Subject: New pup or not?

We have two GSP's Banjo is 13yrs old. We have a 4month old pup. They get on really well, sleep together etc. The problem is, she jumps on him to "piggy back" & he barks to tell her off. This annoys the neighbours. Is this a puppy thing or will she grow out of it? When she is tired, everything is great. Should we get another pup to keep her company, or will it lead to two pups annoying Banjo? If we get another pup,male or female? Thanks for any advice.

How does that old saying go " you can pick your nose but you can't pick your neighbors ? " Anyway I wish all people were dog people. For myself being older I don't know if I could have two pup's at the same time. NOT to say don't do it ! I would say two little ones at the same time would be hard.

I think it would be hit or miss... the pups would play together, but they would also gang up on the old one too at times... maybe just keep a better eye on the pup and when it looks like she is going to "piggy back" the other stop it before it happens... at this stage you can teach your pup rules and that might just have to be one... As for male or female I don't think it matters... if you get the opposite sex then you have to be careful when the one is in heat till they get "fixed"...

I know on another thread that someone mentioned older dogs are usually more tolerant of puppies, but my experience has a been a little bit opposite. When Bella was an exuberant pup (as opposed to the exuberant young adult she is now lol), most adult dogs felt inclined to put her in her place as a mode of "teaching". The only dogs that really tolerated play with her were other puppies. So when she was around my nephew dog, who is now her best buddy, he was quite unforgiving of her puppy antics, and really wanted nothing to do with her until she started aging a bit. With age, came respect and more understanding of dog language. It took a little bit of time, but since she looked up to him...she started to respect his boundaries more than other "random" dogs. As she respected him telling her "enough was enough" more, he began to tolerate her more...and now he plum looks forward to seeing her. Point being, it will take a little bit of time, but she will learn to understand and read his language that he does not like what she is doing. Until then, as mentioned by someone else, help her understand it is not allowed. I think two puppies might be overwhelming to you, as well as to him. It also runs the risk or taking way too much of your attention and leaving him feeling a bit hung out to dry.

I think the 'old' dogs are tolerant isn't accurate - 'older' dogs yes 'old' dogs often not Your older dog at 13 is well past puppy antics IMO. But that's fine and its good that he barks at her to get off - he should do. As for your neighbors - seriously - we have a neighbor whose dogs are out all the time NON-STOP barking, that is worth complaining about but an occasional bark. Pull-ease!! I don't think another pup is a great idea - at 4 months you have plenty of work to do with this one. As she ages and learns how to better interact with your older dog all will be fine. I would look to see if you can find her a more suitable playmate - a friend's dog or relative's etc. Perhaps you can meet someone at puppy obedience class or something.

Personally, I'd wait a bit. At Banjo's age, it could be a bit hard on him. JMHO

Older dogs often are more tolerant of puppies when the older dogs are in an established pack. For instance my oldest girl will let any of the puppies that one of my other females had two years ago do anything and that includes hanging all over her. However, she was with them from birth until they went to their forever homes and is part of the established pack. That is not to say she never corrects the youngsters, but most of the time she is extremely tolerant. Strange dogs on the other hand is hit and miss. Some will be tolerant and others not as much, so I am always careful with young dogs around strange older dogs.
