Tucker, there have been a couple other vets that have come and gone through my vets office. I love her and her staff so much but I call ahead to make sure that Colleen is going to be there when I need an appointment.
Once you find a good one stick with him/her. In case of an accident one that is closer would be safer for sure. I am lucky, it is about 40 miles to mine. I made it in about 10 minutes (give or take) when Mocha had been Quilled, and when Hunter broke his toes, and Belle 2 times for major injuries. They have taken such good care of us.
Short story - close vet is good.
Better vet is further is a bummer but see how they treat you and your babies, that is the one I would stick with for sure.

Holy cow!!! I guess I kind of have it made over here. I have the most wonderful vet in OH who does my major stuff that I can wait to have done when I go there. As for my home vet, the office visit is about $28 I think. I'm not sure how much vaccines are because I self vaccinate all of my dogs except their rabies. You can purchase vaccines for anywhere from $4 to $10 ea from Tracker supply, Fleet Farm or on-line at Fosters & Smith. They keep for about 2 yrs in the frig, some come with the syringe & some you have to buy separately. I do all my DHLPP & Bordatella my self. If I go through 1 of my vets, my Sentinal is about $10 ea & if you keep them on it all yr round you don't have to get them re-tested each yr. My other vet charges about $16 ea for the Sentinal. When I had my litter I went to my local vet that I've been using for the past few yrs & my girl's c-section was only about $500, when my old vet that I had been using for about 15 yrs or more wanted $1750. I had my entire litter's dews & tails done for $15 ea pup. I think my local vet charges $23 for a rabies, but the local humane society will do a yearly for $5.

Rebecca - thanks for that, I never thought about getting a shot from the Humane Society. I think my vet was $5 each for tails and dew claws. I am going to start getting my shots through foster & smith or lions country supply. Is there a chart of what shots they actually need? The foster and smith one doesn't read that well and more or less stated they need every shot each year. I know my dogs just got rabies & distemper 3 yrs. But what about the others?

In Milwaukee, I probably spend $200- on each dog per year for std vaccines, including Lymes and heartguard from Foster Smith. Course my old pointer Maggie is a whole nother story...

My last vet was always very pleasant & especially convenient, but destroyed my confidence in her. I'd used their pharmacy until I realized I could buy the same meds for a fraction of their price elsewhere. They'd estimate cost under $300 when you decide what to do & you could bet it would be under $400. Reactions have been mixed when I've revealed that vet's name, some swear by her-others roll their eyes & curse. In the end 50% of vets graduated in the bottom half of their class. This vet has a wonderful new clinic & car. I've tried 2 new vets, the 1st had no style or manners at all, yanked me around when I'd 1st gotten Kal, charged me for services I did not ask for & didn't even have the courtesy to introduce me to the actual vet. The Cty. provided rabies shots for $6, but wouldn't b/c the microchip hadn't been transfered. The vet gave rabies shot for $28 & the certificate could go to the Cty. for a tag, no Qs asked. The 2nd was OK, but seemed to be pretty green & into Fast Food vet care.

Previously I'd had a vet that was kind of surly, arrogant & deserving of an F for bedside manner, but also came very highly recommended. He'd had GSPs a long time, got obedience awards, provided snake proofing, had special surgical skills & was worth the ride. Unfortunately he shut down & retired.

I think our yearly check-up was a several hundred dollars (between $300 and $500) depending on the vaccine schedule. I'm pretty sure that this was expensive, even for Chicago, but it turned out to be worth it when Maggie got sick. Our vet was so dedicated to doing the research to figure out what was wrong, getting expert opinions, and keeping us informed so we could make good decisions. She was also very patient with all of my questions and took extra time talking with me when I needed it. Because of her help, Maggie had two additional (mostly) good years. The entire office was also so compasionate when we had to put her to sleep. (But I've never had to do that before, so maybe all Vets are the same when it comes to that.) I trust her completely and will definately use her for our future pets, even though there is a Vet office that is literally right around the corner from our house, which I hear is less expensive. I'm happy to pay extra to get extra service and attention.

I have one vet office that charges me to write a perscription, so I can order cheaper on line! When Maggie started phenolbarbital, I had my local vet call a script into Walgreens, just more convienent for me to pick up and 1/2 the price! You gotta shop around to keep your vet honest!

I think we just paid about $135 for Browning's annual exam, shots and heart worm test.  Our vet started her own practice about 8 years ago.   I'm sure there are cheaper vets around, but we've used our vet since 1989 and followed her when she started her practice.  We get a lot of Virginia Tech vet school graduates in this area, and it's easy for them to keep up with the latest techniques, treatments and thinking.

I dread looking for a new vet when we move to Alabama, although given our proximity to Auburn, I expect that most of the vets there will be just as current as the ones here.  And I don't expect it to be any cheaper.

I pay 200.00 a dog - all shots, office visit and 1 year of heartguard. 3 dogs = 600.00, my old dog I have extra blood work done and it runs about 275.00. It is worth ever penny to me.

I have only used 2 vets since I moved here. The first one for 20 years, it was a private practice with 24x7 care and was great. When they sold out to a corporation they went downhill fast and there prices went through the roof and I felt like a number. I found my current vet and could not be happier - only wish they were 24x7 but I guess they have to have a life too :)

It is nice to hear a vet say they are happy to get goodies. I am one of those people that bring x-mas baskets to the vet and other goodies just to say thanks for taking good care of my dogs (my husband thinks I am nuts) :)

Here is Jackson's bill from the vet today:

Office Call                                                                                            $10.55

Exam - puppy wellness                                                                    $26.60

Rabies 1-year                                                                                    $13.37

DHPP Booster                                                                                   $19.72

Lymes Booster #2                                                                            $20.76

Frontline                                                                                             $16.28

Total today $108.50

We didn't get the heartguard today, because he won't need to take it until June 1 and I'd like him weighed then. His last dose was a free.  The vet told me that for the next year Jackson will only be getting boosters and will not have to see the vet and that should help keep costs down.

We do Heartguard year round now because the winters haven't been killing off the heartworms the way they should (although this last winter was bad enough to kill half my blueberry bushes, an azalea and three shrubs, so I doubt the heartworms survived!). But, better safe than sorry, the dogs get their yummy "treat" on the first of every month now.

This evening we had to go see the emergency vet.  Halo was apparently (we didn't see it happen) playing the in the backyard and had a close encounter with a (we think) small limb on a bush.  Anyway she ended up with a puncture on the back webbing between her leg and  stomach on her right side.  It penetrated about 3 inches between skin and muscle and left about a 2 inch hole.  Needless to say mom and dad were freaking.  We took her to the emergency clinic as our vets office was closed.  Here is what it cost.

Exam      $45

Emergency RM Fee      $33

Clip, Clean, & Mild Med      $25 (they had to flush the wound for debris)

Skin Staples      $13

Prescription for Antibiotic      $26

Prescription for Pain Meds      $18

Total:  $160 (not bad for an emergency vet clinic)

She is now home and sleeping, and she has to go see her regular vet tomorrow afternoon.  No running, playing, jumping, etc for at least a week.  Alls well that ends well, at least until she starts feeling better and making us crazy.

Daniel & Layla had a vet visit yesterday. Daniel needed some lumps checked out (we have scheduled a lump removal just to be safe) and his nails were long enough to be more like talons. Layla needed rabies, distemper & heartworm plus a nail clipping. They both needed more Heartguard. Here's what it cost me (I love my vet even more, now!):

Daniel - Courtesy office visit $0
Courtesy pedicure $0
Heartguard $39

Layla - Courtesy office visit $0
Courtesy pedicure $0
DHP-CPV $23
Rabies $23
Heartguard $27

Minus a 5% discount for bringing 2 animals at once, it cost me $109.70.

The "pedicure" description was the vet's, but I like it, made me giggle to think of Daniel & Layla with their paws soaking in... whatever it is you soak your feet in when you get a pedicure & then having them painted. ;) :)

I use to work at the vet that i take Kaiser too...so thankfully if i take him in for something other than his annual check up they usually don't charge me for something. And for the annual visit, since there are vacc's they don't charge an office call. For distemper, 3yr rabies, frontline, heartworm test, and ear solution it was $140.00. I do think that I'm going to start on only getting him his distemper vaccine when he gets his rabies every 3yrs. and i don't do the bordetella anymore because i never board him. his heartworm preventative is 6.70/mo and frontline is 13.75/month.
I have also taken kaiser to a vet by where we camp because they have been cheaper in the past, but now it's only by about $10 for his yearly exam.
There has been a little vet change over since i worked there and i've usually seen one of the vet's that i worked w/ and they always take the time to really look kaiser over. for his yearly i requested one of my fav's and when i got there, they had scheduled me wrong and i saw someone that i never saw before and didn't like him at all. i will definitely make sure that i get who i want next time.

Oh Middleofnowhere, those vet prices for your 2 GSPs are wonderful!!! Layla and Daniel are very fortunate to have a sweet Vet to give multiple dogs visit a break in price!!!... Today Rocky got his nail trim by his Vet and she is special too. She just charges us for the nail trim only, no office visit.Today, Rocky weighed in at 88.4lbs so our Vet was happy Rocky is down from 90.6lbs. The neighbor morning dog walking group we belong to is paying off. We have been walking 5 mornings a week around the block plus walk thur 2 hugh farm field to give all 8 dogs to run and play together off leash. The heavier Labs in the group are starting to see some curvature in their waist. Of the big gun dogs in this group, Rocky is the tallest and thinest. All 3 labs range from 103lbs to 98lbs One Golden Retreiver tips the scale at 130ls.l We keep each other going!! Both humans and canines get alot of exercise, fun and laughs!!

Max had not been feeling well for a few days.  At first I couldn't figure it out, I thought it was just the heartworm treatment, but then he vomited and the next day with the loose stool business.  So, in to the vet we went.  I don't have the breakdown of each individual item, but this is what he ended up with:

antibiotics shot, pills to stop vomiting (3 twice a day; 3-4 days worth), pills for his GI tract malady, 1/2 pill twice a day, 10 days worth.  his iverheart max was 42 dollars i know (6 months).  He also had a test I think it was called a GI test.  He was sampled from inside and it was analyzed.  No parasites, but the doc thinks he got into some bad grass (heh, not that kind) or something.

All of that cost 92.50 which I believe was a great deal.

His heartworm treatment which was 2 shots and then 30 days later another shot cost 175.  He also got his last shot for that as well.  Poor guy won't ever let me take him out alone anymore I'm sure.  To make matters worse, I left him at home to rest while i took Bug out to play with my friend's rottweiler "Cash Money" at the park with the water and the ducks.  I had a 50 ft check cord that she got to play with.  She went out quite a ways into the water!!! No swimming, but wading.  I got quite the look from Max when he discovered she had been out with another dog!  It was priceless and I wish I had a camera.

BTW, Bug's 'tutoring' cost 88.50.  I think that's all the vet expenses so far...  and that's only a month!

Bug's tutoring only cost $88.50. That vet deserves a big basket of cookies. I looked up the colst to get Molly spayed--$285. Big fancy office--never the same vet. We don't go there anymore and I like the vet that we have had for the past 3 years.

He's one of those old timers that is in it more so for the animals than for the money I believe.  His office doesn't even have a computer!  The receptionists said they had to talk him into getting a cordless phone!  He's a really nice man and is wonderful with the pups.  Plus, he's only 1/2 mile from my house so that is just icing on the cake!!
