I just wanted to share our exciting day with all of you. Blaze & I decided last minute to actually go for a hunt title so we set out this past Sat for our 1st attempt ever. Neither her nor I have ANY hunt training. Well, I like to deer hunt but there is a huge difference there & no dogs allowed. Anyway, we went out & she did it again! Blaze got her 1st Jr leg out of the way! She also passed with a very high score, especially for a 1st timer. Now we just have to get the other 3 legs so she'll have her Jr hunter title.  Who says a pretty dog can't hunt or a show dog can't hunt or an older dog can't hunt? Huh! I can prove different! Blaze will be 5 yrs old in Aug & has never had any training on birds! She's seen them & knew what they were, but no formal training of any kind. At this time I have no pictures to offer because I was out with her & it's kind of hard to try to take a picture when your in the middle of a hunt test. Maybe I can get a pic during the next test if someone has a camera out there.

Obviously (although contrary to Dr. Phil) that dog will hunt. Congratulations to both of you.

Thanks for the congrats. We are going out to try it again this weekend. The normal photographer has some personal family problems so won't be there, but I was told there might be someone out there who will be taking pictures. If I can, I will be getting some.

Well, we did our 2nd hunt test today. The weather was much nicer. The day was long! And.... we passed!!!!!  That means we now have 2 legs towards our junior hunter title. Hopefully she passes again on the next 2 tests too so I don't have to spend more money that I really don't have. These hunt tests cost way more then a confirmation show! I need more work to afford this stuff! I don't smoke drink or do any kind of drugs so I guess this is my "bad habbit".

Hello Phyllis

Hope all is well in your part of the world... things are going along just fine here in Michigan....  Just celebrated our 14th. anniv. in rescue  Can you imagine almost 300 dogs have gone through our home... and trust me it looks it

Working on a couple dogs for masters and have one of them the handler thinks could become a Dual so got a lot of exciting things going on here.... Just need about 4 more jobs to pay for it all    But most importantly we are enjoying our life with some pretty awesome dogs  Hugs Ruthann

Ruthann,
You'll be seeing a lot more of us too, because I'm titling at least 3 of my dogs as I can afford to. It's VERY difficult to pay for this stuff when you're broke! Maybe you'll see us at the next 2 hunt tests too, if we can get our entries in.

How much does it cost to run through a hunt test? Is this the test against other dogs or against the Standard?

Bill,
The field trials are against other dogs & they are also expensive. The hunt tests run around $40 per test & your dog has to pass 4 to become a junior hunter. The hunt test is more to see if your dog can do what it was bred to do. It doesn't compete with other dogs, but will run with another dog. No matter what the other dog does your dog is being judged in their ability. I hope this helps.

Ruthann, it wasn't a question of knowing any of my dogs could do what they are supposed. I already knew they could. I just didn't have the money for any of the titles. I am a single parent with only 1 income (barely even that) & can't afford to pay for all of the titles & things I want to put on my dogs. It especially gets hard when economy is down & I have more then 1 dog to work on titling for so many events. I only decided to stretch my $$ for this now because Blaze is going to be 5 yrs old soon, so I thought I'd better get it done. One of my other goals is to title Blaze in everything I can, not just for me but to make Eve proud. She is a wonderful breeder & has helped me out with learning many things throughout the years so I want to give back to her by showing how much I do with the great girl she blessed me with. At this point I'm not even sure if I can afford the next 2 tests coming up, but am sure trying. I really want to go & get this done.

Well actually Bill when you get into the Senior and Master hunt tests the dogs you are running with are a very important part of the test....
In Senior or Masters if the other dog runs in and steals your point, busts your bird, or can't find a bird and doesn't go on point for your dog to back you could loose your chance for a leg that day.... You could also loose your chance for a leg with handling errors.Or if the gunner misses the birds and you have nothing for your dog to retrieve you are out of luck as well.... It's a game of skill and chance...
Junior Hunt Test is basically basic instinct.... it is a good way to introduce your dog and yourself to this wonderful sport... A lot of the seasoned hunt test people won't even run a junior they feel it is not important... It is all in how you look at things... We like to run juniors just to see the strength of their natural ability.... Ruthann
