Now that Nixie's winding down from her season, I'm looking into her spaying. I've read on other posts about the laser type of spaying but my vet doesn't offer it. I wanted to see if it's worth looking at other clinics to do it? Any personal experiences with either that would be helpful? Thanks for any input!

Bella had the laser and as an active breed my vet highly recommended it (it was only $20 more) as it is easier on the dog, and has a better healing time. Since I was an absolute basket case about leaving her (as I have never waited until after a year with any other dogs) it made me feel a little better. Within days her incision was perfectly intact and it was actually the stitches that were causing her irritation. I was also, as a result, glad I scheduled her stitch removal (my vet doesn't offer dissolvable as he wants to have that follow up appt to make sure all looks well) for the 10th day (they said to schedule removal at 10-14 days) because he said they were beyond ready to come out. I mean, keeping a GSP at bay for 14 days would have been near impossible, I was glad we made it to the 10th and that all looked well. Now I can't even see her incision spot since all of her hair has finally come back in. So, I was personally pleased with the laser option.

I have never heard of any major issues with either. My vet does the traditional spay surgery and when I had Halo spayed (she was seven) she didn't have any issues and they took stitches out about day 10 as well. She does have a scar, but it was from the c-section and not the spay. She had a c-section with her last litter.

I know we had Bo's neuter done with laser. i can't remember if they did Sharz's spay with laser as well. Both went well, regardless. (Bo was 15 mo and Shiraz was 5yo)

Okay, so I didn't realize that there were stitches still with the laser…I'll have to research a bit more. Thanks for sharing you guys!

My understanding was it was just an "easier" cut to the dog that would ultimately cause less swelling and soreness and heal faster. It probably doesn't make a huge difference and I honestly didn't even know I had an option until I dropped her off. I was already a wreck and when they asked me what I preferred I literally almost burst into tears because I didn't know one from the other. Luckily they were patient and explained to me lol. Really what it gave me was peace of mind knowing I could provide Bella with what was considered an easier procedure on the dog. Whether it made a huge difference I can't truly say because we only had one experience. But, I felt good about it and good about the results

That same peace of mind for you may come with using your regular vet vs having to use one you don't know to go with the laser option...
