Hi,
I'm at the point of needing to trade in my Jeep Gr Cherokee for a new car, since it is hitting the 6 figure mark. Minimum requirements for a new one are one crate in the back and 1 on the back seat for my two It would be great to get 2 in the back side by side, but that might be too big depending on the wheel wells. Open to your suggestions for a good dog show vehicle mid range priced. Pros and cons please. Thanks!!

I bought a Nissan Pathfinder and have a crate which is made for SUVs. They are from www.dogbox.ca. I love the car and the crates. I have two GSPs and we also have a border collie. When he comes too I have a soft crate that sits in the middle row.
The car has alot of features I love and the AC vents in the roof work great for the crates in the back. The car is big enough for me, my daughter and three dogs along with our gear to travel to shows. Roz

Diane We use two vehicles to move our dogs with. The chevy trailblazer is excellent and if you don't need a 500 series airline crate you can usually get two crates in side by side. But, it is tight. We also have a honda element and it is also very good. The back seats come out very easily and you can get multiple crates in it pretty easily. Both have been very dependable. Honda gets a little better fuel economy, but the all wheel drive, while good, is not as good as 4 wheel drive, in the trailblazer. Depending on what you like to honda is a pretty utilitarian, no bells and whistles. Terry Brumbaugh Endo Surgical Source, Inc 717-503-7012Tbrumbaugh@endosurgicalsource.com

I have a Toyota Sienna mini-van (not an
SUV), but it fits two 26 inch crates side by side in the back. You can
also take the passenger seats out to add more. Also, I have never had it
in the shop except for normal maintenance and it is a dream on the road.
Great vehicle.

I have a 2007 Kia Sorento...best vehicle I've ever owned. I have had higher
end vehicles and really disliked them. My Kia can fit 2 -400
crates side by side in the back and another crate in front of those. It's been
a totally dependable vehicle (now has 107K). I was very impressed with it
when I t-boned a deer at 60 MPH that came out of a vineyard and jumped in front
of me....I barely felt the impact as there is 2-2.5 feet of foam in the front
end. I am planning on buying another Sorento in a year or so. I also just heard
a report that said Kia sales surpassed Toyota this past year. Kia is
manufactured by Hyundai.....................

I have been driving a Honda Odyssey for years. You can fold down the
back seat and put in two crates side by side and still have the middle row for
seating. The best car I have ever driven. We are looking for a
new one but due to the earthquakes in Japan, there is a very small inventory
right now. We are waiting for the fall. Take a look at one

I have had both the Chevy Trailblazer and now the GMC Envoy. Love them
both, especially the vehicle height for tons of snow on our dirt road.
I can pack for two people for a four day show and two dogs. Two 400
varikennels across the back, two fold up chairs and flexis in between the
crates, leashes and crate fans clipped to doors. Behind the vari kennels,
two fold up wire crates. Water jug, show bag, two suitcases next, show
suits on hangers on doors. Boots or mucks go under the folded down back
seat with water buckets unless they are in the crates. I also have a
fold up cooler, or, a small one that plugs into a vehicle power
source. They both come with two plugs so you can use GPS and plug in
the carphone. The Envoy has Onstar and sunroof......... I bring a
shade tarp and clips and bath towels that go along the outside of the
varikennels voila, we are set!
Gas mileage in any vehicle at this point is a con.................but I
love the AC, stereo, and with my GPS we're off!

I told Beretta if she finishes her Master Hunter title I will buy her a Suburban.
Something to check into when looking for new vehicles is how the E85 gas will change your performance/mileage. It's garbage gas and does more harm than good. It drops 5 miles per gallon off the highway estimated MPG on a 5.3 liter, variable displacement (drops cylinders when cruising), motor. Not a good thing for a bigger vehicle.

Karen has a 2006 Chrysler T&C also
with stow and go -- it is great and has 110,000 miles on it with no problems. Four
crates or three with a seat popped up for carrying three people make this almost
as good as our 36 foot long crate (e.g. our Southwind RV). Wish my ML350
(which has >150,000 on it was as cheap to maintain J )

I love mine, too. I just bought a new Element because my last one was getting to the 190,000 mile mark. The BEST car I ever had for my dogs, however was the Ford Aerostar--could fit 7 shorthairs in it, all wheel drive, and they stopped making that also. Still laughing about the guy who ran up to my Aerostar a couple of years ago, asking me how many miles I had on it and when I told him about 140,000 he asked me if I wanted to sell it...He was looking for one with "low mileage". Still have that car and it runs like a top...

I had the Honda Element and put about 140,000 miles on it and it never had any issues. But it was not big enough as I wanted to have a back row of seats so that is when I got the Pathfinder after seeing how well a friend’s Pathfinder held up and she has two Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Her car has over 120,000 miles so far with no issues. So with this one I keep the crates in the back (have the flat aluminum crates that do not rattle) and have my middle row seats up. I need it for work and do not have the luxury of having two cars. Parking another car at our house would be an issue. I was going for the features too . . . the smart key, navigation built in, rear control a/c, etc. But if I had enough room in my driveway, I would probably go with the suburban. Roz. I have a Santa fe which I bought used. It's wider than most other SUV's and I can fit two dogs side by side in intermediate crates in the very back with the back seat still able to seat kids, one with car seat. If I have a baby sitter I can take 4 crates and it remains in the midsize SUV class. Get 23 MPG on highway and 20 up and down the TN mtns daily.
I had a honda FIT for several years and for a small econo car I could pack it. Could fit one one crate in back sideways with both kids and a front passenger. Or 1 kid in front one in rear and a large crate and one medium with some room for a suitcase. Or with all seats down 2 large crates and one intermediate. Mind you that's in a SMALL car that got 32 MPG on junk gas on our mtn roads. Only changed after totaling it on icy roads....

I have a Toyota Sienna mini-van (not an SUV), but it fits two 26 inch crates side by side in the back. You can also take the passenger seats out to add more. Also, I have never had it in the shop except for normal maintenance and it is a dream on the road. Great vehicle.

Thanks!!

Hmmm, very impressive, I had no idea "show girls" were so knowledgeable about the pros and cons of vehicles. Still, I know a number of girl field trialers who drive trucks pulling goose neck horse trailers with living quarters and dog boxes. They do pretty well and are a little more conservative than the macho guys so they don't get in binds as often. Field trialers almost have to have a truck capable of pulling a big horse trailer. Most have at least weekender living quarters and built in dog crates as well. General Motors, Ford and Dodge are pretty much the only choices. High torque diesel engines are the power plant because they are more economical and have better towing characteristics than gasoline engines. I usually change out at 270,000 miles or thereabouts, the truck body goes first, the engine is still performing.
I wonder, did the deer appreciate all the foam or was it past caring? Bob J.

I have a 2007 Kia Sorento...best vehicle I've ever owned. I have had higher end vehicles and really disliked them. My Kia can fit 2 -400 crates side by side in the back and another crate in front of those. It's been a totally dependable vehicle (now has 107K). I was very impressed with it when I t-boned a deer at 60 MPH that came out of a vineyard and jumped in front of me....I barely felt the impact as there is 2-2.5 feet of foam in the front end. I am planning on buying another Sorento in a year or so. I also just heard a report that said Kia sales surpassed Toyota this past year. Kia is manufactured by Hyundai.....................

I have a Ford Explorer and can fit 2- #400 crates in the back with 3rd seat down. Can fit another #400 if I put the 2nd seat down + #200 crate for the Parson. Mine happens to be a V8, which I didn’t want but I bought it used, gas mileage isn’t great but lots of room for dogs and stuff. I wish I had 4 wheel drive for the field but the V8 powers me through the mud when needed. I also love my Sienna! -----Original Message----- From: Beverly Quarles <gsptx@sbcglobal.net> To: gsp-l <gsp-l@shorthairs.net> Sent: Mon, Jul 18, 2011 11:37 pm Subject: RE: [gsp-l] SUV for GSP Recommendation I have a Toyota Sienna mini-van (not an SUV), but it fits two 26 inch crates side by side in the back. I have a Ford Explorer (03) that the midwest side by side SUV crates fit perfectly in. They fit with a couple inches to spare and with the back set up. They are perfectly sized for the GSPs. The new Explorers may be smaller in the cargo area.
A friend has a new Nissan Pathfinder which is a little bigger. The midwest crates fit very well.
Both are great vehicles, drive really well in the snow and are midsized. There is enough room on top of the crates to fit 2 chairs and 2 soft crates and then plenty of room in the 2nd seat section.
I am starting to look for a new vehicle as well and the Pathfinder is looking to be my top choice presently. Nissan also offers really good certified pre-owned vehicle programs.
