I am confused you are saying that "What I do say to people who come to us for a solid liver show prospect is that you MUST have an above average solid liver in order to compete with an average ticked/patched counterpart". If coat color does not matter why make this statement, as a new competitor with a solid liver I cannot stress how many times I have heard it from judges and competitors alike, even at the nationals I was verbally and physically accosted because my dog was solid liver!!!!      John Marinos

Re:  John's Question
Hi John,
Sharon just answered your question and gave you the reasons why.  Try to understand and digest what she was kind enough to share with you.  As a long respected breeder of fine solid livers, Sharon knows what she's talking about.
Best of luck with your dog,

Those that know me know that I have several solid liver dogs. Several years ago I sold a nice solid liver male to a wonderful home for a pet. I asked them to let me evaluate the dog as he matured and if he turned out to let me show him.  They brought him to me one Sunny August afternoon and I talked them into letting me show him.  He finished in 8 shows with two reserves, 6 wins, 4 majors including winners dog at the MDGSP speciality, under Anne Clarke.  Those of you that were there remember Annie stepping back in the ring as she had all of her bitches in for winners bitch.  The 6-9 was ticked.  The 9-12, 12-18, Bred by (mine) and open bitches were all solid liver.  Winners bitch went to the beautiful 12-18 bitch and reserve to the open, if I recall they were littermates and Sharon's breeding??????  When she looked at her winners class Annie laughed and said, hmmm guess I have messed up my breed entry for the next few months. :)
Annie judged DOGS not color.  I have a solid bitch that has several reserves to majors, each time but once when I was handed the reserve ribbon, the judge stated this is a nice solid liver.  I would just smile and say "no, this is a nice Shorthair"
I too have seen exhibitors who say they have lost because of color, when the color was not the problem. :)
If we continue to show nice examples of the breed, it should not matter the color.  Those of you with brown dogs keep trying it can be done.

Susan, I was interested in your story about solid livers in the show venue.  My first GSP as a youngster was a solid liver dog, a washout derby from a field trial string, and every GSP I've owned since has been that color (guess you could say I'm partial to them).  I have three now, and noting your signature line with Brittanies as well, I also have three Britts.  Britts and GSPs make a nice complement in the field, my wife and I hunt them two at a time and have a blast.

Anyway, I liked you comment about, "No, this is a nice Shorthair."  Well done,

Cal
