Just wondering what every one pays for yearly check-ups. I think our vet is a little high. $23-office visit, $28-heart-worm test, $40.70-heart-worm meds. They had a vet clinic at the fire station & a vet from a town about 80 miles came., all three dogs total bill- $197.00, my vet it would have been $377.00. I think the drive might be worth it. |

I wish I had Annual Totals like that.... Just shy $2,000. for HEALTHY dogs, not including the $2,500. - 3,000. for a Breeding.... But then my feed bill a year exceeds $3,000. :-0 |

I spend more on my dogs than I do on me! That's expensive!
Having a dog isn't cheap. I think that's why so many don't get proper medical care. Too bad there are so many people who would love to have a dog and can't afford one! |

Rocky's Spring Vet visit: Routine exam $20.00, Bordetalla Vaccination $17.00 Heartworm/Combo test(anaplasma /lyme test) 30.00 Pedicure $9.00 Interceptor(51-100 lbs) 12 each pak. 76.80. Total $152.80 Rocky's fall exam in November he gets his Rabies when due (every 3 years), DHAPP/CV vaccine and Lyme. Rocky gets his yearly supply of Derma Pet Malacetice Otic all natural Hypo allergenic ear wash to keep his ears healthy and clean. a nail trim and intestinal annual parasite exam. The cost is around $70.00 for the Fall exam. You may ask why I have Rocky's vaccinations split up 2 times a year? It just fell that way the year we adopted him as Rocky had alot of his vaccinations done in his foster home. |

| Cost of Vet School loan$100,000, cost of buildling $400,000, cost of equipment such as anesth. machine, xray machine, computers, ect etc $500,000. cost of stocking all the drugs, needles, vaccines, frontline, heartworm meds $400, 000.00, salary to employ receptionists, technician, misc kennel help, bookkeeper $100,000.00....add in insurance, on building, etc etc etc....why would you begrudge someone with that much debt to start out their life with a few bucks out of your pocket? Jeeez...I just love the people who begrudge their vet routine exam and vacc by going to the nearest Petco, Firehouse rabies clinic, and then when they have tried fixing something on their own for a week, suddenly want that same vet to be happy to meet them at midnight as a "loyal" client. My pet peeve sorry. Im not a vet, just worked in the busines for the past 35 years im proud to say. Trust me.if a vet wanted to be rich, they would have gone to medical school. easier to get in to and make a whole pile of more money. Your vet and the majority of them went into the business because this is what they love. and by the way it is a business...why should they not make a living from a business just like anyone else in the world?....spend a week at your vet clinic...see what goes on behind the scene, see the hours they put in all day, watch them be physician, psychiatrist, nutritionist, radiologist, surgeon, ob/gyn all in the same day. ...think think think before you bash your vet for a few bucks...its probl. going into someone elses pocket before it goes into their. Sorry for the rant so early this morning. |

I love my vet and in my area he's the most affordable around.... Brought in 4 dogs last weekend, 4 heartworm/lyme tests, 4 sets of parvo/distemper (3 year), 2 3 year rabies, 4 exams, 1 ear slide for some gunk Total = $524 Not cheap but today I have a foster going in for heartworm treatment -- charge will be $50 for the shot and $100 more if he feels she needs xrays. Can't beat that And I trust him never to ever recommend a test or treatment that isn't something he feels is necessary. Worth the money |

gsplvr, I am yet to see a starving vet. I live in the NYC area and the prices are pricey. My family has owned dogs for over 75 years. All breeds. No one ever had heartworm, yearly shots, only rabbies. And that's what I do with all my dogs. The vet sees me and he knows he ain't making much. He charges me a high office visit, $68. I know several dogs who have the symptoms of lyme disease from recieving the vaccination. no thank you.I also believe that yearly vaccinations wear away at the dog's immune system. We have been lucky, no serious injuries or the other stuff said to be gotten if not vacinated against in all the 14 years of owning dogs.I do not recomend this to anyone. Just my experience. I do have a really good vet story. I knew this vet from my days of owning a pet store. We took our old girl there, she was on her last leg and I was insisting he put her to sleep. He refused. Said he could find nothing wrong with her requiring she be put down. He gave us no medication and sent us home. I nursed her for nearly 2 weeks and you know what, she lived another 3 years. I figured out later what had happened to her. I made some white rice and she ate it when it was to hot and burned her throat turning into an infection. Her body healed itself. I still miss her. Francine PS- we have saved so much money I think I'll go sit on our yacht now. (yeah, right) |

gsplvr I don't thing they were complaining about the vet bills, just comparing prices. I know here I have a sizeable choice of vets, and their prices have a large range. I have one vet that will charge $13 or $14 for different shots and will drop the exam fee for their regulars where another one will charge in the $20's for the same shots PLUS an exam fee. |

I think the point that dogs aren't cheap is also important. Many people dont think of that when they get a dog, and then when bills get tight the first thing to go is vet bills on a 'healthy' dog.
It's really helpful to have an idea of what annual checkups should cost, although it will definitely vary around the country and between vets. It's like going to a mechanic- he'll charge you for various things, but unless you get a second opinion or know something about cars, you have no idea whether that is an appropriate cost for what he did.

I love my vet. She is the most helpfull loving person I have ever met. She always knows my animals by name and they love her too. All the staff treat me and my gsp like family! She is a bit more expensive than one that is closer, but I don't care. For the service she gives I will not ever change. I would reccomend her to anyone I know.
It is $40 for a thorough checkup. Normal heartworm test is like $30 but on heartworm day it is $15. She sent my dogs scripts to foster & smith and it is alot cheaper that way. I bought the first one for each dog through her though. If I wasn't doing 5 of them I'd just buy from her too.
She has always made time to sneak us in if there is a problem. She will even come to the house if it is something that I can't travel for. She went to my friends house to put a dog down so she was at home with her mom when she passed. Just thinking of that scares me because I know someday I will be in that spot myself.
Anyways, yes it is expensive but all her schooling and I imagine all her product prices went way up too. So remember that. Our babies are worth every cent.
That's my 2 cents worth! |

It has taken me awhile to find another good vet since mine moved. I actually lucked out and got in with 2 great vets. One was a class mate of my dad and grew up in the same town where I live The other is my friend's brother-inlaw. They are both great and personable. Star has a thing for one of them and is not happy until he lets her lick his face and gives him a hug.
When it comes to check-ups is about $25 and there is a discount for each additional dog you bring in. From my last bill he only charged me $15 per dog. Shots are general around $15. I just had their heartworm test a little while ago and that was $18 and the meds depend on what you want to have them on.
It is always a given that I spend at least $100 or more each vet visit. |

My vet has very reasonable prices for the area and, most importantly, they like my dogs as much as my dogs like them. No matter what, I have never, ever had a bad visit with them and, having been to some vets who weren't good with my pets, that is worth paying more than I do. Actually, I was just talking to a friend from the northern part of the state and her vet gets $300 for "de-quilling" a dog. Mine charges only $75 and it is the exact same service, including knocking the little monster unconscious and keeping them there all day till they recover. |

I live in suburbs of Chicago and last week we took our three GSPs to get their annual check up, heartworm tests, mini blood panels, etc. For the tests, three sets of May - Dec heartworm and flea meds, and one dog's lyme vaccine it was $570. I'm not sure if that's expensive relative to other areas or not, but I do absolutely love the vet we go to and am willing to pay whatever to have her be there for our "babies."
As a side note, our vet's office is right outside of our subdivision and when I drive by at night and on the weekends, our vet's car is always there. I know ours works really hard for her patients, so I don't even question the cost when we have to go.
One question while we're on the topic of vets...our female's mini-blood panel came out showing low glucose and low platelets (this was last Saturday), so we are going to take her back in a few weeks to get another panel just to make sure it was nothing. The vet doesn't seem to be worried about it, but I did go online and searched and found very serious health issues that "may be" linked with low glucose and/or low platelet counts. Has anyone ever had a panel come out with inaccurate information (maybe because they had eaten recently, were stressed at the vet's office, etc) that later was found to be a fluke?
Thanks |

Having read the thread I had to go back to my records to for comparison. My vet who I have been using for years and is absolutely the best charges the following for an annual exam:
Wellness Exam is $69.57 and includes all the shots/tests (rabies, DHLP Booster, Parvo Booster, Heartworm test, Fecal Exam). Then I usually do an annual lab test (full blood panel) for 72.12, Bordetella for 18.01. I do the full blood panel as I had a dog that ended up with Cushings and the way we found it was through the annual blood work (not a GSP). The vet then adds in 4.00 for bio hazard disposal. I buy Interceptor and Advantage for two dogs (94.15 and 101.80 respectively) for a total of $366.33.
I have recently started buying the Advantage through dog.com as it is a lot cheaper and will probably get a prescription from the vet to send off for the Interceptor next time I go in.
I am very happy with my vet and don't mind the charges. My fur kids get treated like royalty and they love the Doc. We were her first GSPs although she was very familiar with the breed. |

Just like Ace I just love my Vet too She has been our Vet for 20 years. When I first starting going to her clinic which was in her home, her prices were too low. Now I think she is charging what she should and may be still too low. I am very happy with the service and care of all our pets thur the years she has given us. And if it was not for my Vets good reference she gave about me to the GSP Recue WI, I would not hvae been able to adopt Rocky |

| I am not complaining, just wondering! I don't care how much it cost when my babies are sick or hurt! We only have a part-time vet unless we drive over 80 miles. I am not that fond of the part-time one, even though he is a GSP owner. I think I will just start driving far! |

| Pixie...no not starving, but not living like a MD does. Lyme vac. does not cause the disease. Dog probl. had it before it was vacc. unless it was tested prior to vacc. Also if Lyme vac. is not boosterd at precise times, there is vacc. failure. good for you no heartworm, but dont try that living near the eastern shore of Maryland ect. Most vets are changing their vacc. protocol, and are willing to do titers as well. Rabies vac. is the law in most states. Most vets dont mind working with reputable breeders who are up front about what they want to do as far as vaccines etc. Its the "others" that give breeders a bad rep with vets. All you folks who love your vet..let he or she know it..believe me..when our clients give us a thank you card, bring us cookies etc. we are thrilled. There are clients who are "A" clients...thats just the way it is. They get worked in no matter how busy, because they pay their bills on time, are educated on when to treat or not, dont complain about every penny on their bill, and dont take the vet for granted. Im sure its the same in alot of clinics..it has been in every one I have been in over the past 35 years, and on the other hand..we have the PIAs...the pain in the a.....s. They call on Frid. afternoon after watching a sick dog all week and when you look for the records they are upstairs in either the bad debt file, the inactive file as we have not seen them in 6 years.......oh the stories we can tell. So if you love your vet and their staff..for petes sake let them know it!!!! There is also the matter of geography as to price...if you live in NYC...everything is higher there, just like Calif. I used to work in MD in a affluent area of Drs. Lawyers, baseball players etc..the prices at that clinic reflected the area. Now I am in a rural area where most of our clients are farmers, factory workers...our prices are way lower than what the MD prices were due to the economics of our area. Its like that all over..so you are going to see the higher end of things because where you live is expensive!!! |

Gsplvr, I don't think anyone here was "bashing" their vets. Most folks feel very strongly about their vets. The thread appears to be a way to assess what people are paying for comparison's sake, realizing geographic areas will vary. While most of us would probably never switch vets just over a few dollars difference, it may be useful for new folks on the board to have some idea of what things cost and do some comparison shopping prior to selecting a vet clinic. With the high cost of fuel and groceries many folks are re-assessing lots of other expenses in their lives. Businesses that cannot be competitive will be driven out regardless of how much they have tied up in their buildings and equipment. Our community just held a Rabies clinic with shots for $10. Unfortunately, we got ours in September when we adopted our dog so I doubt we'll be able to take advantage of the April clinics. Our vet charged $22.50 for the Rabies shot. Anyone can do the math and see that there are savings to be had across the board. I agree that in order to receive good service from any business, it pays to be a good customer first and foremost. You are right in suggesting that folks don't call their vets at the 11th hour for problems that have been brewing long-term. Interesting thread. |

Geographics play a big part in costs, as well as comfort level with the relationship and care when it comes to the charges. In PA, the eastern vets charge more than the western part of the state. We have a volunteer on the PA/NJ border that uses a NJ vet whose charges are very high.
