Re: [working-gundog] Heart Op
Perseverance does it! I did not get the buck tonight  although I saw it, but another animal. There came this yearling limping, its right front leg was broken. Only bucks are permitted right now but I guess you can legally finish the suffering of a wounded or sick animal at any time. The animal was in good condition despite of the broken leg. The reason for why there was such traffic tonight was of course that the wind ceased at sunset. That will pull the deer out of their hides and out on the fields.

From the wound on the front of the leg of the yearling I estimate it to be a couple of weeks old but the bone inside was completely loose. When I first saw it it was grazing but held the leg in a strange way. They can survive amazingly well with 3 legs only. Once I killed a very big buck that had a deformed face and mouth and some old wounds on the chest ribs under the skin. I believe it had been hit by a car several years earlier. I do not understand how it could eat when the jaw was freshly broken but it had done well. I did not put it on a scale but in body weight it was without doubt the biggest buck I have killed so far.

As Sonia suggested the buck of today will live another day or rather several weeks more since I do not intend to frighten it anymore until I come back from the hospital. Tomorrow I will skin the yearling and if it is OK it will hang until Monday night.

The dogs are looking up on me again. They always admire me when I come home with game and I can now feel like The Big Chief for some time to come :-)))

I guess they care less about where you hunt but more about what you hunt!
