Hey everyone, new to the page,

I have recently got a 7 week old pup, he is fine when he is around me. But when I put him outside or he is alone he continually cries and howls. I was just wondering whether he will grow out of this and how long it usually takes. I no he is still a baby so I'm not really too concerned at the momomen

thanks in advance

Give him some time and allot of love. Seven weeks is about a week sooner than I will let my pups go. That extra week with mom and siblings really helps them, but that said he should improve with time. When you leave him alone leave him with a tshirt that you have worn. I also get a puppy size stuffed toy that the puppy can snuggle with. Try also turning a radio on too. When he has to go out, go out with him until he gets used to his new home. Remember he is a baby and needs that level of attention. He has also been taken from his family and you are his new family.

Ut oh ! If this is your first one I hope you realized when picking him these little guy's tend to grow on you . Very intelligent & know how to play us from a very young age as people always tend to give in when pup is crying.
Lot's of luck with your new pup & enjoy the puppy part as it goes quickly !

Hi! Are you crate training him? If so, are you putting a towel or blanket over crate? That helps tremendously. My pup is 16 weeks old and did cry when we left the room at first but has gotten over that. He still doesn't like to be outside by himself for very long.

Just stick by his side until he starts venturing around on his own and slowly exclude yourself from his outdoor time as he gets more confident in his new turf. Eventually, he will be having so much fun that you can just walk back inside and he won't get anxious anymore.

I went outside with my boy up until 4 months old, which is around the age he started showing signs of maturity.

Now at 6 months he does his job, runs around for 10-15 minutes and then comes back to the door and calls me to let him in. He will learn bladder control before you know it, and get into his own little routine.

I crate trained him by putting him inside the kennel when he was really tired or already sleeping and he would wake up in there realizing it's more of a relaxing zone than a punishment zone. It really did help.

7 weeks, just a wee baby! ;) I personally believe dogs are instinctually pack animals so the initial learning to be alone at times is the most difficult in the wee puppy stages. Now, don't get me wrong...mine is a year and a half and can still be whiney and over dramatic if she wants to cuddle or I'm home and I'm somewhere other than where she would like me ;) give him time he will learn to trust that you always reappear and come back. Also, at 7 weeks I would suggest going out with him and not sending him outside on his own. Being with him while he explores his big scary and interesting world will not only help him gain confidence faster, but build the trust bond with you. Congrats on your pup!!

Now is the time to train them howling will NOT get them attention. Let puppy howl dont even scold him. When he stops then go to him. He needs to learn being quiet is what will get him attention.

All this talk of kisses and hugs will give you nothing but problems in the future. He has never been alone in his life, always had mom or siblings and he barely knows you so on top of the dirty shirt grab a towel and let another dog sleep on it for a couple days then throw it in his crate. The smell of another dog will comfort him.

Also make sure the poor little guy doesnt freeze while in his kennel. The floor in your house is generally 2-3 degrees colder than the middle of the room. So a heat pad under the kennel on the outside will help him stay warm. Do not put it inside as he will chew it and shock himself. Also do not use a warm water bottle, in the middle of the night it will have lost its heat and actually be pulling it from puppy.

well it depends where he is crying... in the kennel well then you ignore it... but as for outside that young I never left them out alone as I would go out and make sure they pottied and pooped... and after they did each one I would verbally praise (I never used treats for that)... nice weather I would stay out and play some but cold weather we would go straight back in.... probably around 4 months is when they started going on their own... my doxie is 4 months and she goes out with Blitz our almost 4 year old gsp....

All good advice above.

Funny thing to add. My to GSP liter mates I didnt even hear them bark untill they were about a year old. They have never been barkers though.

Yea, they cryed the first day or so when I just got them.

One of the DK breeders was telling me that DKs get over changes and potential stressful situations real fast. And that is one traits they look for when breeding. Like they can shrug things off real easy

I agree - DK is a superior breed.

in regards to the crying - all pups cry in the situations your desribed when first brought home.
Environment, training and temperment.
These are the 3 main factors that will determine how a dog turns out.

I have to disagree with pixie. I do not believe there are any breeds that are necessarily superior to other breeds whether it is shorthairs vs DKs vs Pointers or any other breed. Instead I believe that there are preferences people have and a wide variety of jobs we ask our dogs to. You also have environmental influencers in how dogs evolve over the short time and over a longer period. I personally think my dogs are the best dogs in the world, but realistically that is because my dogs are influenced by their environment and my training and have pretty much turned into the dogs I want. I dislike seeing anyone say one breed is superior to another because we have enough issues with the animal rights activists without being divisive within what is fundamentally two different breeds today. In stead pick the dog you prefer to do the job want, but don't denigrate others by saying essentially "my dog is better than your dog." It truly is not helpful and is pointless.

I don't remember Bo ever crying more than the first couple nights. We had him in a room across the hall from our bedroom, in a divided wire crate with a blanket over the top, which we pulled across at night time. We had a blanket with littermates and mom's smell on it in there with him as well. I remember for the first week or so, I had to hold him to fall asleep and then I would just shift him into the crate.

I don't know if any of this is helpful. And my mind may have blocked out the worst of it. My "baby" will be 6 yo this week :)

I know guys, but the written word does not carry tone and we have quite a few new folks on the site who may not understand. I always like to err on the side of clarity when I am saying something tongue in cheek so glad pixie added the smiley face. It certainly clarifies what could have been mis-interpreted. And where dogs and especially GSPs are concerned I am usually pretty serious as I have seen way to much misunderstanding on forums and in person based on just such statements.
