The thread about HT's led me to remember that in times past it was not uncommon for people in obedience to go for an insurance leg -- one more qualifying score just in case -- especially if you were already entered. And that became not totally uncommon in Hts as well -- if you were entered both days and finished on Saturday and planned to say over, well, you got an insurance leg. Do people still do that in obedience? I don't think people do it in HTs at all any more. In former times, when everything was  manual at AKC, you always had to wonder if all your qualifying scores were recorded properly. That's hardly a problem now

Just wondering.

I know I do this in obedience.  Maple I think has 7 or 8 novice legs.  But I have never heard of it as insurance, but more that the dog is not ready for the next set of exercises but you want to get that ring experience.

I have done it in both obedience and HTs.  You can never be absolutely sure the dog will pass the first day to finish, and even if they did, you can't get your money back for the second day, so why not get the bumper leg? In obedience it is good practice, and in HTs the dogs just love to do it, so why deprive them of an extra day of fun?

Paige has about 12 legs on her JH....she just loves to find birds and well I don't have enough experience to train her in Srs so I entered her just for fun and to support some of the clubs.....it's clearly not the dog as she is ready to move on,  but the handler in this case *sigh*
