I am VERY proud to announce that Morrison passed his CGC test the other day! Around here, that means he'll be allowed into more places and opens up some future options for him. He did really well during the test but I think he got away with some stuff because he is just so sweet to everyone!

| good job. we tried that once, was doing great until the lay down part. i never even taught her that! my fault, so we didn't get it. we'll try again. you can look at that face and see he is a good citizen. |

its a test done at different seminars or shows. its under the akc events. really it only takes about 9 minutes or so, and 3 of those you arent even there for.
it shows your dog can:
sit
come
greet a stranger
greet a strange dog
lay down
handle a startling noise
be petted
handle the dog's feet
be left with a stranger, with you out of sight
i think there are 11tasks all together. basic stuff to prove that you have trained your dog for basic commands and to be social. its a really good starter event, something to build on. that said, i still dont have it. look under events on the akc.org site |

The hardest part for my dogs has always been the "sitting quietly for patting from a friendly stranger" part of the CGC or CGN as it's called in Canada. The obedience school we train at offers the CGN (Canine Good Neighbour) as a part of one of their courses. You work on the different elements as a small part of your class each week.On the week 8,the testis held.

| Rocky passed his CGC with alot of practice with and without treats. The CGC is all done without treats. That was the hardest part. Getting Rocky to go down without a treat in my hand. The person I had to leave him with, Rocky rested his head on her lap, she couldn't help but pet him. In the crowd part, Rocky sniffed out the one person who had treats in his pocket!! They were amazed. The grooming brushing station, they said Rocky looked well groomed, no tangles in his fur!!! I did give Rocky a special treat after the test was all over. Specail congratulations to Morrison you did it and should be very proud!! When you get the document from the AKC, frame it and place it with honor on your wall!!! |

I almost took Ranger in for this test a couple weeks ago. The trainer we went to for obedience does the testing. I know that Ranger can act aggressive towards older men with hats and/beards as well as men in general if they approach us as we're walking. He may bark and lunge at them so I am always on guard in those situations. Since we got him from a shelter after he came in as a stray, the background is unknown. My imagination tells me maybe he was mistreated by an older guy? Although he shows no nervousness or fear in other situations. Who knows?
At any rate, my feeling was that even if he passed this test at the training center, I still know my dog. I don't trust him 100% just yet with all strangers. He's protective when folks come to the door and with this "Old guy with hat" situation, I feel I'd be misrepresenting my dog to say he's an official Canine Good Citizen. (Of course he's Citizen Number ONE in our house!).
With my husband in the insurance industry we are always thinking of "Liabilities". I don't think I'd take on the liability of taking Ranger to nursing homes, hospitals, schools, etc. even with a Canine Good Citizen badge. He is still rather new to us (got him in September) so I think time will also tell.
I hope I'm not the only one out here with a Canine "Fairly Good Most of the Time" Citizen??  |

| Oh ya ... Bo is really good when he wants to be. Yesterday as my husband was coming home from work I yelled out at him to get the mail ... who goes zipping out? And then proceeds to ignore our "come" commands? That he's been doing really well with when we practice in the park. He was flying around the neighbourhood, finally coming to rest beside my husband 'cuz he had to poop. We are a LONG way off from a good citizen. |

Everbell - I got a good laugh from your description of Bo "escaping" to run around your neighborhood, even though I know from experience it's not really something to laugh at. Hans and I are in week seven of basic obedience, specifically to work on the reliable recall. Last Halloween the pizza guy left the door open a tad too long and Hans made his escape. I lost him as he ran across a very busy street and it was a half hour before I finally cornered him. I have to say, though, that he's doing much better - or is it I'm doing better at working with him? We plan on continuing on into the Advanced I class.
Funny thing about "down". We worked hard on the down bit and I was all ready to show what Hans could do at the next class. Well, he wouldn't do a "down" no matter what. Turns out he's willing to down on a carpeted floor, but forgetaboutit if it's concrete or rubber mat. Now we practice in the unfinished basement...
Congrats, Morrison!!! Something to consider for Hans (and me) to work towards. |
