Well it looks to me like a case localized demodex. She looks young, which would make sense. Get your vet to to do a skin scraping to be sure. If its just the localized area, its usually due to the pups immune system being stressed by growing/parasites/being in heat for the first time etc. It will 9 times out of 10 resolve on its own with out dips, ointments ect. If she developes several other areas , you may want to use ointment or dipping with Mitaban. You can also use a Preventic collar..it contains Amitraz, the same insecticide that is in Mitaban dip. Lots easier to do and works all the time. |

| Will this be something that we struggle with with her for the rest of her life if she has this? She is only 8 months old and just started seeing this in the past few weeks. Thanks! |

"If" it is just the localized form of demodex..they get some patchy areas of hair loss typically around the eyes and other areas of the face, sometimes a patch here and there on a leg or other area of the body. If it is..then with supportive care and sometimes nothing at all...they just kick their immune system back in gear and its gone. You just have to be careful that the dog is healthy as in no intestinal parasites, good diet etc. She probl. just had her first heat cycle i would bet..that means stress to the dog. The biggest thing is..that it does not progress to the generalized form..that is a very serious skin disease. Watch her carefully, but do take her to your vet for a simple skin scraping to make the correct diagnosis. I can guess this way as I have worked in the vet. field for 35 years, had bred dogs for as many, but with skin diseases, you always want to make sure that is what is going on. Her history, age, and picture are "typical" looking of demodex. She will outgrow it in a few weeks. Good luck and let me know how she makes out.  |

I had a similar case with my female. It was after she got sick and went to the emergency vet office and they couldn't find put what was wrong. Anyway she got better in a couple of days. About 2 months later the demodex showed up. This is part my theory and part from the vet. I think it may happen more than people think, but on caring shorthair folks and their coats being short and dark it is found more often. That is my theory. My vet said that demodex is always on dogs and that you could do a skin scape and find the mites on every dog. Dogs just have these mites. When its immune system is weakened by heat, stress, or a medical problem they the mites get the upper hand and that is when you see hair loss. My female had small patches on the face and some on her front legs. The vet gave me ivomec solution to put on the spots. It cleared up after a while and has not returned in 2 years, several heat cycles, a litter of pups, and lots of hard hunting.
I am guessing it clear up on its own. Just watch it which I am sure you will do. I looked online an never read anything thta wasn't contridicted someplace else. I bought some NEEM shampoo which is a natural insecticide. I don't know if it worked, but it sure makes her coat nice and doesn't seem to dry her skin out like other shampoos.

I too saw this with my female when she was about 8 months old. The spot was on her side near where her front leg joined her chest. My vet gave me some ointments to use and it cleared up pretty quickly (although it took awhile for the hair to come back). The vet said the same thing as Matt, that the mites are always present and something occurs to let them have the upper hand (scraps, allergy, sickness). Anyway, my girl hasn't had any more problems and she is now 2 1/2 years old.

Referring to your second picture, is this as bad as it got? Are there more spots and/or is that all of what you saw over the past few weeks?
If that's it, and no scabs or dry skin, is she rubbing that area against something? It looks identical to what my 6yo gets near the outer corners of her eyes. That's from laying on the mat I have down for her outside. Their hair is thin around the eyes. Demodectic mange usually causes the skin to become red and scaly. |

| That is as worse at has gotten. She does have a small spot similar to this on her back near her spine on the opposite side of the body. This one has cleared up fatser than the other one. I was hopeing to show her in September but am afraid this may factor in how the judge looks at her as well. I know she still looks good but I think the judge will look over her due to the eye and it being on that side of her body....Maybe I can get it to clear up and grow back by then! |

| Try supplementing with some fish oil. Last summer one of my boys had AWFUL skin problems and I've had him on Derm Caps ES for a year now and he looks great. I just started my girls on the Grizzly Salmon Oil, but it's too soon to post any results yet. They spend half the day in kennel runs which I think is very hard on their coats. |

| Looks like localized dermodex to me too. I've had a lot of foster puppies with this. The stress of being in a shelter, crappy food etc in their cases it can be a bit of a struggle to clear up but even with them some goodwin oil rubbed on the areas along with good food, rest etc and they bounce right back. And they are no where near as healthy as your girl. I think we've only had ONE dog in allt he time that went on to truly struggle with dermodex and his wasn't localized, he is still a mystery to the vet. |

Yeah I would appreciate the symptom discription too as when I look up the topic on the internet the pictures I see don't look much like her hair loss..... Where can I get those fish oil caplets? I don't know if her coat could get much softer or shinnier either though. She literly sparkles in the sun! |

With mine the the symptoms were:
- hair lose in a localized area
- some slight redness, and irritation (but I think that was due to her scratching at the area)
- itchy
Looked almost like a skin allergy. I didn't know what it was until the vet checked. I just new it wasn't normal and it never really seemed like it was clearing up. It would get better, but then would come back. By the way, the rest of the coat on my girl was beautiful and glossy. I feed both of mine Wellness lamb or venison in both canned and kibble. I asked the vet about supplements and she said their diet was really good, but if I wanted to supplement it wouldn't hurt. I chose not to as they are both very health and have really beautiful coats.
After treatments the problem went away and hasn't come back. |

| Her's isnt itchy at all, nor red or scaby at all. Just like her hair has fallen out for some reason there. We will see what we find out. |

Something else that might help as a supplement is a Cod Liver Oil by Nordic Naturals. It is odor free and may be easier to give than a tablet since you can just put a little on her food. It may be a little pricey though. I think the 8 oz bottle that I have cost about $20. I think the site is www.nordicnaturals.com. I was looking for supplements for Jake's dry skin (under his shiny coat) and this was recommended from a local mom & pop store. |

| He only needs 1/2 teaspoon a day but I can't seem to remember to give it to him every day. It appears to have worked but I need to be better at giving it to him consistently. I still have my original bottle but I would imagine it should last a month at that small of a dosage. I think the reason I can't remember to give it to him is because it is in the fridge now that it is open. |

| Thanks Matt. Tundra's skin isn't dry in any way though even where the spots are. So I am not sure what to think. I just go an email from another GSP lady that is having the same problem with her female dog. She said she wil probably get her into the vet this week as well. I will see what they say. |

I buy all my supplements from www.drsfostersmith.com. They have a website where you can research the fatty acid supplements if you feel she would benefit from it - www.peteducation.com - and select what you feel suits your needs.
Your vet should be the one to diagnose any problem. *My opinion*, given your pictures and description, is that she's rubbing against something causing the little bit of hair loss. |
