 Hello!

Stella acquired coccidia back in November from a doggy day care. We will never go back! To date she is still experiencing symptoms - some days her BM will be fine others she will have diarrhea. She was on Albon for about 3 weeks. I know Albon only reduces the colonization and doesn't actual kill it. So, we went the hollistic route to try and repair her flora. We have her on pumpkin, chia seeds, probiotics and oregano oil (as I heard it has antibacterial and antiviral properties). So far she is still having problems. This morning she has been experiencing intestinal distress. Poor thing. I wish I could figure out how to fix it. She eats Acana wild prairie. I thought about changing her food too. Maybe the coccidia is done and now she has a food allergy or it is too protein packed? Has anyone experienced coccidia and have any helpful tips we could try. I am up for anything! :) thank you!,

My boy had coccidia when he was little. It is pretty common and it probably came from another dog staying at that daycare. I wouldn't be to hard on them as the dog that passed it on may not have even had symptoms. In any case his digestive track is probably irritated now. I would recommend putting him on a bland diet. Something like cooked chicken or hamburger and rice, and add a little pumpkin and see if that helps. You could also add in some yogurt to repopulate his system with good bacteria too. When his stool firms up, then gradually switch him back to his regular food. Also you could try just keeping him on his regular food with the pumpkin and some yogurt and give him some Pepto Bismol. The dosage is by weight. If you go this route it may take a few doses. I use the Pepto any time mine get a loose stool and it usually dose the trick. It is hard to get them back on track once they have had coccidia. Also, have you had him rechecked for coccidia? It can be a hard to get rid of.

Some vets are not able to even run tests to check for cocidiosis. So even if the day care asks for negative stool samples there may be no way for them to have known this was going on with the dog that carried it. And the dog carrying it could be shedding it but not be effected by that if it has a strong immune system that is fighting off the symptoms. Once a dog has it it doesn't actually get rid of it. It just fights off the side effects and then it won't shed it either. How old is your dog? It may just be a continued up hill battle til the dogs immune system is mature enough to handle fighting off the symptoms on its own. Keep at it. It is very frustrating at times but your dog will get through it! :)

Thank you for your responses. Stella will be 1 year old this month - actually she is a leap year baby so we will have to celebrate her birthday a day before or after! We have tried the plain chicken and rice diet a few times. It definitely gets her back on track. Then about a week or so later she will have really soft stools again. Typically she will only have a BM 2x a day. On her "bad" days she will go a few times close together. I will try the plain, sugar free yogurt today and see how that goes. If she has another episode of distress I will try the pepto. I heard it takes a long time to get them back on track so hopefully we don't have too much longer. :)

Jena - so sorry to hear about your Stella's struggle with coccidia. Our Luna actually exactly a year ago struggled with coccidia for almost 5-6 months until we were finally able to clear it. She went the 3 rounds of different medications, the names of which I can't specifically remember now, but could pull up if you wanted. Anyhow, not sure if the last one worked of if her immune system too was finally able to strengthen and clear it. Thankfully she never had symptoms but what our vet suggested was that we add FortiFlora (a probiotic powder made by Purina) and add it daily to her food. After using it for about a month along with that last trial of antibiotic, she finally had a clear stool sample and has stayed clear since! Couldn't tell you what a celebration that was. You could try to add that to Stella's food and it may help. Best of luck! let me know if you want to know the meds Luna was on and I can pull it up.

Thank you! We had Stella on a powder probiotic and recently finished the bottle. So, we will need to grab another and keep going with that. Stella was on Albon for about 3 weeks. Was Luna on the same? I would love to know what medicine helped clear up Luna - if it doesn't take too much digging for you :) we take Stella back to the vet on Friday for another fecal. Keeping my fingers crossed its clear! Thank you for all the info.

reading this thread alarms me, willow had the same thing from staying in a kennel while we were out of town fro thanksgiving, i noticed she was not acting the same. when i took her to the vet she tested positive for the same thing, he give me two things for her and saidshe should be fine, half way thru it she was back to her old self, but she has loose stools a few times a week, and other times it seems fine, though she struggles sometimes to poop.thinknig maybe i should take her back for another check?

Jena - she went thru these 3 meds before we finally were able to get it out of her system. She had a repeat stool sample each time after treatment. I can't remember how long she was on each, but I definitely remember it was a long treatment regimen. The last one after which it was cleared was by far the easiest to give for only 3 days if I remember correctly.
first try - Sulfadimethoxine 500mg
2nd try - Ormetoprim Sulfa 240
3rd and successful try - Ponazuril 90mg/ml suspension + 1 month of fortiflora probiotic powder.

We've kept Luna on the probiotic powder since then, that I just order on amazon. They come in little individual packets and is really easy to use. Good luck!
