Sonia, I hope I don't seem presumptuous here and that this helps you progress as a trainer. 1. Here are some rules that may help. Some are OLD, some I took from the writings of an American who wrote extensively about dogs and trainers - Bill Tarrant. a. NEVER give a command you can not enforce. Eight short words that add up to a whole lot more than appears on the surface. Think about this in the context of your everyday training and in the context of the second sentence of the quote below. b. If the dog's behavior has made you mad, he's defeated you. Well, I don't think dog's are out to defeat us, but we can sure defeat ourselves by losing control of our emotions when we are trying to train a dog. Corollary: It is more important that you control yourself than the dog. c. When we train we need to be: consistent and insistent and fair. And, here to, there is a lot more there than the sum of those three adjectives alone. There's more, but that's all I have time for and they will take anyone who thinks about them a long way. 2. Drift is still young and you seem to putting him into situations he isn't ready for. This is actually undoing some of your hard work with him. Jere > This is how I have trained Drift and as I have said before, when we are > alone or with my two GSP's he will do it perfectly. With other dogs in > company he will come so far and then jinx away and to make matters worse > when I do get him to come close to me, he hangs onto etc.
