| I saw Bella take BOB. Very nice looking girl. Sorry she didn't take Group, but I liked Oakley too. Very upset that Fifi didn't get BIS. |

wow Oakley is stunning! Was totally bummed to see another pseudo-dog win I didn't think Fifi showed as well as she can - the boxer was also stunning - tough group. |

| I was just happy to see and good variety of dogs in the BIS ring with some different breeds represented too. The shorthair breed ring was strong this year and especially in bitches. There were some really nice shorthairs in NY. |

Yeah, that. It sometimes seems as if judges favor dogs that have either been turned into Frankendogs by "selective" breeding, or groomed into nonsensical shapes rather than dogs that, well, look (and function) like dogs. The Peke was really the low point.
I can't understand how we had GSP and Flat-coated Retriever winners! |

| Really? Can't we just celebrate the success of a shorthair in whatever venue? I intended this thread to congratulate a friends dog and a wonderful success. If you want to discuss successes of dogs in the field that is fine, but start a new thread please. |

Texas Belle,
Do they have dog shows in Austin? I would LOVE to go! They have a pretty good one in Houston, I think it's usually in July. I can let you know if you are interested.
oh, and I agree with you...BOB is cool in any venue!
What is BIS, (best in show?) Forgive my ignorance in lingo for the dog shows. I love watching the shows and agility. I have no idea what the judges are looking for, but it's really neat to see the dogs (in all the breeds) all prance around and KNOW they look just absolutely beautimous!
I was a little shocked over the show labs. They look nothing like our field labs. The show labs were much shorter and more stout. Our black lab is actually quite large and stout, with a big blockhead, but some of the labs in the show looked too short and stout. Do they hunt with these show dogs too? Just curious.....I don't think I would have noticed had we not lived with two pure bred labs for so long! However, I do not recall what the show dogs looked like 14 years ago! Have they changed, do you know? Do show standards change in dogs from year to year? I probably should be asking these questions in a different thread....sorry if that's the case. Just curious.
Congrats again to your friend for BOB! |

So, there are shows all over the state of TX year round. Coming up in March is San Antonio (6 - 10 March), Houston Farm and Ranch (usually a big show, 15 - 17 March, there is a GSP Specialty on 15 March), Ft Worth (29 - 31 March with a GSP Specialty on 29 March). We have a show coming up in April in Austin (13 - 14 April). I know I will be attending all of these with my girl, Fauna. Fauna got her first major win at Houston Reliant with a Best of Winners. that was in July 2010 when she was about 8 months old. I usually show at Reliant if I have a dog I am showing. I plan to be there this year too. I was also supposed to take her to a Hunt Test this last weekend, but it was cancelled due to low entries, so I showed her in San Marcos instead. BIS is Best in Show. It is very hard to change breed standards as it should be, but the parent clubs can vote changes based on their rules and the rules of the AKC. The GSPCA is voting on removing the DQ for black in our elections this March. If it passes then our breed standard will be changed. After a change to the standard there is a 5 year period where the AKC will not allow another change. As for labs, I don't know much about them except that the show lines have greatly diverged from field lines. I truly doubt many of the show labs could work in the field all day as their legs are way short. That said there are still some lab breeders that manage to compete in both field and show successfully, but they have to pick and choose the show judges carefully. I have two good friends that have show and field labs that do both. I doubt the lab standard has changed all that much, but there is always room for interpretation in any standard, so you often see breeds change based on what is winning whether in field or show. That is not always a good thing as you can imagine. Thankfully shorthairs for the most part are doing ok and we do have some really nice Dual Champions (DC). If we aren't careful though we could end up like other breeds which I do not think would be good. I try to do allot of things with my dogs for that reason. My challenge is time and training facilities. I just lost the place I trained for hunting due to the economy. The owner of the hunt club had to sell as he couldn't afford to keep it up. So, now I am not sure where I will train as there is nothing all that close to me. Will have to figure something out though soon. My preferred venue is obedience, but I do conformation with my dogs too as long as they have fun at it and I try to get some of the HT titles on my dogs, but again that is a struggle as there are not many HT around and the ones we do have are not doing very well with entries. So I will have to see how that goes. If you want to keep up with upcoming shows and locations go to the AKC website and do an event search for conformation in TX. The Houston Show coming up is at Farm and Ranch #1 Abercrombie Dr (at Hwy 6). I will post show times for shorthairs when I get them. Maybe you can make that show. |

Thanks so much for all this wonderful information!! My Breeder had a GSP win something........or post about a winning GSP on her facebook. I LOVE dog shows. I could have gone to the San Marcos show, but didn't know of times or places......now I know who my go to gal is going to be! Thanks a million!
Sorry you lost the place you normally train in. My husband trained both our labs, and finding a location was always a challenge. |

| as for the field event vs confirmation showing... the idea of the show ring is to present a properly put together dog that will do well in what it has been bred to do...some people show both in the ring and in the field and get dual titles don't they? I know the other day I looked up the akc description of the dachshund (we were seeing if our lil rescue fit the description cuz to use she looks almost 100% doxie) and it mentioned in the show ring you can not disqualify for scratches or scars due to the fact that they are used for hunting... not sure if the GSP are the same I didn't look, but I think it would be... |

Splat - It is the same with GSPs and many of the dogs being shown are also field dogs or family hunting dogs. gsplover - Your breeder finished her lovely girl in San Marcos. Her girl is from another friend of mine who bred her dog to a third friend of mine's dog. I know that is allot to follow. Anyway she won winners bitch and best of winners from the classes to finish her CH, and then competed in breed where I was showing my girl who is already finished. My girl was Select Bitch in breed so it was a nice all round winning day for the both of us. Your breeder is a good friend of mine and so is her sister. They both also do field work with their dogs. Your breeder actually trains both pointers and retrievers in all the venues including field and has some very nice show and hunting labs and shorthairs. |

The show ring has ruined more breeds than the field ever will.

| I would rather see folks work together instead of pointing fingers because frankly I have seen some pretty poorly structured dogs and dogs with dish noses at some of the National field events, it is on both sides and not just on the breed side. Instead of pushing the us vs them or my dog is better than your dog debate, I think we would do better by shorthairs if we focus on how to keep the breed strong, healthy and structurally sound so they can play all the games we play with shorthairs. Please stop trying to change this thread into the us vs them debate. If you want to pursue that discussion please start your own thread. |
