Watched a saluqi (a sight dog with scenting abilities) run a rabbit/hare until it stopped in a some brush - it stood (pointed) until the bedouin came up and picked up the animal.

Point of this - they dog could have easily have grabbed the rabbit - but didn't. It waited for the human to pick it up and appeared quite happy - that the rabbit had been captured.

Is this not similar to how a good grouse dog would work a bird and is happy about the result.

Probably a difference in that the rabbit had been run to a stop - where a bird could not have been pushed this hard without flying.

Maybe (and the think it is a hugh maybe) a bird can be pinned as was the rabbit.

Maybe the real oriigin of the pointing dog comes/is from the middle east.

The Saluki, as we in Sweden write the name of the breed - right or wrong? - is a dog that I admire a lot. Our late Foxy played with one many years ago at the Swedish Dog Training Centre. It was owned by a vet at the school. Foxy and the Saluki chased each other and I could feel the ground vibrating when the Saluki passed by me. The much larger Saluki, with a much higher top speed, ran in wide circles around me while Foxy, being small,  ran in smaller circles. That way they compensated for their difference in size. The strength, speed and the beauty of the Saluki (at least this particular specimen) struck me blind and right at that spot I decided that if I ever became so old and lame so I could hardly move around in the woods anymore, I would get one of these, obedience train it and then just watch it run on open fields under my control. Yes, I have a dream - but the dream can wait :-))

The Arabs have done falconry for thousands of years, and otherwise hunted with dogs,  so I guess they have the skill to train a dog or other animals to do anything they wish. Mr. Arkwright, the creator of the modern pointer, searched back about their history and found "pointing dogs" as far back as 2000 years ago in the middle east. So I guess you are on the right track, Bill!

Some years ago Briz pointed into some small bush. I thought it might be a woodcock so I told her to flush it and got ready with the gun. She hesitated so I told her again. Now she dived into the bush and pottered around for a while and then came out with a hare puppy in her mouth. I was of course surprised and a felt a bit stupid since I had not suspected anything when I had to tell her twice to flush the "bird". She has never been the one who asks twice if she can flush a bird, and she also looked a bit ashamed when she brought the puppy out. I told her to let it go and she dropped it immediately and I hope and believe it was not hurt by Briz teeth. Then again, they are very delicate the small ones and it could have been the end of the day for that puppy...
