Could you please post this to the gsp-l list?:

From Lucretia Coonrod, Kan-Point kennel

I am not on the list but I understand that this is the best way to get information out to people quickly.

I would like to set the records straight regarding the article in the newest GSPCA Journal listing the sire and dam of the Kan-Point litter that contained silver puppies.  The sire was NOT Ch Robin Crest Silver Spirit. I take full responsibility for the error and I apologize to Robin and to anyone with Spirit puppies that was upset by this.

Thank you Lucretia for being so above board about your gray puppies -- as well as correcting this unfortunate mistake. I have to say that I have bred to Spirit, and I was not upset by the possibility of his being a carrier for the dilute gene -- we are finding the dilute gene in numerous unrelated breeding programs.

As I have said before on this List, the dilute gene exists in virtually ALL brown colored sporting dogs developed in Europe -- breeds as different as Labrador Retrievers, Wirehaired Pointing Griffons, and Field Spaniels. Because the dilute gene exists across all coat types, it is  thought that the gene came into the dog genome before the types of sporting dogs began to be differentiated  -- around the year 1,000.

I think it is worthwhile testing for -- if you know you have it in your breeding program, then you would make sure any dog you bred to was tested also -- so you don't get any surprises in the whelping box.

Two of the Spirit kids from my breeding have been tested -- the results have come back on one -- Ch. Mariah BDN Ayla Stole My Heart CD RN MH NR, and she does not carry the dilute gene -- from either side of her pedigree.
