We, too, had a cold winter, late, cool spring and late, cool summer. Yesterday's high temperature up in Anchorage was 16 degrees F below the record for the date set in 2005. There is more snow left on the mountain we watch than I remember at this time of year in thirty years. I need to try and get some more information about the progress of the year to make sure it has really been cold, but it sure seems that way. February was extraordinarily cold in Anchorage and all coastal people I've talked with have commented on the long cold winter, lack of rain and abundance of snow. I'm wondering if the Japanese current (which warms this part of the Pacific basin much as the Gulf Stream warms your part of the Atlantic) has begun to shut down. I've heard speculations that the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic has shut down before after brief spurts of warming climate with the result that mean annual temperatures in Northern Europe dropped precipitously by tens of degrees over short time spans - on the order of small tens of years. The rapid coolings following warmings were apparently fact discovered by close examination of Greenland ice sheet cores. The GS shut down is speculation, I believe. How "inconvenient" it would be for Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" if this phenomenon were to be repeating right now! One thing is for sure; Old Mother Earth will tell us the "truth" when she's ready!
