Hi Leita

My biggest concerns for gsps and most dogs in general are skin allergies.  Living in Florida, I have one bitch with severe allergies during the summer, which dissapate during the winter and early Spring.  None of the vets here are sure why some dogs have these allergies and some do not.  I have 5 gsps  and only one has allergies.  I know many other people in Florida with all breeds of dogs who have the same problem.  Numerous drugs, ointments, food,  etc. have been tried to no avail.  I would be curious to know if other sections of the country have any allergy problems.

Thanks

Barbara A. Boka

Barbara,

We moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to the Sacramento Valley 8 years ago.  Our girl, Maddie, had no allergies in the the SF Bay at all, and when we moved to Sacramento, we had tons of problems.  Only her, our two other GSP's at the time, had nothing.  We did predisone, benadryl, switched foods a few times, food additives, etc.  Only the food additives from Nature's Farmacy West did anything to help her.  They would subside during the winter, and come back full bore in the summer.  Rash was under her arms and in between her toes.

Sacramento is much warmer then the SF Bay Area.  Perhaps that was the difference?

On a side note, I did not have allergies until I moved to Sacramento as well.  My doctor said that our area is a hot bed for allergic conditions in humans.  Makes me wonder about the dogs too.

Regards, Lynn

Hi Lyn

Yes, rash is severe on feet, under arms and chest.  I even tried the immune depressant, allergy shots, prednisone (very limited).  The immune depressant helped, but it is so expensive and not particularly good for the liver, so wont do that again.  Dog is much better already.  Sounds like heat is the big factor (only for some dogs).  Good luck and hope we can find an answer as I believe the AKC Health Foundation is doing a study on allergies.   Will check out the Nature' Farmacy  West for the additive.

Thanks much

Barbara

Barbara,

We used Digestive Enhancer and Digestive Enzymes.  Yellow top and brown top.  It's all natural and doesn't interact with any other medicine.  It really helped to cut down her rash severity, but each dog is different.

I moved from Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.. to Ocala about 5 hours north and out of the tropics. I noticed that two of my dogs coats look like moths have been through them. I find out that this area has what is called the 'Ocala crud'. Seems there are funguses in the soil that some dogs react to. Bought a shampoo from the vet and dogs are doing better.

I had a girl who had an allergic rash as described in SO CA. Through a process of elimination,  I was able to discovered she had an allergy to Brewer’s Yeast, which I had been giving to her in a tablet with Garlic for her coat.  Brewer’s Yeast was a FAD ingredient added to many Foods , Treats, and Vitamins many years ago, and still used today. It is a shame as it is a known allergy trigger. Many breeds have to completely avoid Brewer’s Yeast as a breed. I now avoid any items with Brewer’s Yeast in it. Eliminating Brewer’s Yeast from their diets has solved the issues I was having with her.

I check all Food, and Treats to make sure they do not contain any Brewer’s Yeast.

PetCal Vitamins also have Brewer’s Yeast in them, but I was able to find a Vitamin that does not have ANY Allergy Triggers in it, including not using Brewer’s yeast. It is DocRoys Daily Care from Revival Animal.

I agree with what Barbara is saying, as I also am having skin problems seasonally in FL (same region as Barb).

Hi Leita

My biggest concerns for gsps and most dogs in general are skin allergies.  Living in Florida , I have one bitch with severe allergies during the summer, which dissapate during the winter and early Spring.

Thanks

Barbara,

We used Digestive Enhancer and Digestive Enzymes.  Yellow top and brown top.  It's all natural and doesn't interact with any other medicine.  It really helped to cut down her rash severity, but each dog is different.

Hi Lyn

Yes, rash is severe on feet, under arms
and chest.  I even tried the immune depressant, allergy shots, prednisone
(very limited).  The immune depressant helped, but it is so expensive and
not particularly good for the liver, so wont do that again.  Dog is much
better already.  Sounds like heat is the big factor (only for some dogs).  Good
luck and hope we can find an answer as I believe the AKC Health Foundation is
doing a study on allergies.   Will check out the Nature'
Farmacy  West for the additive.

Thanks much

Barbara,

We moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to the Sacramento Valley 8 years
ago.  Our girl, Maddie, had no allergies in the the SF Bay at all, and
when we moved to Sacramento ,
we had tons of problems.  Only her, our two other GSP's at the time, had
nothing.  We did predisone, benadryl, switched foods a few times, food
additives, etc.  Only the food additives from Nature's Farmacy West did
anything to help her.  They would subside during the winter, and come back
full bore in the summer.  Rash was under her arms and in between her toes.

Sacramento is
much warmer then the SF Bay Area.  Perhaps that was the difference?

On a side note, I did not have allergies until I moved to Sacramento as well.  My doctor said that
our area is a hot bed for allergic conditions in humans.  Makes me wonder
about the dogs too.

Regards, Lynn

Leita -- I'm  not sure how we are to answer this question. Do they want us to:
(1) List the health problems that are most important to us personally (that we are experiencing), or
(2) List he health problems we see as most widespread in the breed, or
(3) List the health problems we think are most serious in the breed.

If I were to use the phone calls from people looking for a new dog as a guide (they had a wonderful Shorthair who died too early) I would list epilepsy, cancer and heart disease.

Try a prey model raw diet. My dog had severe ear problems and elimination of all grain cleared them up. It does take several months for the system to convert.
