We have the Side-by-sides also (for those
wondering, they are 21.5” wide instead of the typical 23-24” wide
crates in that series). They fit a Mercedes ML320 and ML350 from 2006 or
earlier very well -- and you can reasonably expect 300k+ miles from the ML
series if you can live with the maintenance costs J

I have a Ford Explorer (03) that the midwest side by
side SUV crates fit perfectly in. They fit with a couple inches to spare and
with the back set up. They are perfectly sized for the GSPs. The new
Explorers may be smaller in the cargo area.
A friend has a new Nissan Pathfinder which is a little bigger. The midwest
crates fit very well.
Both are great vehicles, drive really well in the snow and are midsized.
There is enough room on top of the crates to fit 2 chairs and 2 soft crates
and then plenty of room in the 2nd seat section.
I am starting to look for a new vehicle as well and the Pathfinder is looking
to be my top choice presently. Nissan also offers really good certified
pre-owned vehicle programs.

I'm at the point of
needing to trade in my Jeep Gr Cherokee for a new car, since it is hitting
the 6 figure mark. Minimum requirements for a new one are one crate in
the back and 1 on the back seat for my two It would be great to get 2
in the back side by side, but that might be too big depending on the wheel
wells. Open to your suggestions for a good dog show vehicle mid range
priced. Pros and cons please. Thanks!!

Diane We use two vehicles to move our dogs with. The chevy trailblazer is excellent and if you don't need a 500 series airline crate you can usually get two crates in side by side. But, it is tight. We also have a honda element and it is also very good. The back seats come out very easily and you can get multiple crates in it pretty easily. Both have been very dependable. Honda gets a little better fuel economy, but the all wheel drive, while good, is not as good as 4 wheel drive, in the trailblazer. Depending on what you like to honda is a pretty utilitarian, no bells and whistles. Terry Brumbaugh Endo Surgical Source, Inc 717-503-7012Tbrumbaugh@endosurgicalsource.com-----Original message-----

I too have an F150 cargo van 6 cyl, gets about 20
mpg. I can put 8 -400 crates, or 5 with my 12' kayak on top of them to go
do water work plus I have room for all training equipment and bird box, guns and
a med ice chest between the front seats. Because I live in Hell (AZ) my van
does not have side windows to let the hot sun glare on the dogs. It cools off
pretty good and the dogs are comfortable. It also keeps the frost out in the
winter and I can sleep in it if need be. Hoping my next one will have
4WD.

Sorry about the last "fake" Email. this is a great discussion.
I have had very few vehicles in my life, I tend to keep cars/SUVs/Vans for
LONG periods of time. Loved my first car a Mustang II, my collage car also
the car I drove around the country for three months one summer - that is another
story . . . .
Had a Toyota truck, not 4 wheel drive in NH, go figure, but it was cheap and
I loved it even when I bounced off the snow drifts. Put about 150,000
miles on it and it also went back and forth across America. Bought a cap
so I could haul stuff and dogs.
My first real "dog" vehicle was a Pathfinder - really loved that one but it
was an "old" style different than the models today. Dennis built a wooden
platform that allowed us to get 2 good size wire crates side by side in the back
with a tiny bit of storage below. Sold her at 175,000 and 10 years old . . . .
Then I had my dream SUV - my Tahoe, a 1999. We all know how much stuff you
can fit in them and no problems with 2 very large wire crates or 500's side by
side. Drove and drove and drove that one. My wonderful husband is a
mechanic by trade, and when the Tahoe had 225,000 miles he suggested that I not
drive much more than 2 hours from home just in case something went wrong
- I decided it was time to get something different.
Now I am driving a 2007 Honda Odyssey that I have had for almost a year
now. It is a living room on wheels, I cannot believe how much space I
have, more than the Tahoe. But I dont love driving it. It is
practical, it is good on gas, it fits at least 4 dogs + stuff, it is safe and I
am well into my 50's. I never in my wildest dreams saw myself driving a
mini van - but at my age I am less concerned about the image. It doubles
as my work vehicle hauling plants, soil, shrubs, wood, garbage, etc.
Good luck in your search for the perfect SUV Diane P. - look forward to
seeing what you end up with - Diane S. / Panamint

| Wow, I'm totally overwhelmed with all the choices and recommendations.
I have some ideas of what will work and some of what won't so off to car land this weekend I go. I have to say though that I LOVE my Jeep Gr. Cherokee and after all your messages perhaps it still has a lot of life left in it!!! I do love the smell of new car though, sort of like puppy breath - when you see one thats adorable you just really want to take it home!!!
As for the mini - van recos....sorry that's a no for me....still a single gal so gotta have something a little edgier !!!
Thanks all for the advice. If anyone has any tips on how to negotiate a great deal we can simply rename the thread "Negotiating for Dogs Comfort Ride " I"m all ears
Have a great evening!!
Diane

I have a 2001 GMC Yukon XL with over 200,000 miles on it - I know it will die soon. At 100,000 miles, my husband wanted to sell it and I said - it goes when it dies. I have fit 2 - 400s and 2 - 500s as well as luggage and a friend for dog show trips. They don't make them like they used to. Now the center seats don't fold down all the way so there isn't enough room for as many kennels. Pam Stillman Alaska
