Gail I think that breaks it down a lot better. It gets confusing for me b/c what works in one breed doesn't work in another. Also some stuff that seems logical doesn't work. Thanks for clearing it up. :)

" Gail, what about the white paw/ chest marks on the solids? I have seen solids without the white patch have solids with it? I like it but is that just an odd thing that shows up?"

The way it was explained to me was that a completely solid liver dog is homozygous for solid (bbSS), and a solid liver dog with a blaze on its chest or white patches on its feet is heterozygous for solid (bbSs).

Gail,
Thanks for the clarification.
I have read so many articles on color and it just boggles the mind sometimes.

It is something worth knowing,as in the case of the litter in question. It is so important to use reputable breeders, otherwise it's just an expensive pound puppy.

Francine,

Do you have Georgina Byrne's book, Der Deutsch Kurzhaar? It's an excellent reference tool for everything GSP, history, genetics, health, etc.

prairiefire,

I don't think that's always the case. My Terra is heterzygous solid liver, BbSs. She has 2 white hairs on her chest and that's all. All of her solid littermates had more white. One brother had knee sox in front and a huge chest patch.

I'm not so up on the inheritance of white as it pertains to solids. The markings on a tickeddog and white on a solid have to do with the same "S" gene. I found this from the same book,

7. Gene locus “S” (spotting…i.e. patching):

There are four alleles at the “S” locus. These are:

S Self (solid) coloured. Small amounts of white on chest, toes, and/or tail-tip can be present.

si “Irish” spotting. White markings on the extremities, i.e. legs, neck, tail. This pattern is commonly seen in such breeds as the Basenji and the Boxer.

sp Piebald spotting. Patches of solid colour on the head and body, as in the Pointer and most spaniel breeds.

sw Extreme-white piebald. Solid colour is present only on the head and/or the base of the tail.

The letters i, p and w should appear small and to the top right of the "s" but they didn't copy that way.

I do have her book.
It's not her book that confuses me,tho.
It's articles like this:

This site is a good read for people who have nothing else to do. LOL.

No kidding! I didn't read the whole article but it looks like a course on genetics. I've taken one many years ago in university and it can get complicated....

And this is why I will leave breeding to the experts! My brain hurts!

But it is good to be familiar with this for anyone looking at purebred dogs. It's a tricky world out there ... and there always seems to be one more way to make a fast buck!
