| A while back there was a discussion of tattoos but I can't find the
emails.
Just got a call from an individual in Nevada that is trying to find
out the significance of a tattoo in the right ear of a GSP. It is
01-2. The dog came from the Nevada Humane Society in the Reno area
and the gentleman that called me said they didn't have much
information on the dog other than they approximated his age at or
around 11 years of age.
Any ideas on the tattoo?

With so few numbers, it could be anything? I believe the Canadian
system id's the breeder. We've had one rescue with his AKC number on his
inner thigh, and a found DD with an ear tattoo which was traced back to the
breeder who took him back.

My father-in-law got a GSP from Olive Hill Kennels and he (the dog) has an ear tattoo similar so he may have come from there: http://www.quailpoint.com/dogs-for-sale/They are in Knights Landing, CA about 3 or 4 hours from Reno Hope that helps, Teresa

| Could be a tattoo to indicate that he was neutered. (Although it
should be obvious on a male). Some spay/neuter clinics are now using
some kind of small tattoo inside the ear to mark animals that were
done. If not, maybe a puppy mill identification? Wouldn't think it
would be for ID. Even way back before microchips, they were usually
done on the inside of the thigh?

Yes, the CKC does use a tattoo for id as well as microchips. Usually the first 3 numbers/letters indicate the breeder, and the last 2 or 3 numbers/letters identify the dog and the year it was born. But, this tattoo doesn’t have enough digits for a CKC tattoo. | Thanks to all that have responded. I did talk with the breeder that
Teresa mentioned and he pretty much confirmed he used an ear tattoo to
identify identical looking pups, i.e. black Labs. The first two
numbers being the year and the third one the birth order.
