I've looked at some photos of a new litter of pups for sale. This breeder hit it big. Male and female of solid black, solid liver, black and white, liver and white (ticked) and what I would call a solid brown or fawn. Has any one ever seen this color on a GSP. I am no expert, but I haven't heard of the color. With the breeder's permission I will post a photo. I'll be meeting her on Sunday.

Sometimes solid liver dogs are lighter or sort of washed out looking. Is that what you mean? Not all liver coloring is deep, rich and dark even in a newborn puppy.

Thanks Gail, I've just never seen one with such a light color. I'll try to get a photo posted.

When we first saw Bo at 3 weeks the main part of his coat looked grey (except for his patches. I can't believe how dark (and heavily ticked) he is now.

I'll try to get a close up of Hunter. He has the lightest liver head I have seen. Maybe that's the shade you are talking about.

Hunter is not that light though. Wow, that must be an odd one or something.

It does makes me wonder if he's more or less valuable. Not that it makes a difference in my choosing the pup, but made me curious. Like I've said I'm not an expert, but even in what I've read I haven't heard of one described with this color. Who knows maybe it is the camera angle or flash??? I'll find out for sure tomorrow. I'm going to meet the litter and I get 2nd pick. I'm sure I'll start another thread when I get back home. I am really excited about this. We are bringing Tory along to meet the breeder, too. He'll have to stay in the truck while we're checking out the pups though.

Bedberg,

I prefer a rich, dark liver color but that's me. If a puppy had all the qualities that you were looking for but was a more "washed" out liver color, I wouldn't dismiss them.

I also was drawn to the dark liver color....  Jackson came from a litter that had about half liver/white ticked and half solid liver or solid with a few hints of white.  Jackson was the darkest out of the solid livers (almost black he was so dark...(espresso I called him), but the lighter ones were still pretty dark...not even close to the shade of the pup there.   how exciting to be going for your pup!!  I agree go with the pup that grabs you!  I probably would have wound up picking Jackson no matter what color he was because of his personality and his funny white paw! You better post lots of pictures!!!

I'm actually going for one of the solid livers. Then I wonder if my heart will break with the thought that no one else would take that one. There is supposed to be another person there when I'm there that has 1st pick, maybe I should ooh and aaww over the brown one then he'll take him :)
I'm so nervous and excited and so many other emotions over this. I know I haven't given 100% at work this week. Good thing that me and my husband own the company. LOL

I read somewhere the German standard has a brown. Maybe that's this color? Also are you sure the sire is a gsp. There are weims that are that color I have seen. I would almost consider a dna test to be sure if that's pure gsp. Just to be safe, They can get pregnant from 2 different males.

I agree with everyone to pick the dog that ou bond with. When we picked up Bo, the runt of the litter was about half his size and seemed scared of everything. I almost wanted to pick him because I thought nobody else would. My husband set me straight when Bo was the one who was immediately affectionate with both of us.

Early January my nephew in South Dakota got a Bourbonnais Pointer, I never even heard of one but it has some light liver on it. Here are a few pictures he sent me today of Sizzles. ( His 3 year old son calls him that, but he is registered with some fancy name)

When a female is in heat she can become pregnant by more than one male dog. If she ties with more than one then it is possible for the other males to get her pregnant along with the intended male etc. Very interesting to me that this is possible but it is!

After looking at the picture more I am not really sure if the pup is really that light... I can't get the picture very big. But if it is next to a black pup that will deffinatly not help out with the color of the pup. to me it looks like the pup is next to a black.....wich will make the pup look even lighter. JMO
