Molly had x-rays today and the vet has diagnosed her with osteochondritis dissecans.  He put her on Dasuquin but if that does not work we are looking at $2000 for artheroscopic surgery.  He said it is genetic (don't know if in dogs in general or shorthairs in particular).  Has anyone else had problems with this and what was the outcome.  If necessary, we will definitely do the surgery.  Damn these furkids are expensive.

I'm guessing that Molly is somewhere around 8-10 months old?
OCD, as it is known, has a genetic component in that Large Breed Dogs are prone to the risk. There is also environmental components caused by feeding of High Protein/High Ash Adult Formula foods to pups, overweight pup, hard impact exercise on concrete or jumping down off of tailgates, decks,etc...
Usually, OCD tends to be bi-lateral and if it affects one elbow, will eventually affect the other elbow as well. In effect, it is a piece of cartilege flap that has slipped and wedges between the elbow joints causing pressure. Rather than go into great detail, just do a Google of "OCD in Dogs" for a wealth of information.

Molly just turned 5 yearrs old. She got her right shoulder gashed by an icicle two years ago that needed stitches but had not seemed to be having any trouble with it until about two weeks ago. She does run across the redwood deck but is seldom on concrete. We have had 3 GSPs over 30+ years and had never run into this. According to the vet she is not overweight but is a relatively small GSP. I'll check the Google. Thanks.

5 years old??? That doesn't sound typical of OCD....... OCD seems to typically manifest around that magic 10 month age. I could be wrong, but that doesn't sound right.

I agree.  After reading about it on Google I think I'll talk more about it with my vet.  Thank you for the information.  We don't hunt or show Molly but she is a valued family member and we don't want her in pain.
