...BUT we said "WTH" she's on vacation...so we just ignored it....

MY TOP SECRET fix all for controlling the hair and any other ( side effects )  is........drum roll please

My husband has a 4 wheel drive truck we take on long trips to the mountains.  It has leather seats which we cover with Indian blankets.  Works great and the seat leather is protected.  I have a Sienna mini-van that has leather too.  I have seat covers on the two back seats and they come off and are easily washed.  When we got Belle as a pup, I started her in the truck in the back seat (I had the 1998 50th Anniv Ford too) .  She was not allowed in the front seat from a puppy and I got my husband to help, and taught she had two options, sit or down when traveling.  We did the same thing with Halo.  So, both my girls jump into the vehicle back area and (if it is my mini-van) Halo claims her seat behind the passenger and sits in it like a person, and Belle lays down and stretches out in the back area.

Oh, we also cover the floor of the mini van with moving blankets (you can get them from pet supply catalogs cheap).  They are heavy duty and washable. So, when we take the blankets and seat covers out of my minivan you can't tell dogs were even in it.

By the way, I have a mini-van as I take both girls every where including dogs shows where I show them in conformation and obedience.  It has enough space and the dogs can stretch out.

I'd be very careful about this, or else you might find your car dog free!

Mydogiscrazy wrote: "whereever that girl can put her feet so that the maximum amount of body is out of the car she will"

I also made armor for the pass door handle/panel since Chip stood on both the vinyl armrest & hard pastic window sill. Chip also enjoyed getting "the maximum amount of body is out of the car" this way. One day he got excited when he saw dogs entering a big box pet supply as we passed on the main drag. Chip lost his footing & the front of his "body" slipped "out of the car"! Momentarily, his hind quarters caught on the sill. Then he was gone, outside, to fend for himself on the street in the other lane of traffic! Fortunately traffic was heavy & slow, however it may have been a mixed blessing that he was tethered to the vehicle by a 50' lead. I jammed my brakes, pulled away to L, hoping to avoid my own back wheels from running him over! Did the Chinese Fire Drill & found him standing there, as if nothing had happened!

A few blocks later I pulled off at a Fire Station. My heart was racing & I could hardly believe he hadn't been hurt. Sat down w/fireman & explained, saying I might need oxygen/smelling salts from the adrenaline rush, had found a dog person.

After that I kept the window 1/2 way up & discouraged Chip from putting his feet on the sill. If you have to pen the window widely for the dog at least leave it up a couple of inches & try to keep the dog's feet on the inside.

I've always thought the car belonged to the dogs as soon as they rode in it.  Those short wiry hairs just work their way into the upholstery.  I don't think you can ever get them all out.  Leather holds up the best for us but I hate getting into leather seats when it's hot outside and the dogs probably find it uncomfortable too.  So I go for the clothseats with ground in dog hair!  I figure all my clothes have dog hair already.

years ago I had a camaro, and the rear hatchback switch was in the center console betwwen the front seats...I'm ALMOST certain, that the switch wasn't active while the car was in gear ????

However, I took my Lab Ruger with me 24/7...and more than once I came out of the grocery store to find the rear hatch WIDE OPEN...and him just sitting inside the car...

The car had T Tops as well, but he never seemed interested in climbing out through there either.....That was a  ONE IN A MILLION....dog....Bean would NEVER be so calm with an open get away staring her in the face....I'm still working on the STAY...while she is inside the truck, she wants  to bounce out as soon as I stop & crack the door...the vacation helped, constant REMINDERS  LOL

I have leather seats too. I put a queen size comforter in the back seat. I tuck it in behind the head rests and try to keep it up on the door. Since there is extra room it doesn't matter if they move around or not. They still get hair on the carpet but that's not as hard to clean. I would think that a blanket would work just as well with cloth.

i also had leather seats when i had my SAAB and it was great with both gus and kaiser. but i traded that in for my saturn VUE and of course i've had this problem with the hair since. i just can't do blankets with kaiser...no matter what i've tried he gets them off. I looked at the link of the backseat cover but i don't think that would work with a carseat.

renee - OMG i can't even imagine coming out of the store and seeing that....LOL

when i had my SAAB i would open the sunroof and the side windows and you should have seen the laughs i got with a GSP sticking out the top of the car and a beagle hanging out the side...LOL LOL

We have grey fuzzy furry car seats so the GSP fur just blends in and you cannot see it We donot wear any fabric clothing that fur clings to and I totally stopped wearing any clothes that are black since adopting a liver and white ticked GSP. Now the all solid liver GSPs like Jodi's Jackson may have another fur car hair free suggestion or advice

Yes. A lint brush in the center console is mandatory, and I keep windex and roll of paper towels in the car to clean the nose prints off the windows. I don't know why she has to look out the front windshield when we go somehwere, but she really jams her face into- as if we are going to get to the doggie park any faster that way.

Forgot, did anyone mention using tape to remove hair from cloth 'velour' seats? I like a roll of Duct Tape, but masking & other wide tape works. The idea being that you daub at the hair w/sticky side until tape loses it's tack from hair & dust, requiring a new piece.

I have done the reverse tape roll (especially on my cloths) What you do is wrap the tape around your hand sticky side facing out, then you just run it along whatever you are trying to remove hair/lint from.

Crazy.. it is my back window that has all the nose prints... Wachter has to drape himself over the back seat and bark at all the cars we have passed to let them know he is going bye bye. Doesn't care where he is going.. just that he is going.

Thanks for reminding me. Kal has gummed up the windows pretty bad. Fortunately its a long reach to the windshield. However the middle side windows have missed the last cleaning cycle & are embarassingly smudged up.

Dog hair & nose prints on glass are minor doggy inconveniences. Chip managed to raise his head near the steering wheel & nicked the shift w/his nose going 70 on crusie control, hard enough to knock it out of OD. There was no sound or anything & I just slipped it back into OD & hit resume. Shortly later I saw a shrimper selling by the road & discovered there was no reverse! Chip also had the extremely annoying habit of knocking the rear view mirror out of whack countless times & smudging it.

ha. my rear view is never at the correct angle! And Lacey knocked me into reverse once in the middle of the intersection. you know that instinctual reaction mothers have to put their arm out in front of their kid in the passenger seat (mostly, before airbags and all) well i pretty much read the road and turns and braking and know when i have to grab lacey so she doesnt go flying into the dash or i guard the gear shift from her errant paws.
