Thank you for your response. That was the first article that popped up when I Googled it on Tuesday. I think that it is misleading...meaning that PPDH is the most common of that class of disease. I went further and found an article of 13 and dogs with ppdh, another of 17, etc.  I couldn't find any big studies because I realized that the Drs were right, it is rare. This article was interesting:

  • Peritoneal-pericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH) | Vetstream

    www.vetstream.com/canis/Content/Disease/dis00914Cached - Similar
Introduction. Very rare condition in dogs. Peritoneal-pericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH) is a congenital communication remaining between the pericardial ...
  • I just got off of the phone with one woman that has direct knowledge of this because her dog was diagnosed and treated at Ohio State University a few years ago. It was very good to speak to someone who has a direct connection to the disease, I feel more at ease.  The Dr. at Ohio State had a packed, standing audience of vet students watching the surgery because it is rare to have a case in house. I chose Cornell University to take my GSP to for this reason. They have been in the forefront of veterinary medicine and I want the best for my dog.

Thank you for your response.  If someone else has knowledge of this disease, please help me out.  I am trying to gather as much information as possible for when I meet with the staff at Cornell.

It occurs in the embryologic stage and is considered a prenatal defect. Also said the prognosis is good for dogs that have undergone surgery with no other complicating factors. Like you I found several sites with info, a lot had to do with cats. Good to hear you have talked with someone that has first hand experience with the disease.
