Good supply of ruffed grouse, woods have all turned colour but haven't shed many leaves. No migrant woodcock yet. Have been slow hunting (my advanced age) with my 11 and a half year old Drahthaar Flita... she hunts close and the young male (Kyle) hunts further out. Each dog handled a grouse perfectly today, two points, two shots, two retrieves to hand. At that I decided I was way ahead in the game and we quit for the day. Encountered a number of turkeys today, they're starting to move northwards, there were none here five years ago. Of course they're out of season (you need a permit for them) so I wasn't tempted. Have plenty of sign in the woods but haven't seen a moose yet this year, today was the last day of the season. Helped a friend track down a cow moose he had shot, 300 meters in heavy cover. He has yet to learn to take one shot and then wait for the moose to drop, he got excited and shot twice and spooked the animal. Dressed weight about 465 pounds. Still waiting for woodcock flights, hope to get in some concentrated bird work if they arrive before deer season opens in November. Cj
