Well guys, I'm not sure if I'm getting too far but he seems to be ok when left alone at night (only cries once or twice and that to go outside for a toilet, which is great!). However he seems to still cry and howl very loud while outside, hmm

I'm don't know what your routine is, but I'm still not sure why he is outside on his own at his age. Fence or no fence. My suggestion again would be to be out there with him. The perks of losing a few minutes of your time to go out with him far outweigh the cons of scooting him out on his own this early on...IMO.

Do you think he may just be to young to be alone at all. he is 9 1/2 weeks. He is outside for a few hours in morning and few in the afternoon with my girlfriends other dog (a Maltese x) while neither of us are home. Our routine is usallay; I walk him before work for 3/4 hour to and hour then come home at lunch and play and then at night he is walked and play with him again and can come and go in and out as he pleases. Most of the time he just follows me though and we and usually outside for the good part of it.

a few hours is too long to leave them outside alone without another dog. Sorry but a maltese is NOT a dog. You need something that can offer some back up is anything comes in the yard. 15 20 30 minutes is lots but a few hours your begging for trouble.

Best to kennel him but even then he shouldn't be left alone for more than 2-3 hours as thats all he will need a bathroom break.

People on here baby their puppies too much. They need time to build self confidence and cannot do that with someone schmoozing over them all the time. But you need to make sure they are safe while doing it.

How big of a kennel do you suggest?

Something big enough he can stand up and turn around in. You dont want anything so big he will pee in the back and sit in the front.

You will have to buy a couple kennels throughout his life.

I was going to say what Ryan posted. I don't leave my pups outside at that age even with my other GSPs. There is just too much trouble they can get into and I worry about someone stealing a puppy that young. Hunting dog puppies are easy pickings for dog thieves and we see them go missing from time to time in TX. My older dogs are harder to steal as they won't go up to strangers, but a puppy just doesn't know. Also, 9.5 months is still a baby. He will do much better in a kennel for a while, at least until he gets adjusted and builds a little confidence. As far as the other dog, size and breed don't matter much as they will form a pack. My oldest GSP grew up with a rat terrier and they did very well together. My next shorthair and my oldest was raised with a cocker. Same thing. It has nothing to do with the other dog, it is just your pups age and that he is in a new environment. By 4 or 5 months he will probably do fine outside with your other dog. He just needs some security right now to get his bearings and confidence. I know others use smaller kennels, but I use the kennel they will have when they are full grown. If they have an issue with the size I just add a box inside the kennel to cut down the size. Just be sure you get home and let him out at lunch. Kenneling during the day will also help for kenneling at night. Leave him with something like a kong stuffed with dog food or peanut butter and frozen. It will keep him busy and happy while you are gone.

Do you suggest perhaps leaving him inside in the kennel also?

Yes leave him inside while in the kennel.

The size of dog has no bearing on pack building but if someone wants to steal my puppy I would rather have my adult shorthair male behind puppy than a maltese or cocker spaniel. People think twice about coming into a yard when a 65 pound snarling shorthair hits the gate. Not so much with an ankle biter.

Ryan that is definitely true, but the point I was trying to make was for the puppy the other dog size and breed don't matter at this age especially. I just think he needs the time to grow up a little without so much pressure on him, and also not risk him getting hurt or stolen. Definitely leave him inside. He will likely sleep while you are gone and that is good because puppies need allot of sleep. Good luck!

I used to leave my adults outside on nice whether days when I worked away from home. Now I work from home so no issues at all. I also built a kennel that they could get into if we had a sudden weather change. The kennel has AC for summer, but no heat as it does not really get that cold here. Our summers on the other hand can be brutal for about 2 months. I have a 6 foot fence and put padlocks on the gates so no one can "accidentally" let them out. I worry about the kids in the neighborhood who just want to play with the dogs, and the crazies that try to cause trouble for pet owners (animal rights nuts). If you do leave your shorthair out when he gets older, make sure he is not a fence jumper. If they want to shorthairs can easily go over a 6 foot fence. My baby loves to jump and hang from the top to look over, but she has no desire to go on over thank goodness. The rest of mine have never been inclined to even jump and look over the fence.

Id be worried about hydration with a 2.5 month old puppy that doesnt pee for 8 hours.

A dog that small especially a puppy should be able to relieve its self atleast half way theought the day.

The general rule with puppies is for every month of age they can hold it for that many hours. I am sure you dont appreciate having to hold your pee all day so why make a puppy.

At nine weeks they are still being potty trained, so in addition to what Ryan just posted I make a special effort to get the babies our every 2 hours, sometimes stretching it to 3 hours. If you don't you can end up setting the potty training back. When mine are that little I usually put the crate in the kennel and attach an xpen around the crate to contain the pup. You can do the same in a wash room or mud room. I also use a litter box for the puppies to do their business in. I start my litters out at about 4 weeks by adding a litter box to the whelping/play area. I also add a crate so they start their crate training at an early age and their potty training. Dogs need very little encouragement to use a litter box either. So if you need to leave your pup for longer than a few hours you might consider setting up an crate and play/potty area for them. When they are older you can dispense with the xpen and litterbox and just leave them in the crate and eventually outside.
