Very interesting topic. It used to be that one could look at a dog and tell "whose line" it was from i.e. Kaposia or Columbia River or Huntabird. Now, with people being able to ship semen and use multiple sires it is more common for people to outcross or introduce different dogs into their programs. People are also breeding fewer litters. I feel like a person has to have bred at least about 5 generations of dogs that they have bred with their kennel name in their pedigrees (on both sides) before they could consider having their own "line". Otherwise, they are just linebreeding on someone else's line. There are only a few kennels left that have that strong a genotype that they produce cookie cutter litters. I know I can usually recognize a Bleugras, Robincrest and a few others that have a definite "Style" (I still call it type). These people can fairly well predict what a particular breeding will produce and have a consistent litter. Otherwise, we are just "protecting" a "style" we prefer.
