Hopefully I'll dredge up a bit more from pics that are trickling in from folks that had cameras and maybe one or two more off mine from Saturday... I saw a LOT of flashes going off on Sunday when it was just Rogan and I out there so my fingers are crossed!
Heading into a hard left turn here at a pretty good clip. Note crash gear! Gotta take these hounds seriously, they are POWERFUL and FAST.

| MegC, Thanks. Please direct me to more details of this insanity! I can see Old Chip would've been a relentless musher. Guess Kal's obsession to run could be harnessed as well, although he does not strain on his collar like Chip did. Used to do a lot of rock climbing when I had Auzzie. He'd pull me up & down hill. |

Your one-stop-shop for scooter insanity: dogscooter.com. That would be run by Daphne, who is out of Seattle, and who really kicked the scooter thing down the road a number of years ago.
Los Tres Horribles have had their picture in a few editions of her book 'my dog likes to run, I like to ride' |

I'm still waiting for more photos to show up from other folks... they're trying to get the club webmaster to gather them all in one spot, which would be cool since I've got great shots of some other teams.
In the meantime, I bring you "Dulcie in sleeping bag after event". Besdes her shortened solo 'victory lap' , she was the rabbit for a couple other dogs learning the scootering- thing to chase on Sunday.

Yay, more pics! I think the other one I already posted was the best, but these show how hard Rogie was working for me solo on Saturday. Good boy, big buddy. " src="/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/blue/emoticons/smile.gif" />

Thats awesome. If you had to slam on the breaks how would the scooter take that? Would it flip over or stay on the ground? Is it even safer then biking with a dog? |

Imo it's safer than a bike because you can bail out the side much easier- no top tube to kick a leg over, just step off. Either way you have to lean WAY back during fast stops. |

| That looks like fun and a little bit safer then using a bike. I was always worried that I would run them over or they would do a fast stop in front of my bike. Of course I had one of those mens touring bikes that with a quick stop you had a bar positioned in the wrong place. Ouch |

There's a couple things you can also do to prevent 'sudden stoppage accidents', including 'rope suck' where the line ends up suddenly jammed in the front fork with a tendancy to toss the driver off over the handlebars into the dogs....
- run a bit to one side or the other of the dog
- modulate speed carefully to keep tension in the line, especially with dogs starting out
- use a LONG section of bungie to help suck up slack and bumps. I think mine is 4' long compressed and 6' long stretched.
Rogan can take the scooter over 20mph by himself for bursts. I'm more likely to have a 'sudden meaty detour' incident (think squirrels or bunnies or cats) than 'sudden stoppage' incident with him. |

Fascinating! Thanks MegC. At 1st I thought you were on a Mt. Bike, something I used to try, until it started feeling like Russian Roulette. Of course no helmet, gloves, knee or elbow protection back in the day. Had a hard time getting my head around the $1600 cart on the link. Poor Kal would have a hard time getting his head around pulling my 225 lb. A 'scooter' definitely looks lots safer than the Mt. Bike. Have you ever seen a small fat tire, low performance, 'scooter' suitable for beach use? I bet Kal would love to drag my butt at the beach. The beach would be like the open dog park & Kal would want to run, if I can keep him out of the surf. May need to build something. Any of the forest trails I walk Kal on are distractions every yard & narrow, twisted, not built for speed. |

You could try a scooter like that, but beach riding is definately slow hard pulling. My uncle ran on the Oregon dunes through about 3 decades and he preferred using a 4 wheeled cart with ATV wheels to prevent 'sinkage'. Of course he had 3-4 dogs minimum hooked up.
If you post on the dogslovetorun and/or SEmushers yahoo group you will probably scare up some scooter folks in Florida that could help you out if you're interested in giving it a whirl. |

That's why I included "low performance" since speed & distance are not my priority. We also have some packed, fine sand, beaches around low tide & a few beaches that allow driving-quite different than typical "dunes" situations. I definitely like the scooter idea & can see a niche for a light weight, fat tire beach design. Also abandoned mushing w/inline skates, my most recent attempt. Chip could pull me all too well, the combination of high speed on hard, unforgiving surfaces & tripping over the flat nylon strap quickly added up to Russian Roulette. Tried it a few times, sans safety gear & Chip was exceptionally motivated. The coup degras was finding out our wonderful Rails-to-Trails prohibits dogs, the hard way! My age & agility didn't exactly contribute a Gold Medal performance either. Good thing I got tossed off before investing in Road Rash protection. Abraded the butt of 1 hand preventing my teeth from colliding w/pavement. Hills are also not an issue here, but sand is. I'm pretty much faced w/hard surfaces or sand. All of FL is essentially a beach. Any scooter would benefit by being soft sand capable here. I was thinking along the lines of special, high flotation tires that are wider than they are tall. May need to design a lightweight, low corrosion beach scooter of my own, if the mushers haven't already. Thanks for the links, will be looking at them soon, surely others have tried. Still don't have a bead on how far Kal might mush, running free he's like the Energizer Bunny. Not prepared for a team. Need to go back & look into the harness & standoff. |

Hee... my one and only attempt at roller-joring resulted in destroying a nearly new set of jeans and feeling pretty lucky that my butt wasn't more torn up than it was. I'll stick with the scooter! |

| I can't even manage to stay upright on my own in roller blades & I have the enormous road rash scars on my legs to prove it, so the thought of roller-joring with my two speed demons...eeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkk!!! |

These are reasons why an open sand beach or grassy field, high flotation tires & low speed has an appeal. I recall using the brakes on my Mt. Bike a lot to hold the dog's speed down, of course that was on narrower, hilly trails where falls could mean hospitalization. The idea of hopping off a scooter running in an emergency is a major plus. Curious how to train the dog to go where you want. I understand how natural it is on a trail, but think Kal would want to run circles in the open. |

Running in open fields et al is sort of 'graduate work'. You definately want to start with running on clearly defined paths or roads and working from there. |

I'd expect to try Kal out at home where he's used to walking the 1/2 mile driveway & lane to my mailbox & the mile long limerock road I live off of. Thinking of cutting up a cheap beater mt. bike & fabricating a scooter. Been asking folks at the dog park if they were familiar w/dog scooter mushing, only a couple w/3 huskies had. So far I've gotten no replies to inquiries about high flotation 'sand' tires. Was also surprised not to see any scooters w/seats. Can I presume standing is a constant requirement to maintain balance? Also haven't found the 'standoff' I've seen. Do not recall the right key word or brand name. I'm talking about the spring loaded rods that attach tug line to the bike stem, so as to keep the rope away from front wheel. The 1 I saw would flop L or R whenever slack. Only saw a skeletal guard that fits over front tire. What I did find in abundance was the buzzsaw of controversy. Pretty sad how any interest is politicized. The PETA extremists are so joyous to publicize mushing as dog abuse, exaggerating tired overworked dogs' hearts exploding, mushers whipping their heat exhausted dogs & running them w/bleeding pads, etc. These are the same people who determined I was unfit to own a dog b/c I lack a fenced yard & are behind tethering laws. I'm sure they'd condemn how much Kal ran tonight, preferring that dogs stay safely in crates no doubt? |

| We had a brush with the PETA people here locally... a Prairie dog community was to be bulldozed because the city felt like we needed another baseball field.. so all the PD's were going to be put down, it was deemed to be the most humane thing especially since Kansas was having issues of Prairie Dog communities becoming Plague carriers... The PETA team came in and gathered all the animals and moved them to an abandoned community in Colorado, where they were promptly all devoured and shredded to pieces by badgers. apparently that was more humane than putting them gently to sleep? These people forget how violent the natural world really is. They want to inflict human standards on all species. |
