Welcome to

This is very cool. There are a lot of different aspects of therapy – classic nursing home visits which our Obedience Club used to do – we had several shorthairs certified to do those – they were very gratifying. And for a different angle entirely, we even participated in a program held by the Colorado Prison System to help rehabilitate inmates in the Women’s Prison system – you would bring your therapy certified dog down once a week for an inmate in the program to learn how to do obedience training and general training work – I suppose that sounds a little on the weird side, but our old girl Erin in the early 90s participated with my mother-in-law and for a while we got status reports on how several of the inmates were getting back up on their feet – there are many aspects to therapy and our Shorthairs, as a breed, can be amazing in any of this work.

I'm so excited to see the number of listers who are involved in therapy work! Our Mia Pia (Can CH Sunrise N Shannon Fire N Ice JH CGC) has been a certified therapy dog for nearly ten years. I have spent the last 25 years of my career as the Director of an agency serving children and adults who are differently abled......she's been amazing...she's my "on call dog", she's always in the car if I've had to go out at night to an ER and always cuddles up to the staff who've supported someone in a crisis as well.
There's also another level that I had wanted to do, but felt she was too up in years for the stress. There are disaster reponse dog teams who support the emergency folks during disasters, I had thought we'd make a good team and may do it yet, albeit with another four legged partner.
This year, we had one of our 2010 pups go to California, where he is participating in the Freedom Dog Program. The dogs are available to assist returning military personnel who are wounded or dealing with PTSD. We are sooooooooo proud of Landry, check out www.freedomdogs.com
