Do different breeds entice different kind of people over there? To me it seems like those running German versatiles and those running British birddogs are more or less totally separated here in Sweden. Torsti ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yes, I think so. Decades ago in the US we started developing four distinct kinds of German shorthair and these only rarely have interchangeable characteristics. Of course we had the bench show shorthairs and the field trial type shorthairs. We also had the versatile dog tests shorthairs and strictly hunting shorthairs. Then there were the house pet type shorthairs... We are probably in the same situation that you have described. Anyway the four main groups tended to keep to themselves and they each had different standards for selection for breeding and so we had some very distinct breed lines among German shorthairs (DKs) in the US and, to some extent, in Canada. A very few of the hunting only shorthair fanciers joined the versatile dog testing groups but for the most part they kept to themselves and produced some very, very good hunting shorthairs. Most of the hunting-only shorthair lines were registered with the American Kennel Club but their owners and breeders weren't involved with AKC's organizational activities. Some of these groups are so distinct now that they speak different jargons of dog speak and cannot understand each other's objectives and standards. One has to work with diligence to be conversant with show, trial, testing and hunting enthusiasts. After years of discussing dog anatomy and behavior with AKC (show) judges I have given up trying to understand what they want or why they want it and they certainly don't understand anything about working gun dogs and their breed lines.
