Note: the following is not about the monster that starred in the film Dogma.
Well, not just poop... Hunter seems to have developed a taste for a variety of less-than-nourishing objects, including other dogs' (you know what they say about something missing in the diet) poop, rocks, leaves, sticks and stones, as well as the odd, old banana peel he might find along the beaten path. Indeed, I'm pretty sure it was one or more of these in some combination that gave him a really bad case of loose stools the night before last (2:00 AM). And believe me, there's nothing like half-sleep walking with little more than loose poop on the mind.
So I thought I'd turn to the group here to see if any of you went through the same sort of thing, and what you might have done to address it. I do carry a variety of his favorite treats when we go on walks, and though that seems to help, he tends to get his nose in some fairly strange stuff when I don't seem to be looking hard enough. He is is just learning "leaf it..." though.

Good luck with that. Our girl is a terrible poop eater. We've tried every trick in the book and the only thing that has worked is not giving her the opportunity (which means we have stopped taking her to a dog park where owners are too damn lazy to pick up after their dogs and a forest walk where people used the entrance as a toilet.) On the plus side, we don't have one of those gross moments in the spring where all of the winters surprises emerge from the snow.
And as for finding prizes in the woods, ya, leave it will be your best friend.
Maybe somebody else will have a more helpful answer. |

I'm in the same boat as everbell. My Lucy is a poop eater, and in the Wintertime, she loves to find it and throw it in the air to play with before eating. Sorry to be graphic. She is good with the "leave it", which, so far, is the only thing that does work for her.
What really scares me is the mice she tracks under the snow, and does manage to get at times. Being surrounded with woods and other homes, I'm afraid of the mice possibly having ingested Decon. I don't use it, but don't know if my neighbors do. The "leave it" command works, and thank God she doesn't seem to eat them. At least so far, as I've found a couple dead on top of the snow. :-( |

That of course does not help with other dog's poop or other animal's poop. I do know there isn't a dog in the world that doesn't like cat poop. Same thing for wild animal poop. The leave command does come in handy for those occasions. |

Thanks for the misc. advice all. I sort of figured that short of keeping Hunter on the leash or locked up in a closet, there wouldn't be much more I could do outside of continuing to work on leave it. Or perhaps carry around a spray can of the foulest (but safe) tasting substance from a gsp's perspective and treating everything within his reach with it. That would probably become prohibitively expensive though, and somewhat taxing on the nerves (mine, not his).

Mine doesn't eat poop, but she'll roll in a good mound of bear poop any time she can. Luckily I've learned her "about to roll" body language and a good "Ah-Ah" and "leave it" come in handy. Dogs are great, but sometimes gross. So are kids  We love them anyway. Handsome dog!! |

| Mine don't eat their own or each others poop... they do eat the horse and cow poop... I know we have had coyote poop and raccoon poop in the yard and Blitz rolls in that which smells disgusting! My kids probably wish the dogs did eat their own poop cuz then they wouldn't have to go out and pick it up lol!!! |

Yeah, we have coyotes and raccoons here, but I haven't see their poop in the yard (or haven't been looking hard enough for it). We do get plenty of deer, and you'd think Hunter thought their pellets look like vitamin pills.
He's also taken to anything dead that's been lying under the snow. Dead wood, dead leaves, dead remains of half eaten mice, etc. |

When I was growing up in WV, we called deer pellets "smart pills," because eating one made you smart enough to never let anyone con you into eating one again.

| Deer pellets are nature's own candy for dogs. Mine love deer pellets and they don't gross me out like poop from meat eaters. |

| I imagine that to a dog, deer pellets might come in a variety of flavors, depending on the local flora. Myself, I tend to enjoy my blueberries more when they're not pre-processed. |

I live on a 600 acre farm with cattle, horses, goats, llamas, and buffalo. My Drake's favorite meal of ALL time is buffalo poop........ I have no answers for this.... |
