 Hi guys!

This weekend has been kind of crazy for Elsie and I. On Saturday, I seen Elsie playing with something. I think it's a wood chip. I jump up and yell DROP IT! That's when I seen the pointy end of the needle sticking out of her mouth. I calmly (ha!) tell her to come, drop it, sit, do something! I try to bribe her outside. She runs around Catch Me If You Can style. Finally I catch her. And slurp. Down the hatch.

I  have no idea how she found it but she did.  All I can think is it fell out of the sewing box and she sniffed it out. It just makes me feel so horrible. Like I am this bad puppy parent, who just leaves needles laying around her house.

Needless to say we ended up at the emergency vets. Saturday, they sent us home with hopes that she would pass it. Sunday she started vomiting. I took her back to the vets. Seen the second x-ray where the pin had not moved and made the decision to keep her there and have them remove it. She stayed at the vets and I went home to find any more lingering needles. ( I found none)

Surgery went fine this morning. The vet said Elsie was ready to go and play the minute she woke up. (Go figure..) She will be able to come home tonight which is good because I miss that little turd like crazy!

Anyways, due to Elsie's craziness and her wanting to lick the wound, the vet said she is setting her up with an elizabethan collar for the next couple of weeks. I can only imagine the disaster Elsie is going to leave behind wearing that thing. I am wondering if there are any alternatives to this?  Any suggestions?

Oh, poor bubba. We've all had those "I should have known better" moments with our puppies. Thankfully you saw her do it and we're able to get treatment asap.

I've seen some people with blow up collars which are supposed to replace the cone of shame. I think with my dogs they would probably just find a sharp corner somewhere and pop it.

Good luck with her recovery!

A couple of things to try. You can take a big towel like a beach towel, fold it up until it is pretty thick, but will still go around her neck. Fasten it around her neck, the idea is like the blow up collar in that it will be too thick to allow them to lick the wound. If that doesn't work and depending on where the incision is you ca put a thirst on her and tighten it up at the waste. My problem is my dogs are all good at defeating these as well as the Elizabethan collar. I usually just end up keeping them with me and correct them when they lick. The challenge is at night. With my male when he was neutered the vet Doyle stitched him which was a life saver as he popped several of his stitches. Good luck and I am happy she is ok. And don't feel guilty as shorthairs are just so smart and they always find stuff we on't want them to find.

I know that Petsmart and Petco sell fabric ones.  These are much more comfortable for your dog and for your legs.

Binni beat the heck out of my legs when she wore the hard plastic collar.   I had bruises.  No kidding.

And she ended up tearing that hard plastic apart, which was another hazzard to her.  I will NEVER put the hard plastic style on her again.

Thanks so much for the tips! She is not a fan of the cone of shame. I will definitely try the towel trick when we get home tonight. Today we ended up putting a baby onesies on her while she was in her crate. (the collar and her don't fit in there together) It's pretty snug to her body, but loose enough the incision can breathe. It didn't seem to bother her as much as the cone did.  We shall see what happens when FIL goes over to check on her at lunch time.

And since I know you guys love pictures.. Her's Miss Elsie in all her glory..

Binni -- when we had Shiraz spayed she made her displeasure with the cone known by ramming it into my legs on a frequent basis :)

Don't you love those moments of horror we have to thier joyful oblivion for novelties?     I was gripping the table edge as I read your story.  I'm happy to hear the Vet got to it.

Guess that hollowed out frisbee is not going to be an Elizabethian alternative.     I was trying to figure out an alternative for Hanna when she got bit in December  and wasn't sucessful so I had to buy another one.  Hanna hated it. I took it off  on day three and in a short while she had almost licked open the glued wound. Couple that with letting her romp around the house  set us back another three days.

Since I had to keep her in her crate she finally got used to the collar .Its harder on us than it is on them. Those little plastic gromets fall out or breack easily. I recommend tieing  the holes not filled for additional security.

Yours looks like it may have the Velcro closures.  Don't get your  plastic cones from  (the Smart pet store ;) .They fall apart.

Haha Nope the frisbee is not alternative, just another "OMG Elsie moment".. Sometimes I feel like Elsie is reenacting scenes from the book/movie Marley and Me!!

She's still unsure about the cone, but getting better about it. I think she will be wearing it in the kennel tomorrow due to the fact she ripped the onesie off after lunch time. :-P hopefully I will have a snowday and she won't need to stay in the kennel.

Also, youguys are right about the shin thing! Oww!!
