I just returned from my fall archery elk hunt into the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico. The hunt was 7 days. We packed in on horseback. Traveled about 7 miles in. Did not see one hunter the whole hunt. Called in a lot of bulls, mostly small ones. I took a shot at a small bull the second day and he turned just as I released the arrow. Good luck for me. I had a shot at a much larger bull the second to the last day. Got him. Looks like he is going to score around 340 to 350 Pope and Young record book. It takes a 260 to get in the book. Biggest bull I have ever bagged in 22 years of archery elk hunting.Lots of fun to hunt, loads of work packing out. These guys field dress around 600 lbs. Lots of good eating though.
