Hello all! Well Hannah had an interesting trip to the vet yesterday. She went in for her annual check-up and yearly vaccination. She had  a rash on her tummy that the vet diagnosed as a simple Staph infection. She had no temp. and was as active as ever so the vet prescribed Cephalexin and said it would be fine. I know this type of infection is caused by the Staph. bacteria (I had a severe staph. infection as a child) and am wondering where Hannah may have come in contact with the bacteria? I feel like the world's worst owner  Has anyone delt with Staph. or have advice? Anything is appreciated.

I have a friend who just had the exact same situation -- red rash on their dog's stomach = staph. The vet said the humid weather they live in can jsut create a nice environment for it. her dog had been swimming a lot too he said the heat, moisture etc and a little scratch from anything could have created the right conditions. She felt badly too but he assured her it wasn't a big deal OR her fault.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the advice.
kmoalbany, it has been 90+ degrees here lately and humid so I HAD been taking Hannah swimming everyday. To make matters worse, I was distracted leaving the vet office and bumped into the car parked behind me! Arrgggg!

I remember reading once where everyone carries the germs on their skin. It is an opportunistic organism that gains a foothold when conditions are ripe or there is a cut or abrasion on the skin. It really has nothing to do with being a "bad owner" unless you really have horrible conditions. It just happens.

Staph is Staphylococcus.  It's not a specific bacteria it's whole Genus.  There are thousands of different species most of which are totally harmless.

Staph aureus is one that is a common skin bacteria that is normally present, get a few scrapes and it starts to cause a problem.

Bacteria are just part of life.  Summer conditions especially when it's wet just cause them to bloom. CR

There's a reason I like dogs better'n people... .

Your not a bad owner...sometimes these things happen and we don't have any control over it . I am glad Hannah is doing well now.

Thank you to everyone who offered advice and support. It was very reassuring. Hannah's "rash" has completely cleared up and is down to the last couple weeks of the antibiotic. She still fights me tooth and nail about the antibiotics 3 times a day and isn't doing to well at the "resting quietly while recovering" bit . I had my doubts about the vet when she said take her home and have her rest quietly while shes on the meds. Shorthair....rest.....quietly? Hmmm.... LOL
