I can be 16 again :)

That's great Judy, have a great time.  It will be very rewarding for both of you.   There is nothing better then shaping a child's life in a positive manner.

I am happy to mentor any junior interested in field work and/or veterinary technology... I am in the Finger lakes of NYS. Actually BOCES contacted me with a high school senior interested in shadowing. We will be meeting a week from Monday and I am looking forward to working with her.   :)

I agree with David.  Perhaps we could have contacts for agility, obedience, rally, etc. throughout the country.  And if you know any Juniors doing companion events.  Definitely make sure they fill out the AKC certification form.  My daughter has been awarded a very nice scholarship from the AKC for college.

I am interested in doing field work and would love to find a mentor close.  I live in south Louisiana, so this is “Labrador Retriever Country” and I have not located anyone that works with pointing breeds unless I am interested in traveling many hours.

AKC does have a Juniors program for performance/companion events. When I
judge and a Junior comes up with their AKC "Junior Handler Certification"
form (http://www.akc.org/pdfs/CEJRH1.pdf) I do three things: 1) Confirm the
Agility Catalog matches their form's Q, time, and placement, 2) Sign their
sheet, and 3) as I hand them back their copy of the sheet, I shake their
hand and thank them for a great run that was fun to Judge (which is almost
100% of the time the case). I find often parents come un and thank any
judge that encourages and recognizes a junior's hard fought achievements in
a sport like Agility (across all breeds). I consider judging an honor, and
a junior and their dog running in agility (succeed or not) an honor to
judge.

The best way to help a junior in agility is to find a good training program
with an organized training system AND an organized handing system that fits
a GSP and the handler's approach to the sport. Those systems are different
and both are important (for example, I use the Garrett training system and
the Derrett handling system for my recent GSPs, but I'm not saying that is
what a junior should do. MANY handling systems such as the Derrett,
Melekenberg, Simmons-Moake, and many other local variations are avaialbe).
If anyone out there has a Junior that is interested in Agility, send me
their name and location -- if I don't know someone in their area that is an
excellent trainer that understands the particulars of what a GSP needs, I
will find someone that does. And do not blame me when your backyard has 5
jumps, an A-Frame, a set of weave poles, and several tunnels sitting on the
grass after a year or so!

Mentoring Agility remotely doesn't make too much sense, but helping a juinor
find the right match of trainer, handling system, and training system is the
best way to kick off getting into the sport.
