In addition to Briz field trial qualification, Maud
also got an award "The best amateur handler during the entire trial (all
stakes included) that handles the dog to a prize in a way that is pleasing
for both eye and ear." So they both came home shining as bright as a pair
of super-nova's in some distant galaxy.
Today Briz glory fell down to her knees or even
below them when she and me were out looking for mushrooms. She disappeared
for awhile and then I felt a terrible, and to my great disappointment a
well known smell in the forest. Briz had again found a horrible source of rotten
biological tissue of some kind and rolled in it.
I do not know if the flue had cleared my nose so
that it was more sensitive than usually but today the safety distance to
Briz, when she was upwind from me, was several hundred meters! The entire forest
smelled like from the decomposing carcasses of a thousand skunks!
I was happy I had the pick-up. Briz rode home on
the back of it and then I used a bottle of Fairy handdish detergent and a cubic
meter of warm water to scrub her clean.
I did that while she was still sitting on the back
of the pick-up to prevent her to spread the smell around the backyard or on the
porch. When I pulled the hose to the car I saw that she knew what was
going to happen. She did not move a feather in protest but sat and stood still
and let me do what I had to do. I saw in her eyes that she did not like it but I
also saw something else. I saw that she said to me: " No matter what you think
of me or do to me - It was worth it !"
I recognised the look from other occasions and
other happenings when she was younger. Sometimes her mother Foxy also had the
look when she knew she had done something wrong but thought that "it was worth
it"our disapproval. There is the though streak that characterize the entire line
of the bitches in Skedoms F-litter (that Foxy came from) and also some earlier
Skedoms litters. Briz has also got a touch of it... " It was worth
When Foxy was about as old as Briz is now (8years),
the streak started to fade away. I hope Briz will loose it also some day -
Another similarity to earlier bitches: Springer the
Spaniel was as best in her work from around 3- 4 weeks before she started to
come to heat until she just came into high heat, then she turned a bit
broadminded and wishy-washy while in heat. Briz worked excellently in
the trial and she is just about coming to heat!
Perhaps bitches could be doped before a trlal with
some female hormones? If so, what would you dope male dogs with?
