For example, If I bred a bitch to a dog that had a common ancestor in say the 3rd generation, would it still be outcrossing? I guess the real question is, do you think the traits from a common ancestor on either side of a pedigree (dog and bitch) could still be passed down to a litter? I'm thinking temperment here, not genetic issues. But now that I think about it, I guess genetic issues would also be something to think about. In my opinion for an outcross/no common ancestor found would have to go back further than the 3rd generation more like the 5th of 6th. Keep in mind some early kennel lines were bred down from the use an early popular sire i.e. Ch Adam v Fuerhrerheim. Thus if one looks at a pedigree Adam might show up on both side of a pedigree in the 5th or 6th generation or later. But if he only shows up one time then one would have to take into consideration how many times other dogs that may also have him behind them are found in the pedigree since he was a popular sire and his get may carry different kennel names and Adam may not show up in the 5th generation but the 6th or 7th behind those dogs. There is some that think anything past the first three generations doesn't really account for that much affect on the subsequent litter until a different phenotype shows up down the road. Genetics is a fascinating "shell game". As it pertains to temperament, while some of it is genetic there are other factors that can mold a dog's temperament.
