I have 2 dogs that rip up every piece of begging I've ever used. I've spent a fortune on rugs and crate pads. They never consume the shredded bedding, but its very expensive to constantly replace it. I have tried spraying Bitter Apple and Arid Xtra Dry on the bedding to no avail. Does anyone have any other ideas I can try ?

Thanks.

I use denim for my bed rippers. My Pointers will leave pieces of bedding the size of a postage stamp.
I go to the thrift store buy jeans, cut the buttons and zipper out and put 3-4 pairs in their crates.

I use old sheets, no stuffing and they don’t seem to chew them.  2 or 3 to a crate depending on size of sheet.  I ask all my friends when they old sheets or torn ones to give them to me, I fold them up and they work great.  They might dig them to get them “just right” but don’t seem to chew them.  I also look for sheets at garage sales.

Ann - my boy Parker used to shred every bed he could get his teeth on. Jane Handshumaker turned me onto the saddle blankets from Tractor Supply. They look like a 4 ft long Navajo rug - they fold up into 3's to fit into a crate and they are so tightly woven and heavy the dogs get tired of tearing them up. After I used those Parker chewed a couple edges on them but then he gave up. It was too much work. Try one and see if it works. They are generally around $10 dollars or so. Sometimes cheaper on sale.

I use thin moving blankets with no padding, just fold into a big square. I also found sheepskin works well. I also found they don't like freshly laundered bedding, most like the smell of themselves on the blanket but there is just so much smell you can put up with. Dogs like to roll in stinky stuff to mask their odor, it's how they sneak up on their prey.

We use the horse pads that go under the saddle.  They are fleecy, but thicker, and wash well.

We have two shredders as well.

I order these blankets from Ramtex Int’l.

I have used them for 12 years. They are the best blankets ever. They are heavy and take a long time to chew up. If they do chew off a piece they seem to pass through easily.

They can  also be ordered in quantity by phone. (800) 472-6283. - Roger

I do not use cotton or anything that shreds….Emergency Surgery to remove 4 blockages from pieces of shredded towel that were ingested cured me of that one.

For puppies I use fleece.

Good Luck

I have two shredders(actually nesters) and have found that the only thing for them is a crocheted/knitted blanket. I get mine from the thrift stores. Go for the most dense weave. I stay away from the ones that are done in granny square style as the seams between the squares open up.
Now if I forget and toss them a material blanket it does not last long. Also the only time mine rip are when in their crates.

Blankets, sheets, towels don't even last over night.

I have had a similar problem and I have 2 things to offer: 1: crotcheted afgans 2: crate pads from PRIMO pad(they will replace for minimal fee) ---- Ann Wallace wrote: > Worth another try. > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Dorothea Vooris-Hand > To: gsp-l > Sent: Mon, Nov 21, 2011 10:15 pm > Subject: Re: [gsp-l] dog bedding help > > > > I have 2 like that and the only thing they can have in the crate is flat bed sheets ...So far so good :-) Have you tried Sheets yet ? > > > > > From: Ann Wallace > To: gsp-l@shorthairs.net > Sent: Monday, November 21, 2011 8:58 PM > Subject: [gsp-l] dog bedding help > > > I have 2 dogs that rip up every piece of begging I've ever used. Robin, I just left Tractor Supply with 2 of those blankets in hand. I am hoping for a shred-free day tomorrow. Will keep you posted. Thanks for the idea!

We have had the same problem with our GSP. I've too have spent a fortune on crate pads, rugs, blankets anything that I could think of to give him a soft place to rest in his crate. Finally I had to just go to putting him in the crate with nothing. It had been around 4 years since I last put something in there so I thought, maybe he's older and won't chew his pad up. Wrong! He doesn't have to be in there very often but the only thing we can do is leave it bare.

You are quite welcome - I switched over to them for my gang - they like to bunch them up but I still have all the ones I first bought. They wear like iron
