Okay, so she's not a GSP...
My mom just brought home Abbey, a rescue of unknown breeding. The previous owner was told that Abbey's mother was a Lab/St. Bernard cross and the father was a Mastiff. I just don't see it--not to mention that there sure aren't a whole lot of Mastiff's cruising around the Twin Cities. Just doesn't seem very likely for an accidental breeding.
Take a look and let me know what you think. I definitely see the Lab, and I'm also guessing Australian Shephard. ???

Many people make the jstake of mixing up the Bernese Mtn Dog with the Aussie because of the makings. She is WAY too small to have any Berner in her. She sure is cute though. I currently own a Bernese Mtn Dog & have been in the breed for almost 9 yrs now. Anyway, I used to have a dog with the same hair & markings as yours & looked from the pictures to be about the same size. She was a Aussie/Flat coated retriever mix. Take a look at the 2 breeds & you will see how she could be that mix. Flat coats do come in mostly black but also in a liver/brown color. |

Believe it or not Joce, Terra is actually at the top of the breed standard for females. She's 23" tall and 52 lbs. I was going to say Aussie and Rottie or doberman. Gail |

I was excited today when I took Tundra to the vet and she is now a wopping 35 pounds. YIPEEE! Maybe I will get that 1/2 inch out of her I am looking for yet. I was told her lines tend to be late bloomers. We will see!
PS. now that rebecca mentions it I could see Aussie in there. Very possible! |

As I've not only been in the breed of Bernese Mtn dogs for around 9 yrs & still currently own 1, I do know the standard of them. The small ones are NOT in standard. Here it is.. Bernese Mountain Dog Standard...Size, Proportion, Substance Measured at the withers, dogs are 25 to 27½ inches; bitches are 23 to 26 inches. Though appearing square, Bernese Mountain Dogs are slightly longer in body than they are tall. Sturdy bone is of great importance. The body is full. I've also shown Aussies for about 7 yrs now & have read & studied most all of the breed standards in both AKC & UKC due to judging in fun matches, non licensed puppy, etc & in the process of hopefully getting my judging license. I surely can't remember all there is in every standard but do know certain ones quite well. One of the things that the Heart Of MI Bernese Mtn Dog club has a huge issue with in the breed is the back yard breeders or mass producers who are breeding them way below standard so people who live in apartments can have them. It's no different than the puppy mills, back yard breeders & mass producers who breed GSPs way below standard just to make a buck. Most of these "small" dogs have several health issues, as do the "designer" dogs. In no way am I trying to say I know everything there is about every breed, but I do my homework & have been for several yrs. I was simply letting Prairiefire know what breed my dog was that looked exactly like the 1 in the picture, nothing else. |

My husband's uncle has a few red Aussies. Until then, I had never seen that color variation before. Here's a picture of one (not his!):

Not that the breeding really matters, but I thought I'd check and see what you all thought... If nothing else, it's a fun guessing game.
The woman at the rescue suggested Abbey might be part Border Collie, but I'd think Aussie would be more likely given the coloring. A number of people have suggested Rottie/Dob as well...
I'll meet Abbey this Wednesday. My mom said that she's very calm, gentle and quiet. Needs a bit of work on obedience, but is essentially a loveable cuddlebug. She never even made it up onto their website.

| When I first saw her I thought Bernese too. She lies down like my son's Newfie. The head is definitely too small for Mastiff. Love the Colorado sweatshirt. |

Yeah--I have no idea where they got Mastiff from. They're a pretty distinct looking breed.
Both of my sisters graduated from CU. Those sweatshirts used to be the annual Christmas gift! They both live in Lafayette now. Westminster sounds really familar--is that close by? |

Oh, you're just up the road then!
My sister Maureen graduated in 99. Kate was in 03, I believe. Unbelievable campus. My sister Maureen used to take her lab rescue to class with her. Apparently, lots of students did. I would have loved to have had a dog in college, but dogs weren't allowed in the campus buildings at the University of Wisconsin, and that's just too long to be locked up in a small college apartment... |

| A lot of the places that I audited in Boulder let their employees bring their dogs to work. I used to carry dog biscuits in my purse to appease the pups. One place had a large pointer who took to shoving my purse all over the office trying to get the biscuits. |

I agree it is an Aussie mix. I had a red female Aussie and the markings are very similar. Also, Border Collies come in red too. So it is very likely that she could be half and half. Some people cross the breeds intentionally. I have a Border Collie and the hair coat is very similar. We use Border Collies on sheep and have had several in the past. They are great dogs. I'm not as fond of Aussies though. She is cute as a button though. Maybe she will start trying to herd something and that will give you a clue. My Border Collie use to herd my little cousins back in her younger days. |
