| I keep getting pharmacy adds from members of the working gun dog list. I
have been
wondering about our friends in New Zealand. I Pray that they are safe and
didn't

When we got a broadband connection some years ago the
ISP was new on the market and did not have a spam filter at all in the
servers. We could get something like 60 - 70 spam per day and were
finally prepared to go back to the slow dial-up connection. I guess
customers complained too much and the ISP installed the filter and seems to keep
it updated. It is efficient, only a couple of spam each week will slink through
the grid and those ones are taken care of by our own anti-spam program.
At least that is what I like to think....a half year ago I
by mistake happened to land in some phising website with the old computer and
caught a virus or something and our antivirus program jammed it but at the same
time jammed the entire computer. I finally had to replace the C drive with a new
one to get the machine going again....
Be careful out there on the wild, wild web! There are more
trigger happy bad guys than good guys...... Lucky Luke, Wyatt Earp and
Pale Rider! Where are you when we need you?
Talking about drugs: I have been poisoned by all the drugs
the doctors ordered me to eat. I finally, at the beginning of July, by my own
initiative stopped eating them and started to feel much better within a week.
Today it is probable that I go back to work already this month. The drugs seemed
to have efficiently masked all the good effects from the by-pass operation in
2007! The funny things is that I do not need any of them, they were given to me
as a routine measure. So I have been poisoned for 3 years, small wonder I did
not feel quite well and was tired like hell, even after 6 months of
rest.
Larka is developing well. She is still a "small" dog but
her will to overcome any weakness is incredible and she is very easy to handle,
I must say! She is not the genius that Sunnie would have become (Sunnies sister
won the very prestigious Birddog Derby some days ago), she is not even distantly
as bold and difficult to handle as Foxy was but she could well develop into
the no-nonsense professional gundog that Briz became in the end. And that
is good enough for me. In addition she is very sweet :-

| Several years ago my Dr. took my blood pressue (BP) and had a fit. It was 155/90
in oth arms and he prescribed 'Norvasc,' a calcium channel blocker at close to $1
per pill to lower it. After buying 100 of those pills and only slightly recovering
from the 'sticker shock,' I read up on the calcium channel blockers and decided -
no way! I had been on hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, a simple diuretic) for my
marginally high BP earlier and it seemed to "work" but some developing arthritis in
the base of a big toe prompted the Dr. (a different one) to take me off it saying
"your BP isn't all that bad anyway." I called the Dr. and asked for a script for
the HCTZ saying I'd clean up my diet and get some regular exercise before taking
that Norvasc stuff. I haven't done much different in the eating area (kinda cut
down on carbohydrates and try and eat good vegies etc) but we started walking with
the dogs about two miles every morning and in the afternoon again for somewhat
lesser distance. Recently I hadn't had my walks since Storm died July 4th, had
been stressed and depressed, and the BP was creeping up again! But I had to see the
first Dr again so before the appointment I took a 40 minute walk around the
hospital campus. After asking me why I took that walk The Dr. found my BP to be
119/72 and said "I wish I had your BP!" He seemed unaware of the ramifications of
regular exercise!

Get Kaspersky anti-malware and you won't have these problems. It is
good stuff.
Good point about our New Zealanders. Hope they are okay.

Yes, it is quite amazing how simple things can be
if you keep them simple! However, having been in the hospital circus for 4 years
now I think I have started to understand something about the governing
powers behind it. The way the legislation is written around medical activities
the doctors have to protect their own back half of their working hours. They
must do anything they can to treat you according to established standards.
If not, they can be held responsible if something goes wrong with
you.
It is the same in my occupation, as a seaman. Half
of my job consist of keeping the supervising authorities back clear. Instead of
spending time and money on real, practical safety I spend time recording for
safety meaningless events and filling checklists that have no practical
purpose whatsoever for safety at sea. The purpose of this activity is to save
the authorities from responsibility should something serious happen. They can
say that we have done everything we possibly can but those idiots screwed things
up and fooled us.
I am pretty sure that this is what they did on the
BP oil rig in the Mexican Gulf. They spent their time filling in checklists and
records instead of spending it doing practical maintenance that really
would have made the difference. When the accident happened they had perfect
records to show up according to the instructions from the supervising
authorities. The authorities had their back cleared but still the rig sank! This
type of pirate-culture is for sure common in the international merchant
navy and I am pretty sure it is common wherever heavy duty technical stuff meet
with the possibilities of high profits. It is made possible by the lack of
co-operation and honesty between ALL the involved parts. Instead all parts try
to protect their back, their power and their profit.
Realising this matter of facts must have been a
chock for the Swedish chairman of the board for the British Petroleum. He came
from the clinically clean electronics laboratories and industries of the
Ericson company and had to face the Scrapheap Challenge! I can imagine how
shaken he must have been when the truth slowly came out for him :- )) Even big
boys make their mistakes... Really, you can not blame him for ruthlessly
littering the Gulf but you can blame him for being naive and ingenious for
taking a job that an experienced and responsible marine engineer like me would
not think of, not even in the most delirious moments :-
))
Returning to everyday life I can just establish
that without having dogs for the last 20 years I would hardly been alive today.
They make the difference, 3 fellow marine engineers have died on their duty due
to heart failures and none of them had a dog!
So now Larka and me will take a looong walk....
well, she runs, I walk:- ))

| The plan is the same over here where "healthcare" is now such a large and rapidly
growing fraction of the total National economy that something must be done about
that too. Unfortunately, I am reasonably certain the Lawmakers' recent effort has
substantial potential to exacerbate the issue rather tham ameliorate it.

| Rose is in Christchurch and all the stuff in her house got thrown around,
but house itself
seems to have weathered the quakes.
I will leave Rose to tell you about it, she has tried to reply but gets
bounced.
The earthquakes just keep coming, on and on. They just had a couple 4's.

I am nearly 6hr drive from Christchurch and never felt a thing.

one time! 7.2 is a pretty good jolt. Let's hope the fault just continues to
relieve itself with 'little' ones!

They lost a lot of beautiful historic buildings, and the centre of the city
was just re-opened this morning.
Many people have had serious damage to their homes, the ground liquified in
places and muddy silt covered
everything and has had to be carted away. Big cracks opened up in the
ground. The water was off for days, in a few areas it may still be off.
The sewerage was damaged and some is still leaking into the river. There
have been lots of heart attacks. It is amazing that no
one died, two serious injuries. Most schools not opening until Monday.
Adults and children very tired and stressed, many
are leaving the area for some rest from it all.
The civil defence worked very well.
Can only hope that the stress is being relieved along that fault (which no
one knew was there) but very little is known about it all.
Stuffed if I'd enjoy a decent sized earthquake approx every hour for a week.

There was a complaint this morning on the TV that the BBC had not reported
much on the NZ earthquakes and I have to admit that after the first one I
had no idea that there were continued, smaller ones. It must have been very
frightening waiting for the next shock.
My GSP breeder has emigrated this year to near Christchurch, I imagine they
never expected an earthquake!
I am sorry that so much damage has been done and I feel so sorry for the
stress it must be causing.

It was a quiet day Saturday but revved up again today.
A number of smaller businesses will go under I expect. The Govt had lashed
out and given
firms with under 20 employees $350 a week for each person. Bit of a bummer
for someone with
21 employees eh?
I expect they feel those firms should have insurance, but what if they
haven't?
Was it Catherine who moved here? She is at Rangiora and is ok, home ok too
from what
I can gather.
Cheers

We have not had any news from NZ after the first
big one. When the media found out that no-one was killed and only a few hurt
they lost interest.
In Scandinavia we live in a well protected part of
the world and our greatest threat are probably our own politicians, closely
followed by the EU politicians.
Anyway, how do wildlife react to the chain of after
shakes?

I does look like things are quieting down - slowly and a little.
Not to belittle the damage or fear the people experienced - but consider the enrgy
released in a 9.2 (Anchorage Alaska 1964) vs 7.2 (Christchurch Sept 4, 2010) is
1000 times more. Parts of Ancorage turned to liquid mud and slid all over too.
Let's hope the next week is better.

Thanks Marg, yes it is Catherine, glad she is OK.
When you say it has 'revved up again today" does that mean more earth
tremors I that area?
Glad I am not there as we had a weeny one here (well two actually over the
years) and it was scary, so I can imagine how frightening it must be waiting
for the next lot of tremors.
Best,
Sonia

I also visited the Rangiora town in NZ by Google
earth, some of the main street buildings are shown in 3D. Everything seems to be
so nice and tidy down there and I guess the nearby mountains provide good deer
shooting or whatever game that can be taken home and put on the plate. The
vicinity to the sea promises a good supply of fresh fish. The snake in the
paradise seems to be the geological activity.....unless they have imported
politicians from the EU :- ))

| Yes Sonia.
Saturday was pretty calm for them but back to one about hourly by the looks.
Shops in centre of Christchurch open now, most schools back.
Chile looks the place to avoid. Man do they have some humongous quakes!
